Beitz injects life into Central York wrestling

Awesome read from my back yard. I had NO idea he was coaching Central York which is literally five minutes from my house.

“You gotta love the sport, you gotta have fun and you’ve gotta have gratitude,” Beitz said after a recent practice. “Every day, you have to be grateful. It’s a privilege to be here to workout, it’s not a punishment to be here and work out with these guys.”

“(Beitz has) made wrestling so much fun," Chatterton said. "I’ve always enjoyed wrestling, but you couldn’t see that a few years ago in my teammates.”

Chatterton added, “Everyone didn’t enjoy coming in the room, now you see people sticking around after practice and enjoying wrestling and to just keep grinding."

This reads like an article about Cael... but is about Seth Beitz. The influence is written all over Seth's way of handling his team... and so is the success. You could put Cael's name in for Beitz's and I'd think I was reading a Penn State article to the word.

To have Seth take 6 kids to Districts from Central York... is AMAZING from that program. Unheard of out of a city school like Central. One can... easily make the simple deductions.

All the credit in the world to Seth Beitz.

But one should ask, if Cael stays at PSU, what will his "coaching tree" legacy look like in 5-10 years ?

I have a feeling we will see many articles like these at the years pass by.

Programs finding new success whilw the kids are learning life lessons & enjoying their sport in ways that they didn't anticipate.

Nice read!

amalone, I wouldn't exactly call Central a city school. It's probably less city feeling than West York. I'm sure James English is happy to see the step up at his alma mater.

My son is a freshman at Red Lion so I got to witness the Central team first hand. Beitz is doing good things and that team wrestles with a ton of heart. I agree that they are far from a city school though.

The school district draws it's student's from both the city and out lying areas.

I'm not saying they don't draw some kids from the city but the school isn't considered a city school. Most of their kids come from areas outside the city.

Obviously, you're unaware of the demographics of the school. There is only one school in the dead center of York, York High, as Harrisburg has numerous high schools on it's periphery... but are considered city schools. I included Central because of the facts you're not including such as severe poverty levels which are rampant in the district. Just because the school, moved from out of the city to the suburbs due to millions of dollars of state funding... doesn't mean a great number of students don't live at a poverty level or below as from the evidence stated. They wouldn't be readily the candidates who's parents might be willing or getting them into wrestling...i.e. taking them to tournaments, paying for tournament entrance fees, paying for expensive wrestling shoes, singlets, head gear to get to a level to get to districts or states in the state of PA. That's what I meant. If I had to expand on the statement.

Fact about Central School District: According to the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center, 31.3% of the District’s pupils lived at 185% or below the Federal Poverty level as shown by their eligibility for the federal free or reduced price school meal programs in 2012.

Schools listed with a higher free or reduced lunch program include Red Lion, Spring Grove, Northeastern, Dover and Eastern York. Doesn't necessarily mean they are city schools.

And yes I do know that there is only one school in center city York considering I'm also from the area.

Central school district lines extend more out of the city than include the city. In my opinion and I'm sure others as well West York is considered more of a city school the Central.

I'm more interested in how DNess has a son in high school only 2 years after appearing in the NCAA finals.
