Am I the only one who is glad that we have no protected rivalry?

Um, those bad Eastern teams as you called them have been replaced by bad B1G teams. Using your base year 2022, Penn State played those powerhouse B1G programs named Rutgers, Indiana, Maryland, and Northwestern.
I noticed you ignored the playoff teams schedules. You are living in the past. Can’t control the conference schedule. You need to schedule two teams that won’t ask for home and home for money purposes. The last game can then be used for a better program. PSU in 1985-86 played a soft schedule and scheduled ND and Alabama to make them relevant. Same with 86-87. The 78 schedule was even worse. All those teams were potential NC teams with schedules no better than today’s.

Hmmmm. Funny thing how Oregon has managed to play lots of non-conference powerhouse teams in today’s game. In fact, they managed to beat the mighty Buckeyes in Columbus with an average QB.

So, please don’t make excuses by saying things are different today. They are not. More than 90% the teams considered as power programs today were power programs 30 years ago.

Did you even check out Oregon’s schedules before saying that? One good non-con and cupcakes. Eastern Washington, Stonybrook and such other types. The 81 and 82 teams I agree with you that PSU went out and had a brutal schedule. Everything else you said is not on point. I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

The days of teams trying to BYU their way to a title are not possible anymore. Loading up a schedule with weaklings and inferior programs will hurt a team’s chances of making the play-offs.

I disagree that “every program” is loading up on the little sisters of the poor opponents.

Penn State‘s schedule in the early to mid 1980s was 2x more difficult than any B1G schedule they have now. Think about it, at max Penn State plays only 2 teams with a pulse during the regular season. Ohio State and Michigan.

None of the other B1G teams recruit on the level of Penn State and they definitely don’t have the same resources and support (except for Nebraska which has underperformed).
Please tell me a P5 team that was undefeated and didn’t make the CFP playoffs because of their schedule? There have been multiple teams that have “BYU’d” their way into the playoffs. On the other hand, no one has loaded up their schedule and got into the playoffs because of it. They get into the playoffs because of their record, period. And going undefeated or having one loss in the Big 10 will get you into the playoffs whether you think the teams are bad or not.

I don’t really care about having a rival, but I’m not quite sure how Iowa can have three when their real rival isn’t even in the conference.
I think Iowa has a bit of a Napoleon complex. As a state. Or maybe just Ferentz does.

It was weird how salty they were to us...trying to antagonize. Like Maryland in pre-game warmups. Inferiority complex.

That's how you get a lot of rivals. Try to knock off a bunch of teams just a bit ahead of you.
