Al Golden named Notre Dame DC

Mr Golden seems to elicit extreme emotions on this board, was 'projected' as a coaching candidate ('done deal' by some) and program savior, rose thru the ranks of college football coaching fairly quickly, met a huge disappointment at U of M (should be little surprise there), and now is in a grey area of his coaching career. I'd say take a deep breath, have another drink or move towards the prescription options...there have been far worse characters in college coaching that got chances and second chances beyond what their results or what you or I think we know deserve. Just let him coach.

Al Golden is a prime example of being extra careful moving to a job that is in disarray and going through sanctions. Not every program is like PSU and not every coach is like BOB. Turns out the toxic nature of The U was too much for him. He should have stayed at Temple until a less toxic environment and a better fit came open.

I thought he kind of looks like Brian Kelly in the pic. Al's a good coach, Miami was just a bad fit for him.
Will probably recruit the Jersey and Philly area aggressively.

Good recruiter. Haven't seen so much on the coaching front.
Al was a fine defensive coordinator at UVA and BC and he was always a top recruiter. This is the perfect job for him to get back into CFB coaching after polishing his skills in the NFL these past few years. Nice high profile program lots of visibility if he does a good job he will be up for multiple HC positions. Our recruiting just got harder in NJ with Al at ND. I hope he does great. He is one of the good guys!

Not disagreeing on most of what you said. Outrecruited us for a few top level LBs while at UVA. The results with those top recruits lagged a little. Let's hope he doesn't hurt our recent success in VA.

What impresses anyone with Al Golden? Did I miss something...
He seems a geniune $3 bill to me.
I get a kick out of gutless twerps who hate Golden but never want to say why.

Notre Dame was ranked #1 in 1990 and were beaten by PSU because of Golden's outstanding clutch play.

He also earned the Ridge Riley award.

Do some research before mouthing off.

WTF does that have to do with his coaching ability.

He can recruit and he could catch a football ... I once agree.

What kind of idiot are you?

He went 9-4 and 8-4 his last two years at Temple. No easy feat.

They moved from the Big East to the MAC at the beginning of his time there. Let's not compare playing Central Michigan to playing VT and Miami.

There's a ton of B grade talent not scooped up by national schools in PhillyNJ area. Al was able to get some of it. Definitely not the case for a lot of the MAC schools who mostly compete in a single state and a half for talent.

Also, a coach later came Matt Rhule, who did even better than Golden.

I have nothing against Golden. I just don't quite get the love affair some had of him.
His move to Miami was great. Made a ton of money. Millions of dollars per year.

He would have done just fine at Miami but he got thrown into the Lions Den having to deal with fallout from the Nev Shapiro scandal and all the sanctions. Then he had to clean out the ghetto thug crew (which was a good chunk of the roster) which he tried to do but it was a tough task trying to change that criminal culture. Al has alot of respect and it is the perfect time to get back into big time CFB at the most visible program in the country. I wouldn't be surprised if Freeman doesn't work out, Al could get the job.
