At what point where you pretty much resigned to defeat? *

Anyone on the staff with eyesight and a functioning brain. His decision may have worked out (that time), but it was still the wrong decision under the circumstances.
Wrong. He is in there because he is the best return guy we have. He obviously saw a seam develop(he was hardly touched until he passed the 50) and saved our asses with the big return. So, let's ream his ass for doing what he is in there to do. Maybe, he should be benched as well.
Momentum was 100% with App State....until Hamler happened.

I was just about there before the AppSt. back scored. But after he scored, 1:28 left with timeouts and McSorley, there's hope.

Nobody ever does it but it would have been smart for the App State runner to go down at the 5 yd line and let the clock run down.

IIRC PSU lost a game like that @ NW a couple of years ago. We scored too early and allowed NW time to come back and win.

If the App State running back didn't run that ball into the end zone, I think they could have run out the clock and kicked a field goal. I was very relieved when he scored. The couple of minutes before that I thought we were sunk.

We were saved by this against Iowa last year too. Coaches are going to have to start telling their RBs to take a knee at the one if there’s more than a minute left. McSorley will make you pay for that.

Actually an App St player had a clear shot at him at the 10 yd line and whiffed. It worked out.....L U C K I L Y!

I wouldn't say it was luck. Hamler had one guy to beat to get to the next level. I'll take those odds everytime. The blocking was excellent on that return and it would have been a crime if he would have taken a knee in the end zone. He just hesitated a bit because he was five yards deep when he fielded it.

To say he needs "reamed out" is ridiculous (I know you didn't say that).

I was listening to on-line radio from a hotel in Bucharest, Romania (kickoff 10:30 p.m. local time). I temporarily lost the feed when App State was driving at the end of the game. I thought then that they would kick a field goal to win. I was surprised when I got the feed back and the game was going into overtime.
I had to leave at 3 a.m. to get to the airport for a 6 o'clock flight, so I ended up pulling an all-nighter. It was worth it.

I get your point, which others have made, but it seems to me that the onus has always been put on the runner to make that decision. It would have been a simple matter for the coach to call an inside handoff and tell the runner to go down easily. Put it on the head coach.

Eagles player did that once, I think vs Dallas. Won the game, too.

Let's hope we don't have to go through that again. Twice is enough for me.

When they recovered the onside kick and I realized the bottle of bourbon was gone. I never stress drank like that for a psu game. I was the one defeated when I woke up feeling like death.
Yeah, I didn’t start drinking at the beginning of the game, but I made up for it by the end. Cracked into the bourbon.

I was never resigned to defeat, but I was pretty worried between the time PSU had to punt from their own 6 until OT. Especially when ASU got 8 yards on 1st down to put them at the 16 and Penn State was forced to burn a timeout.
Once they got to OT I was confident they would win.

Right before App state scored their last td. I figured they’d run out the clock.
My wife gave me hope with her super powers of stating the obvious. They have like a minute and a half and that QB is good, right ? And they get at least four tries, right ?

My wife is about undefeated with her the “ game isn’t over yet don’t be negative “ stuff.
“ Honey, they’re at the one!!!”, Michigan 2013 after Robinson’s grab.

I thought App was going to score their last TD right around the end of regulation and PSU would not have time to respond.
I was glad that App State got a TD as early as they did. It allowed PSU about 1:50 to come back and score the tying TD. Had App State run the clock down and kicked a measly field goal, I think the Lions would likely have lost.

That klck return was MONEY, but my heart was in my throat when he hesitated in the end zone.

This is how I felt in all honesty - flashbacks to Iowa kept me positive. I think the first time I really thought we might lose was on our final drive when it was 4th and 2 with 1:06 left before McSorley hit Polk on a route similar to the one he missed him on the previous play....clutch catch like Hamilton was in our final drive against Iowa.

Wasn’t it Blacknall that had the 4th Down completion during the drive at Iowa?

I remember that, I think it was a primetime game. Brian Westbrook maybe?

Correct, against Dallas, in 2007. Westbrook broke through the line, and had no defenders between him and the end zone. The Birds held a 10-6 lead, with just over 2 minutes left in the game. As the Cowboys were out of TOs at that point in the game, by not scoring on the play, the Birds were able to run out the clock, and thus never gave the ball back to Dallas.

We also scored our TD in something like a minute. We gave them the ball with :47 left IIRC. So not only would the back have had to slide down (stopping the clock after the 1st down), PSU had, what, 2 or 3 timeouts left. Not only is it possible they only attempt a FG, they could have missed. 100 out of 100 HC's in the nation would tell that kid to take the TD as soon as possible.
