That was actually a funny read. Hate is a strong emotion. In this case, it likely stems from “We want to be like you but know we’ll never get there so therefore we hate you”.

Snookie,her mom and dad were students of mine. Her parents were born and raised in Marlboro New York. Nicole was adopted. Unlike her folks, I don't believe "Snookie" is of Italian heritage.

I live in NJ and can verify that some of them hate us, most don't. We are the school and program they aspire to be and they know it very well. I've lived here for close to 30 years and never knew of any hate towards us until about 4-5 years ago. A client's daughter had to drop some docs at our office. We started talking and she told me she goes to Rutgers. I figured since we are B1G brothers, even tho i know that's laughable, I'd mention I went to PSU. The first words out of her mouth were "We hate Penn State". I was kind of stunned by that reaction. I said really? I never heard that before. She said they all just hate us. I told her it must be because we've kicked your ass for a century or so. That shut her up.
Other than that incident, I don't hear it, and many of my kid's friends go or went there, so I chat with them.
