B1G Championship, Day 1 Thread ... post comments here as responses ***

157: Luke Frey vs. Anthony Perrotti (Rutgers) ...

R1:
Perrotti with a TD, 0-2. Blood time stoppage. Frey with a reversal with 43 sec left, 2-2. Nothing more as Frey rides out to end the period.

Per 2:
1 min, and Frey is still riding. Damn, Perrotti with the Rev near the 1:30 mark, 2-4. Perrotti rides out the period.

Per 3:
Frey starts down. He hits a reversal about 30 sec in, 4-4. If he could ride out he could get a RT point. Frey's RT goes over 1 min, but Perrotti gets a late esc, so it's 5-5 heading to SV

SV:
Perrotti in late in the period, but Frey prevents the TD, so we go to TB. Wait, Rutgers requests a video review. After review, the no TD call stands.

TB1:
Perroitti down 1st. Frey in control, then Perrotti works for a Rev, but Frey with the rideout

TB2:
Frey starts down. Frey with the Rev, 7-5. And that's how it ends. Nice job, Luke Frey, in his 1st B1G Tournament match.

165: Hammond vs. Nick Visicaro (Rutgers) ...

Per 1:
Hammond with the TD, 2-0. Hammond with the rideout, and 2:07 of RT

Per 2:
Hammond starts down. He hits a reversal within 10 sec, 4-0. Hammond riding like crazy.

Per 3:
Visicaro with the Rev, 4-2, and then Hammond with the esc, 5-2. RT is clinched for Hammond. Garett in on a single, and gets the tD, 7-2, with 1:25 left. Hammond still riding with 1 min left. Hammond ends up with 4:53 of RT, and wins 8-2 to move to the quarters.

184: McCutcheon vs. John Rizqallah (MSU)

Per 1:
Not much action in 1st period. Cutch in on a low single late in the period. They scramble, and nothing. Period ends scoreless

Per 2:
Rizqallah starts down. He's out after about 20 sec, 0-1. Rizq gets a stall warning. That's how it ends.

Per 3:
Cutch starts down. He's out quickly, 1-1. McCutcheon in on a leg, gets the TD, and then gets swipes -- 3 NF, 6-1. That's how it ends!

I've stated this before several times but we can't state this often enough: Thank you so very much for all your hard work and dedication on these boards!

Missed Gulibon's earlier match due to PIAAs ...

Gulibon was up 4-1 after the 1st.

Gulibon was up 7-1 (I think) after the 2nd, with RT of nearly 2 min.

Gulibon won 12-3 over Alonzo Shepherd (Indy)

285: Lawson vs. Chris Nash (MSU) ...

LawDog is the 5 seed, and Nash is the 12 seed.

Per 1:
LawDog with the TD, 2-0. He turns Nash, is getting swipes, and working for the pin. Doesn't get the pin, but gets another 3 NF, so after 1st it's 8-0 with 2:15 of RT

Per 2:
Lawson takes top. He's putting on a ride, and has RT over 3:00. LawDog with the pin at 4:36!!!!!!!!

He'll face Telford (Iowa) in the quarters.

125 Quarters: Conaway vs. Tim Lambert (Neb) ...

Conaway is the 5 seed, and Lambert is the 4 seed.

Per 1:
JC with the late TD, 2-0, and that's how it ends.

Per 2:
JC takes down to start. He gets the esc about 30 sec in, 3-0. JC with a duck under in the final 30 sec for a TD, 5-0. JC with a rideout on the period. No wait, kNU is challenging the TD, so we'll go to video. TD stands!

Per 3:
Lambert with the esc, 5-1. And then Conaway with the TD, 7-1, with 1:20 to go. JC's RT was 0:26 after the esc. Lambert with another esc, 7-2. JC has 50 sec of RT. Lambert with a late TD, but it's too late, as JC wins 7-4.

133 Quarters: Gulibon vs. Zane Richards (Illini) ...

Gulibon is the 3 seed and Richards is the 6th seed.

Per 1:
Scoreless halfway thru the 1st. Final 30, still scoreless. And that's how it ends.

Per 2:
Richards takes bottom. He's out quickly, 0-1. Virtually no RT there for Jimmy. He'll need to win it on his feet. No more points in the 2nd.

Per 3:
Jimmy takes bottom. He's out in 2 seconds, so RT is not a factor for either guy, 1-1. 1 minute in, still 1-1. Jimmy in on a single late in the period, and gets the TD with 8 seconds left, 3-1. And that's how it ends!

