StateCollege.com: Group Ticket Sales Are Set And Available for BJC Duals

Penn Live: Penn State wrestler Jason Nolf has one point to make during a match -- and that's make points

Daily Nebraskan: 5 tough matchups coming up for Husker wrestling team

Tallahassee Democrat: Beyer, Leon wrestling thirst for more success
(appears that Gabe Beyer has decommitted -- I wasn't aware of that until this article)

Black Shoe Diaries: Wrestling No. 1 Penn State Hosts 2015 Nittany Lion Open
(their look at each weight class; also, bscaff is a little slow to learn about dclark)

So from the Tallahassee Democrat article:

"Beyer is now looking at Arizona State and Iowa, two other wrestling powerhouses. Not bad for a backup plan."

Let's look at those schools, from a $$ standpoint and a wrestling roster standpoint.

ASU
starter: Tanner Hall - true freshman
backups: Chance Eskam (true fresh), Austyn Harris (RS fresh), Kirk Wilson (true fresh)
out-of-state tuition & fees: $25,458

Iowa
starter: Sam Stoll - RS freshman
backups: don't think they have 1 on roster, but Aaron Bradley just returned from a Morman Mission, and will be joining the squad in the fall of 2016, so he's the equivalent of a HS senior; he'll just be 3 years older than most incoming fresh in Sep.
out-of-state tuition & fees: $27,890

By comparision:

PSU starter: Jan Johnson on loan from FB team; Nick Nevills in reality as a RS fresh
backups: none
out-of-state tuition & fees: $30,452

going strictly from a roster perspective, PSU seems far less crowded than ASU and would be 1 wrestler less crowded than Iowa.
going strictly from a financial perspective (which is the reason listed in the article for the decommittment), PSU is slightly more expensive. Then again, I'm surprised he was even getting 20% from PSU, and I doubt that ASU has any $$ available for him, and it's hard to imagine that Iowa would have anything more (if they even have 20%), so the difference in costs is rather small.

Perhaps there's more going on than what is stated in the article.

This could be nothing more than a young man who jumped on a great opportunity.....only to learn he actually has options once he comes out from under the radar. Plenty of time to sort all this out. Thanks for the financial analysis......surprised he was getting 20%. Maybe the 20% is no longer on the table.

Hey Tom does that additional $4,000 Plus that the football players get, also apply to wrestling? If so, how do they carve that up? Thanks!

Tim...might you know the answer? @Tim Owen/BWI staff

Good questions. Alas, I'm not around the team, plus, I've never been comfortable discussing other people's finances with them.

I thought the payments were to all varsity athletes, mostly to cover expenses, but I've never looked to see if non-scholarship players got the fees, or how the payments were handled for athletes that were on partial scholarships.

Tim might have more insights on this. If he does, I hope he adds to the discussion.

If he was getting 20%, it may have been 20% for the first year, after that you get what you earn. (Though I'm not sure if B10 multi-year scholarships are in play.) If so, he probably figured there wouldn't be much left after the various Nevills Family heavies get theirs.

He might have calculated that Zeke would have more money in the out years, with Sasquatch not shirting. That's not a bad calculation.

The 20% might also be his total financial aid package -- a partial with needs-based aid.

Decommitted doesn't necessarily mean gone, but I wouldn't hold my breath on him coming. AJ Nevills, on the other hand ... he's had one free non-football weekend, and used it to fly across the country to visit PSU.

If he's looking for more money, he might want to consider non-powerhouse programs. He doesn't have the high school credentials to warrant a huge scholarship from the 3 schools listed. Giving him 20% is even a calculated risk

Hey, sorry guys, just catching up with this. I had heard that this was a possibility a little while ago, but wasn't sure, and yea, I was surprised to hear he even was getting 20. That's actually quite a bit from what I'm aware of for someone of his caliber. For the stipend @lionlover I honestly have no idea. I know all the athletes get something, but I'm not sure if it's equal or equitable or what. I can ask around, but like Tom says, getting specifics on finances in this sport is pretty difficult and I don't like prying too much, but I can check.
