Penn State has some outstanding underclassmen on offense at the wide receiver and tight end positions. In fact if you look at Penn State's projected spring depth chart there is a distinct possibility, except for 5th year senior Tommy Stevens at QB, all of Penn State's skill position starters on offense could end up being sophomores or redshirt freshmen [Justin Shorter, Daniel George or Jahan Dotson at the Z and X WR positions, K.J. Hamler at slot-WR, Pat Freiermuth at TE and Ricky Slade or Journey Brown at RB] this fall.
Even Stevens isn't guaranteed the starting job at QB coming of his injury and surgery. Rs.So. Sean Clifford is having an outstanding spring practice session.
Hamler and Freiermuth in my opinion will be legitimate All-Big Ten candidates for the 2019 season. Both were named by The Atlantic and ESPN as Freshman All-Americans [AAs].
Hamler broke the Penn State freshman record for all-purpose yards with 1,417 yards, topping the previous record of 1,237 set by Saquon Barkley in 2015 and he was a finalist for the prestigious 'Paul Hornung Award" given annually to college football's Most Versatile Player. He was Penn State's leading receiver last season with 42 receptions for 754 yards with five TD catches.
Freiermuth was also named a Freshman AA by 247sports and USA Today. He was Penn State's second leading receiver with 26 catches for 368 yards [14.2 YPC] with eight [8] TD catches, which was the most by a freshman TE at the FBS college level.
That also placed Freiermuth second in the country behind Texas A&M Sr. TE Jace Sternberger, who had nine [9] TD receptions, for the most TD receptions by a TE at the FBS college level during the 2018 season. Sternberger is projected as a second round draft selection in the 2019 NFL draft.
Hamler and Freiermuth had outstanding freshman seasons at Penn State. Before they graduate I believe Hamler and Freiermuth will gain All-Big Ten recognition and I believe Freiermuth enters the 2019 season as the best TE in the Big Ten and will leave Penn State as an All-American.There are several national college football analysts that believe Freiermuth will enter the 2019 season as one of the top three TEs in the country.