Jimmy is on to the semis, tonight

149 Quarters: Beitz vs. Hunter Stieber (Ohio State) ...

Tough situation for Beitz. He's the 6 seed, and Hunter is the 3 seed. I never can figure out how the seeding is done for guys that were injured most of the year.

Per 1:
Stieber gets a TD with about 40 sec left, 0-2. Beitz with the esc, 1-2, and that's how it ends.

Per 2:
Stieber takes bottom. He gets a quick esc, 1-3. 1 minute into period. And that's how it ends.

Per 3:
Beitz takes down. He's out quickly, 2-3. Beitz with the TD with 40 sec left, 4-3. RT not a factor for either guy. Oh no -- Stieber with the reversal with 4 sec. left, and wins 4-5. So close for Zack.

157 Quarters: Frey vs. Isaiah Martinez (Illini)...

I believe IMar is the 1 seed.

Per 1:
Frey with quick TD, 2-0. IMar with the reversal, 2-2. Frey with the esc, 3-2. IMar with the TD, 3-4. Frey with the esc, 4-4. IMar with the TD, 4-6. Frey with the esc, 5-6. IMar with the TD, 5-8. Crazy action!

Per 2:
Frey takes bottom. Out quickly with an esc, 6-8. IMar with the TD, 6-10. He's getting swipes, and gets 3 NF, 6-13. Frey with the esc, 7-13. IMar with the TD, 7-15. Frey with the esc, 8-15. IMar with the TD, 8-17. This is crazy.

Per 3:
IMar takes bottom. He hits a rev, 8-19. Frey with the esc, 9-19. IMar with the TD, 9-21. IMar is getting swipes, and gets the 3 NF, 9-24. That's a TF at the 6:30 mark.

Tough draw for Luke.

165 Quarters: Hammond vs. Taylor Walsh (Indy) ...

Hammond is the 6 seed, and Walsh is the 3 seed. Both are somewhat unpredictable, so this could be an interesting match.

Per 1:
Hold crap, Walsh with the pin at the 0:38 mark. Walsh is a pinning machine, though he struggles against elite guys. I didn't even see how he caught Hammond -- was checking another link at the time.

Tim Owen, who's at the B1Gs, said that Hammond and Walsh were in a scramble, and Walsh was awarded a pretty questionable defensive pin.

174 Quarters: Brown vs. Nathan Jackson (Indy) ...

Brown is the 2 seed and Jackson is the 10 seed.

Looks as though Cutch's match might take place during Brown's match. Ugh.

Per 1:
Brown with the TD, 2-0. Jackson with an esc, 2-1. Then Jackson with the TD, 2-3. Brown with an esc, 3-3. Then Brown nails a TD, 5-3. That's how it ends.

Per 2:
Jackson takes bottom. He gets the esc, 5-4. Brown with the TD, 7-4. Jacskon hit with a stalling warning. Then he gets the esc, 7-5. Brown with the TD, 9-5. Jackson with the esc, 9-6. Then Brown with another TD, 11-6. Stoppage for blood time.

Per 3:
Brown takes bottom. He gets the esc, 12-6. He then nails another TD, 14-6. Jackson with the esc, 14-7. With 3:31 of RT for Brown, it ends 15-7.

184 Quarters: McCutcheon vs. Sam Brooks (Iowa) ...

lousy matchup for Cutch. He's the 8 seed, and Brooks is the 1 seed.

Per 1:

184 Quarters: McCutcheon vs. Sam Brooks (Iowa) ...

lousy matchup for Cutch. He's the 8 seed, and Brooks is the 1 seed.

Per 1:
Brooks with a TD, 0-2. 2 min left in the 1st. Cutch with the esc, 1-2. 1 min left. That's how it ends. Cutch was hit with a stalling warning in the period.

Per 2:
Cutch chooses bottom. He's out around the 30 sec mark, 2-2. And that's how it ends. Brooks has 1:43 of RT.

Per 3:
Brooks takes down. Brooks with the esc, 2-3. 30 sec left -- Cutch needs a TD to force OT. Wow, he does just that. He gets a very late TD, 4-3. With RT, it's 4-4, and we're going to SV

SV:
Holy crap, Cutch with the TD, and the win, 6-4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was big!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

197 Quarters: McIntosh vs. Nick McDiarmid (MSU) ...

Mac is the 2 seed, going against the 10 seed.

Per 1
McIntosh with a TD to the back, and is getting swipes. He gets 3 NF, 5-0. That's how the period ends.

