Before beating ND, Northern Illinois wasn't even among those receiving votes in either the AP or coaches poll. After winning, the catapulted into the top 25, and went up to 23 this week. Looking at the computer rankings, they are 87 on Sagarin and 57 on Massey, which are two of the most prominent computer rankings. It really doesn't make sense, unless they are just trying to prop up ND. Thoughts?

Are the AP and Coaches polls Subjective?

You are certainly entitled to your opinion as are the people who are asked to participate in the composition of the polls.

At this stage of the season, the polls are little more than material to analyze and debate for the college football junkies.

They are largely meaningless at this point. Most of the elite teams have not played anyone yet, so it is mostly conjecture. Every major team has a game that will tell who they are. Most have not played it yet.

Ga Tech was ranked for beating FSU
BC was also ranked for beating FSU
Memphis got way more votes for beating the same 0-3 FSU
I hate ND but it has nothing to do with ND
When you beat a brand you get respect from voters who don't follow things as closely as they should

Two games coming up that will be interesting.

This week BGSU plays Texas A&M
Next week NIL plays NC State

Not a sham, but worthless at this point.

Too much group think in polling. Very few research their selections and instead rely on others who voted in the polls. It becomes a big feedback loop.
