if a student-athlete is looking to transfer, how does the recruiting take place?
My son asked if college coaches are permitted to make contact once the intention of transferring is made.
I'm guessing, no.
My guess is the student-athlete must initiate the contact with possible new schools, and the coach then can go talk with him/her.
There is no way a coach like Harbaugh can reach out Patterson, without Patterson first contacting Harbaugh, and say "hey, I need a Q now, let's talk". Correct?
TIA for any additional information.

Yes and no. Rule is that schools other than that in which the student is currently enrolled cannot make contact with the student unless they receive permission from the current school. As a practical matter, how would they know this unless the student, who has the waiver letter, contacts them first? Occasionally, this information becomes public, but seldom before contacts have already been made.

Usually, a school will go through back channels if it is interested in a kid who is a transfer candidate. A lot of times, that back channel is the athlete’s coach from high school.

Mea Culpa. No offense need be taken, Fair. When I am working my part-time job at a meat store, I call all my age or older, Young Man or Young Lady. The 70-80 year olds love it. I'm 56, btw.

Ah, I wasn't upset. Just kidden' ya. You're one of the good guys here.:)
