Basketball program: What happened?

If only he could recruit them the same level talent
Before Sanderson came to PSU, PSU wrestling was solid, but was behind programs like Iowa and Minnesota and a few others. However, his presence served as a magnet to attract young men who wanted to be coached by a legend, and now PSU is so far ahead of the second ranked program such that that program can’t even see PSU.

I wonder what an equivalent of Sanderson, or somebody even close to him, would do with the basketball program. Because there are so many more basketball programs compared to wrestling programs, it’s not an exact comparison. But because PSU has no basketball tradition on which to fall back, it probably needed to spend the bucks and hire a big name coach many years ago, but in this new era of big spending at PSU it probably should make a run at a coach at a major program like yesterday.

There are a lot of coaches who have coached at multiple big places. like Rick Barnes, Bruce Pearl. John Calipari, Rick Pitino, etc., so PSU should be able to lure a successful coach at a big school if it makes him an offer that he couldn’t refuse. Absent that, PSU basketball is going to continue to be what if always has been: a non-entity.

If we got the equivalent of Sanderson--top HS kids would be fighting to come here

That was my point. And I disagree with those who say that PSU couldn’t attract one of these name coaches, because money talks. Like I said, if PSU continues with the status quo or hires another coach like the last handful, this program never is going to be a consistent winner in basketball and will continue to produce results mostly like the past two seasons.

There hasn't been a coach that has dominated like Cael has these last 15 years in a long long time. Dan Gable's Iowa wrestling. John Wooden at UCLA. Hope Cael can keep it up for another 15 years and he might be the GOAT.

Here's your list with current salaries in millions

Bill Self $9.6
Calipari $7
Izzo $6.1
Pearl $5.7
Barnes $5.7
Drew $5.1
Hurley $5
Underwood $4.7
Sampson $4.6
Oats $4.5
Buzz William's $4.4
Musselman $4.2
Mike Woodson $4.2
Mick Cronin $4.1
Tommy Lloyd $4.1

Maybe Drew or Underwood. Mick Cronin is a Cincy guy so maybe he would leave the left coast. Any of these are a huge reach. Of course just offer $8 million and see who comes. Who cares about fiscal responsibility?! We want to win!

Fiscal responsibility?
Call Pegula and beg for cash--we do that often

One of the mysteries about PSU athletic program - the MBB team. Seems like all of the other programs are solid, why not the BB team?

That would be basketball teams (men's & womens)
True but the WBB was good under Portland. They were consistently in the tournament, made a bunch of S16 and E8--even a Final Four (UConn was just too good)--theynever won but they were really good until they forced her out.

The men's team has never been close to that level which is the frustration--or at least mine with the program.

Yes, the Women's teams were very good under her but that was years ago. Since then, no consistency, in fact the program is in shambles.
