Their mascot is a Rabbi?
Sort of: his name is Yosef.

Yosef is mountain talk for "yourself," with the idea being that if you are an Appalachian alumnus, fan or friend and have a heart filled with black and gold, you are Yosef.

In preparing the layout for the 1942 edition of Appalachian's annual yearbook, The Rhododendron, editor James Storie and associate editor Elizabeth South (who later married in June 1942) were talking with freshman Lloyd S. Isaacs and Bill Mitchell of Observer Publishing about being one picture short of a perfectly balanced annual.

The result of their chatter was the creation of a character named Dan'l Boone Yoseff from Appalachian. He was presented as a member of the 1941-42 freshman class.

That highlights video is even better after realizing Chad Henne was the Michigan QB that day, and he was terrible.

I've been told there's a saying at App State's campus for the students to Believe in Yosef.

Hahahahah....I'm speechless. That was so bad it was great.

That music was far out... was that The Cowsills singing that groovy jingle?! It was a gas!

How soon can I enroll?! Gettin' my new bell-bottoms at Korvettes today, man!

Oh dam. That video had been made in the 80s or 90s. No way sombody would consider that a good promotional video these days or any days.

Nooo!!! For years and years, buddies from UF, ND, UMich and I had a running pool on which team would finish the season ranked highest. Was fun but finally died off around the sanction period. We’re starting it up again this season since 3/4 project to be solid and, in a relative rarity for us, UF is playing the sole wild card. Anyway, we really enjoyed mocking that video but by season-end determined it’s cursed. UM inexplicably lost and ruined its season in its opener, then went on to beat PSU, ND and UF.

The video remains hilarious but I cringe when I see it before our opening game... not really. But kinda...

A couple of questions after watching that video:

Is it high on a mountain (like the song states) or in a valley (as the constant panorama shows)?

And, more importantly, is ASU hot, hot, hot? I couldn't tell.

Maybe I shouldn't overlook them anymore. You think PSU has a chance now that I've changed my mind?

And then you remember that a few weeks later we lost in that same stadium to the team that couldn't beat App State.

Watching that gives me a strong urge to never go to Appalachian State. Wow, is that cheesy. I guess times change and at one time that was cool.

I've actually been to App State, and to a football game there too. It's an interesting mountain community but damn, winter comes early. As with lots of other places, it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.

I would not underrate their football team for one second though.