Per 2
McDiarmid takes bottom. He gets the esc, 5-1. McIntosh has over 1 min of RT. 1 min left. McIntosh with the TD, 7-1. And he's getting swipes, and ends up with 3 NF, 10-1. Period ends. RT at 2:05 for McIntosh

Per 3:
McIntosh takes top. McDiarmid gets the esc, 10-2. McIntosh with the TD, 12-2. McDiarmid with the esc, 12-3. With RT, it ends 13-3 for McIntosh

Re: How's that for lousy...huge win for Cutch!!!

Big win for McCutcheon. He took 2 shots and scored on both. Talk about good shot selection. The Hammond match was definitely an interesting call. He may have been flat on his shoulders for one second but it was in a scramble position that you NEVER see the ref make that call. PSU is wrestling well today. Really would have liked to see Beitz take out Steiber.

285 Quarters: Lawson vs. Bobby Telford (Iowa) ...

LawDog the 5 seed and Telford the 4 seed.

Per 1:
Scoreless 1st period. Lawdog hit with a stall warning during the period.

Per 2:
Telford takes down. He gets a quick esc, 0-1. LawDog fought off a shot by Telford that ended up OOB. Period ends.

Per 3:
LawDog takes down. Telford putting on a good ride. LawDog with the esc, but RT at 1:12 for Telford. 1-1, not including RT. With RT it ends 1-2, Telford. LawDog just can't seem to get his offense going against Telford.

One of the great features with the Big Ten feed is you can rewind....

It was a ridiculous call IMO. Hammond was scrambling through and I didn't see any control. Walsh even appeared to be confused by the pin call, which was SUPER QUICK(!!!). Frustrating.

I was thinking this bout would be one we could win. Tough loss

but Beitz is wrestling well.

Re: I was thinking this bout would be one we could win. Tough loss

Zack is so close.

He has the skills to hang with the best wrestlers at 149. All he needs to do is add some muscle this off season and could be a contender next year.

From my seat - it honestly looked as though the ref positioned himself to be ready to make the call. I think he anticipated the roll on the scramble. It was incredibly quick.
Same mat as a few other questionabl calls today.

In the Delgado match, their were multiple instances where it appeared either one of the wrestlers could have been called for a neutral or defensive fall and they never called it.

He hit Hammond quick!

Cael looked shocked; never even moved from his seat.

Zach was so close - give up the escape and go to OT. I think Hunter was gassing a bit. Great effort though.

Iowa guys are actually racking up some early bonus points...they had a good first session other than Brooks. IMHO - Cutch deserved it. Brooks scored early, then did nothing but hand fight and push away. Our guy finally took a shot with confidence and it paid off. Then did it again in OT.

Re: 165 Quarters: Hammond vs. Taylor Walsh (Indy) ...

That was a HORRIBLE call. No control by Walsh. It was a total free for all. Hammond had his back toward the mat for sure, but when you compare that to how long it takes to get pin calls in other situations just absolutely ridiculous. Take Morgan's match for instance; he had McDiarmid on his back for quite a while and you could obviously see his shoulders touch several times and the pin was never called. Again that was just a horrible call by Hammond's referee. Such a shame.

And while I'm talking about Morgan, that was a crazy throw that he had from feet to backed up to put McDiarmid on his back. Just absolutely crazy. What a move!

Re: 285 Quarters: Lawson vs. Bobby Telford (Iowa) ...

As exciting as it was to see McCutcheon's effort and win, it was equally frustrating to watch LawDog lose. In the articles leading up to the tournament, they kept talking about how they were going to get Lawson's offense rolling. I saw none of that in this match. When is he going to figure out that he can't let it go to the second and third periods to win against Telford? Telford always rides him hard, builds a minute of riding time then cuts Jimmy loose and stalls out for the rest of the period. He then takes bottom gets the quick escape and holds Jimmy off to win on riding time. It's the same every match when these two go at it. Jimmy needs to learn to change his tactics; he needs to be much more offensive in the first and get the takedown.

Re: 285 Quarters: Lawson vs. Bobby Telford (Iowa) ...

Not sure why people keep bringing up control in regards to the fall. You absolutely do not need control to secure a fall. if your shoulders are on the mat for one second you are pinned rears less of what your opponent is doing.

Re: 285 Quarters: Lawson vs. Bobby Telford (Iowa) ...

you're absolutely right. I think I would rather be looking for consistency with such calls. Hopefully Hammond can fight back with a chip on his shoulder!

Re: 285 Quarters: Lawson vs. Bobby Telford (Iowa) ...

Having wrestled, I understand that. It's just a pin you rarely see called and totally inconsistent with the much longer " internal debates" that the refs seem to be going through in other much more obvious pinning situations.
