I’m visiting Prague next week and want to try a few of their beers. I know about Pilsner Urquell and Budvar, but am looking for other suggestions. This board is usually full of knowledge of adult beverages so what say you?

My favorite was Krusovice.

But, skip the beer and dream away the day with Prague's real adult beverage attraction...

You ever drink absinthe? What’s it like?

Yes! Was in Prague for NYE in 2002 and went back in 2003 or 2004 with a visiting cousin. For NYE, they were selling shots in the Stare Mesto (Old Town square) and I did a couple. My Army buddy did one and puked immediately. It's not my favorite - has a licorice-y mint taste when consumed straight. When I went back, I went to an Absinthe bar with my cousin. The presentation is more dramatic - pour the absinthe in a glass, place a straining spoon on top with a cube of sugar, light it on fire, and let the sugar melt into the glass. Stir, drink (or add some Laudanum for extra kick like they used to do in the day...). Again, not my favorite taste, but the experience is cool to do once. I do like Sazeracs though, which is weird. The whole hallucinatory thing with absinthe is not something I experienced, noting I've only had it a couple times in limited quantities (and pretty sure the absinthe didn't have wormwood in it...).

As Midnighter mentioned the Krusovice was very good. Go to any Alberts grocery and you'll have a ton of selection.

Some good restaurant/taverns we were at last year were the Peklo at the Strahov Monastary and Mecenase at Mala Strana

Strahov Monastary, the Klaster Dark was very malty.

Beautiful location to sit on outside patio and enjoy a big ass pilsner.

Something to try also is the traditional Czech liquor, Becherovka. Little like a high alcohol schnapps. It's a bit of an acquired taste. Ginger and Cinnamon are the flavor. It's all over the Czech Rep. and we usually pick some up when there.

Wifey and I were in a tiny town in the south part of the country, Cesky Krumlov. Sat in a very small local brewery playing cribbage and drinking Pivovar Eggenberg dunkel.
They spoke no English and we only English. Terrifically friendly people who from all indications,as they gathered around to watch, had never seen cribbage before. That or they were were happy to see my wife kick my butt game after game

I'll just say that Urquell on tap in Prague tasted much better than the bottled version I can get here.

We were in Prague,Kraków, and Warsaw last year. It was a Pilsner but I do not remember the name. I got the same beer in all 3 locations.

Pilsener Urqeill (sp?)

Yep. About 6 years ago they introduced the unfiltered (nefiltrovany) beers which could only be found in kegs and near impossible to find in the US. Budvar, Urquell, Gambrinus all started creating it. Much more flavorful than the clear bottled variety.

I found the site below gives a nice tour of top 10 spots to have a beer. Ones that stood out:
Strahov Monastary - Very nice cavern style restaurant there between castle and Petrin tower
Ziskov neighborhood - Cool looking yuppified neighborhood
Letna and Vinohrady parks - Great views of the Charles bridge and castle.

One place that gets a lot of attention is U Flecku. This is mainly a tourist trap and the Czechs in general avoid it.

I agree with the two previous poster’s recommendation of Staropramen. Was definitely our beer of choice while vacationing in Prague. Beautiful & fun city...you’re going to love it.
