I dropped my license in the Cleveland airport (fortunately found) but am flying out of Atlanta tomorrow. I do have Veterans Administration photo ID (has purple heart designation which might help get sympathy vote) and my PA carry permit photo ID!

From the interwebs. Not too old link attached.

There are several forms of identification that people can use to pass through the TSA check after losing their primary form of ID:

  • Library card
  • Business card
  • Student ID
  • Mail
  • Passport card
  • Photo of an ID
  • Prescription medication with your name

Can’t imagine you’d have an issue. I assume either/both have some sort of counterfeit prevention features which phony ids wouldn’t have

You're likely just fine now. Aren't they going to require Real IDs soon to fly?

Thanks all!
I just read that you DO NEED an ID so disregard my post about what happened ten years ago (I'll delete it). You may want to call the TSA and let them know the ID you do have and see if that is OK. But a passport will do it, i am sure, if you don't have a DL

Agreed. It's actually a lot easier than I thought, at least according to that article.

I think it's funny to contrast that article with the whole Real ID BS we're going through in PA now. So, I need a new driver's license at double the normal cost, but I can use a piece of junk mail as ID instead?

You can use those IDs, but they will give you a body cavity search if you do.

If it means anything, I'd not only usher you thru, I'd also bump you up to 1st class.

From the TSA web site:

Forgot Your ID?
In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name, current address, and other personal information to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You will be subject to additional screening, to include a patdown and screening of carry-on property.

You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if your identity cannot be confirmed, you chose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.

TSA recommends that you arrive at least two hours in advance of your flight time.

I forgot my wallet once and was able to fly. They call a number and put you on with an agent. There were 3 questions: what road does your home street intersect with? Who do you live with? Do you have pets and if so who is your veterinarian? Then you get the stand still strip search and whatnot. It was the same 3 questions on the way back.

I would not bet on it. It probably depends on the agent. Some are real pricks.
It's going to be federal law. It will not depend on the agent. But it will take them several years to fully implement it because of how confused people will be.

They certainly SHOULDN'T give you any shit with a VA id card, it has your picture on it and they could check with the VA you would think- let us know how it turns out

no passport?
Not with me! We are visiting daughter and returning to PA tomorrow thru Cleveland where I lost the license. As I stated, it was found and will get it then. I will update Thursday as late flight tomorrow! Again, thank you all for the input!
By the way, Atlanta great as metro areas go. Be sure to visit the botanical gardens should you ever be down here!

I once lost my ID between the ticket desk and security at OAK airport. It’s about 100 yds walk....
Frantic and nearly-late, I finally found my Costco card with a pixelated B&W photo of me, with a hat on no less. TSA accepted it.

Just another perk of membership, lol!

RealID is nationwide bub.
An extra $28 bucks is better than potentially losing your Passport and renewing that at a cost of ~$200 plus time.

Uh, I wouldn't count on it... TSA search of triple amputee veteran

Post-Script: apparently, the guy in the video, Brian Kolfage, is in some hot water these days for a GoFundMe page he created to raise money to build a section of wall on the Mexico border. Sounds like it raised millions of dollars and now people are asking "where's the wall?" and he's gone silent. Not sure why you would think it's a good idea to donate money to the building of an approximately 3/4-mile long fence along a 2,000-mile border, but you do you! Anyway, the guy may or may not be a fraudster, but doesn't change the fact that TSA is kind of a fraud itself!!

yikes...shows you how solid that security is.

Yes, I know. My point was that security is seemingly such a big deal that our PA driver's license isn't good enough to meet the standard; yet, based on that list, you can board an airplane with a Bed Bad and Beyond flyer from the mail.

Lot of "experts" on this board....
Here is the TSA link with the requirements, including what to do if you lose your ID.
https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification
It does not list a VA ID, but I think it might work or at least help. Bottom line, get to the airport plenty early. You'll likely be okay, but will have to go through additional screening. If there is someone back home that can send you a picture of a passport or other complaint ID, it would probably be a good idea as well.

No offense to the OP, but for the life of me, I cannot understand why this is the first place people come to ask questions that are easily findable online. Google is your friend.

JMO but the reason I ask here first is I like to hear the "real life" experiences in similar situations.
Then I google.
Besides there was a link in the 2nd response.

You mean the link from a newspaper that isn't accurate?

Look, I get asking on non-official things like how to get rid of a curry smell in a condo. No marketing info online can replace the real world experience of someone who has faced it, but on something like this, there is a clear, published policy and it's clear the OP didn't look there first before soliciting the musings and smart ass replies of Mo, Larry, and Curly here on BWI.

Posting stories from Russia Today? Why are you trying to spread fake news and interfere with the free exchange of ideas here on BWI? Collusion! I demand Yahoo sell itself to Facebook so Zuck can implement policies to prevent people he disagrees with from sharing their ideas. It's too dangerous!

Whatever.
Besides maybe they did both. You don't know.

Does PA charge $28 more to get REAL ID?
MI does not, just standard $18 renewal (valid 4 years)

I believe Moderators here have TSA authority.

Unfortunately, all our Moderators here are in the McAndrew Witness Protection Program.
