and in celebration of such, some pretzel stores in PA are offering free pretzels, while others have discounts on certain pretzels.

looks as though I'm going to have to get a soft pretzel to celebrate the day!

Philly Pretzel Factory? Wawa? Street vendor?

Do they soft have pretzels in Pittsburgh? (The frozen ones don’t count.)

Street vendor -- somehow, I doubt they are participating in any type of promotion, though I am a big fan of buying them from a street vendor.

Wawa -- one of my favorite stores on the planet, but I'm not a big fan of their pretzels. The soft pretzels they separate in advance, which tends to dry them out. Other people crave their speciality pretzels (like, the ones with cream cheese inside the pretzel), but those are in the shape of pretzels sold by Annie's, which I don't care for, plus I don't like anything other than dough inside a soft pretzel.

Philadelphia Pretzel Factory -- they do give away free soft pretzels today, so that might be where I end up today.

Living in Florida I'll settle for the Wawa pretzel. Not great, but not bad...

When we lived in Enola, we would make trips to Lititz to Sturgis Pretzel Bakery and to Wilbur's Chocolate.

Founded in 1861, the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery is the first commercial pretzel bakery in America. Tour the original bakery, get a hands-on lesson in pretzel twisting.

For me to have a soft pretzel in mountains of northeast PA, I'll have to soak my hard "Snyder's" (pretzel that is) in warm water to soak. :(

shopping
And you'd still be eating a better pretzel than most softies here in Philly.

Forget the water. Throw some spicy brown on it and enjoy the best pretzel in regional circulation.

I like my pretzels from a street vendor at the intersection of the Vine Street Expressway off ramp and 8th street. A good, honest working man's pretzel, with some toughness and grit. And I mean real grit, kicked up from passing tractor trailers. No frou frou chi chi pretzels from the gilded suburbs for me.

Think the Amish Market in Annapolis MD is giving their pretzels away? Those are high quality.

Yeah. Been there. True grit...and gravel...and the occasional cigarette butt. Would do it again. All about keeping it real.

I’m with Tom on the wawa pretzels, but the only one I won’t ever buy is one from the guy in front of the Franklin institute. And I hope none of you guys buy one either. Priced for tourists—rich ones who apparently wouldn’t know a pretzel from a turd. That guy should wear a mask while robbing people.

Hugely jealous of you guys back in the Homeland.

The average Wawa soft pretzel is still better than any soft pretzel I’ve had in Texas since I moved here 13 years ago.

I went back home 2 years ago and attended a Flyers game in my sister in law’s corporate box. Not only did they have amazing cheese steaks - they tasted like the ones we got on Cheese Steak Day at Wallingford Elementary - but the soft pretzel (from Federal) were insane. I should have hidden about 15 under my Dave Poulin sweater.

A great Pretzel store would make a killing down here

Thanks jd, I have a few Snyder's just about every evening but never considered topping w/spicy brown.
DO IT!

So sorry we didn’t do this in college... We’d have eaten them with grey poupon country style—classy huh?!?

Mom wasn’t always a great cook, but she consistently nailed that one!

When I worked in Centre City Philly I used to get Pretzels and Hot dogs from the Vendor at 15th and Walnut. Best Pretzels and non grilled Hot dogs I've had. There was also a place called Pagano's that would serve the best freshly made Hamburgers every Thursday. They were Awesome.

As a kid back in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, I would go into town (Columbia, Lancaster County) on a Friday night and there would be kids selling freshly baked soft pretzels from the market. They were in wicker baskets with white cotton napkins. The best soft pretzels I ever had. I think they were a dime.

I remember a walk up window on 13th St north of Market. I think it was a bakery that just made pretzels. It was a good stop walking back to my office after going to Pearl’s Oyster Bar at the Reading Terminal Market for lunch.

Philly Pretzel Factory vs. The Pretzel Shop

Go!

PPF pretzels are not comparable to the Pretzel Shop. PPF is a chain. There are some PPF stores in PGH. I tried them a couple of times about 10 years ago when I lived in PGH, and thought they were average. I'll bet that there are some small family run businesses in Philly which make awesome pretzels. The pretzels from PPF, Auntie Annes's, WaWa, Sheetz, etc.are okay. I prefer the Pretzel Shop. When I worked in PGH, I would stop and get 4-5 dozen pretzels from the Pretzel Shop around 6 AM before the store front even opened, from the kitchen entrance in the back. They would literally come right out of the oven and into a bag.

Have you ever tried the soft pretzels at the Fredericksburg Brewing Company? I've had lunch there a few times but never made it beyond the sausage platter and a couple brews.
