Ayron Monroe to transfer

It doesn’t appear 85 is going to be the issue. We probably have room for 30
I don't think the majority are graduating in 3 years. Doesn't switching schools after 2 or 3 years makes it more difficult to get a diploma from the new school? IMO the relaxed transfer rules make football more important than an education. Not good IMO.
Several are four year guy plus I doubt they are leaving to sit out a year and I doubt they are counting on a waiver like Fields. That tells me they have graduated.

Well JJ, Monroe, McPhearson, and Polk have already said they graduated and the others haven’t said anything

Maybe. You think Franklin is bringing in twelve more elite prospects?

Wish him well but I don't see him as a given starter at a lot of programs. He'd likely get similar PT at PSU as a backup and on special teams. He can't reasonably think he'd develop into even a potential NFL free agent. I just don't get this one at all.

Probably tired of getting ripped on here??

Huh? He's transferring because he's tired of getting ripped on this message board? Is that what you're saying?

Read these kids tweets dude. All of them are bitching about how fake our fans are. I think one of them was on this board. Wake the Eff up.

I can’t imagine doing all that work and never starting. At any sport. God bless the kids that do but I couldn’t do it. Must be brutal to just watch. Can YOU imagine what it’s like?

They can add more than 25 this year if they want to.

what is the max per year for the BIG (excluding UM)? last i looked it was like 27 or 28 per year max. so you can over sign to some level.

to date JF has never over signed, so the staff would have to operate a little different. I am sure they can adapt - but not clear they are ready to do it this year. so if they decided to go for say 9 more recruits could them maintain typical PSU quality - or at least be better than the people leaving? maybe but that is not easy.

This will be the toughest year for it. Its new and we have some mediocre players who are kind of buried to low 2nd/3rd string. And anyone that transfers in to possibly replace these guys will have to sit one year too. Not that I expect many to transfer in and basically fill the same role.

The most important thing someone else alluded to is the benefit of freshman being able to play 4 games without redshirting. Extremely helpful for special teams and/or depth. Most of the players we are getting the last two years have zero intentions of redshirting anyway. You can't recruit elite prospects and even bring up redshirting these days. For example, Noah Cain said he will be here 3 years and go to the NFL. So you either get them for 2 years plus 4 games if they redshirt or a full 3 years.

Lastly, I think this helps get better players on the field. How many times last year did some complain (including myself) about the blind loyalty JF showed to upper classmen? Koa Farmer, Deandre Tompkins, Polk while guys like Parsons, Luketa, George, Dotson (early in year) and Shorter (later in year due to injury) could have played more snaps. This will force the hand to play the more talented player regardless of age.

Mostly agree, but any grad transfer that CJF may bring in soon, or after Spring practice into the Summer, will not have to sit out and would have 1 or 2 years to play depending on how fast they graduated from the place they came from. That's the whole thing with grad transfers - they do not have to sit out - they are eligible immediately.

I believe we will see CJF bring in a couple players that want a PSU masters degree combined with the chance to play at PSU, including a nice bowl game that they would not have gone to where they were. I doubt any players brought in will end up with a key role, as CJF seems to still have lots of talent competing for spots on the 2 deep, especially when the 2019 class of top players is added in this Spring and Summer....

If he is, a lot of them will be off the transfer wires.

Not sure this portal is good for the sport.

I do agree that a kid with a degree in hand should not have to sit a year.

I undestand the rule of grad transfers, I was referring to other transfers like so many we have leaving to cover their spots. Grad transfers will be very few and far between and probably not that helpful. The player pool is small of very good players who are smart enough to get a masters from PSU. Can only remember the one O lineman from Stanford who never played a few years ago. Seems like a wasteland. Not to mention most grad transfer type players just go pro if they are any good.

Has Franklin publicly tweeted, commented at all regarding this new process and his thoughts on impact of team and football in general? I think it would put many of us at ease if we could hear from the top. Especially if it is in an interview where you can read facial and body language. If there is anything out there please post the links. I haven't heard of anything from him or any coach. I imagine many are trying to wrap their heads around it. Some including Franklin may not have anticipated so many taking advantage of the new process.

No and he wont. He'll tweet about birthdays and Idaho, Idaho, Idaho until August.

I would be shocked if he doesn't express some very lengthy and meaty thoughts vav the changes in the transfer process - - - - - probably at his first (next) PC. He surely is going to be asked about it.
Would that be at the start of Spring Practice? IDK.

In the meantime, there really isn't much to say - and I expect they are kinda' busy right now, trying to recruit some kids to replenish the roster :)
He typically has one after signing day. Even though he had one after the early signing day I would expect him to have another given the numbers PSU will be signing and the transfers

I agree that with the talent CJF has been bringing in it will be hard for most grad transfers, those that left other schools because they can't get the playing time they would like, to expect to come to PSU and be win playing time. So GT's for PSU will mostly be leaving and not adding to the PSU roster. So what the new rule is really going to do is allow PSU to recruit larger classes to fill in for not only the normal graduation and those leaving early for the NFL, but also for those that GT. Unfortunately, the new rules include the early signing period which is earlier in the recruiting cycle than when most GT's announce, which will make roster management and recruiting to fill GT's much more difficult. Without the early signing period CJF would have pretty easily gone out and raided lesser programs commits to fill the scholarships of those that GT before the Feb. signing period. Even counting a few against the previous year if that year didn't have 25. A whole new ball game.

Players will not be motivated to let their coach know they are leaving before the bowl games, for fear that the coaches would hold that against them in preparation for the game and in the game. So the timing of the process now is not very good for the coaches. It was pretty obvious to me that CJF was not aware that so many would leave as he would have signed a larger class in December than he did if he would have known.....

What happened to this generation? It’s like they shy away from competition, so they can play where there is no competition. Terrible way to live your life, it’s a dog eat dog world

You are talking about Div. 1 scholarship athletes? Really I don't think the fine people on this board have anything to teach them about competition. The competition and hard work they have gone through to reach this level is beyond anything we can even imagine.

Plus, this is kids who, for the most part, are earning a Penn State degree in three years while competing in a Division 1 sport for a national Top 25 team.

How many of the people on this list earned their Penn State degree in three years while not competing in any sport?

I think we ought to be saluting the Ayron Monroes and thanking them for their contributions. They're transferring out because they want to play -- and in some cases I'm certain they are being encouraged to transfer out. Pot shots from people on this board are just not warranted IMHO.

I agree, he will be asked about it as his next presser. Definitely wont address it on Twitter, as it is not the place for it.

There is no question that these early departures and transfers are going to hurt the team in 2019. As some of are saying, we now need a number of freshmen on the depth chart and injuries will happen. Upperclassmen play better than underclassmen. Depressing.
Solution is that we have to find better ways to spend our time in the Fall. CFB has become a joke. Add to this that we may have more transferring out than anyone (don't know), which may be indicative of underlying problems.

Smart enough has nothing (very, very little anyway) to do with it.

In what field are they going to "earn a masters" in one semester (while playing football)? At Penn State - or anywhere else (go ahead, GOOGLE it, the NCAA even complied the info - it is out there)

I've even seen folks talk about players earning a PSU MBA :) (even though you can't be IN the MBA program while doing "football"... let alone for multiple years)

Wouldnt they have to be smart enough to get ACCEPTED into PSU grad school in the first place though? And how many kids who play football would that would be of any real help to PSU?

Aside from “because”, what reasonable difference is there as to differentiating between the kid who “has a degree” vs the one who doesn’t?

If a kid realizes he made a mistake sooner .... wouldn’t it make even MORE sense for him to improve his situation ASAP?

If you're suggesting that every transfer has to sit a year, I can live with that. However, if a kid is sitting with a degree in hand and still has athletic eligibility left, you can hardly say that he has made a mistake.

Remember when the Illinois coaches were all over campus when the sanctions were laid down? Do you want there to be open season on every kid on every roster every year? I don't think that's good for the sport and I don't think it will be good for the kids in the long run.

Some may feel differently, but if it was my kid, after considering his options - who felt that he would be better served in a different situation (in any situation, and for whatever reason(s)…. personal, professional, academic, athletic, whatever) - I would want him to act ASAP once he reached that decision. And I would most certainly counsel as such.
I surely wouldn't want him to reach a decision that he would be better served to adopt a different course... and then to NOT act upon it and not get on with his life in full vigor (no matter what decision he is facing).

Wouldn't you?

Now that you put it that way probably not

What does any of that have to do with whether a kid who has completed 1, 2, 3, 4 or whatever years of college should be more or less free to make a change than any other kid - who may have completed more or fewer years?

I thought that was the topic.

That was the only point I was raising.

The schools are restricted in the number of scholarship players they can have and the number they can sign in a given year. When a kid makes a decision to accept one of those valuable and limited scholarships, that's a commitment. Honoring your commitments is a life lesson worth learning. Sitting out for a year is a deterrent to transferring at the drop of a hat and a consequence of the commitment he's considering breaking.

Kids can still transfer whenever they want. They just can't be on a football scholarship. That's fair.

Do you want coaches poaching the rosters of other schools every year? I don't.

If they've earned their degree, they've honored their commitment. Pretty simple.

Your post is solely from a fan's perspective and it is how most fan selfishly looks at this issue. However, these scholarships are year to year for the Universities and the players can be dropped from scholarship at any time unless the conference makes the schools honor a 4 year scholarship. The player's obligation is the same as the schools, a year of play for a year of scholarship.

If you look at it solely from the player's perspective, IMO it is really not fair that they
cannot transfer free of consequence at some point in their career. Almost all of these players believe they are good enough to play professional football and they want the opportunity to show what they can do. While most of these players in the portal probably will not receive a paycheck in the NFL, they should be given an opportunity to transfer if they feel they have better opportunities elsewhere.

As an example, imagine if Saquon had stayed in 2018 instead of declaring for the draft. Sanders, who will be earning an NFL paycheck next year, would not have had an opportunity to show what he could do and would have had to wait another year in college in the absence of being allowed to transfer without having to sit out a year. That circumstance would have been extremely unfair and costly to Sanders.

If not for the fans, there wouldn't be 100,000 + in the stands on Saturdays. He wouldn't be on TV every week. And there wouldn't be an NFL to pay him a lifetime of income in a few short years.

Not unfair at all. He would have been a second stringer in 2018. However, he could have still declared for the draft.
