It's a bit after the fact but here goes with my two cents...

My wife and I live in Pasadena so we were at the Rose 3 years ago and drove to the Fiesta 2 years ago. Like everyone, we were hoping for the Rose again so we could roll out of bed for the parade and then walk to the game but alas, B10 folks had different ideas. From a cost perspective, the Cotton was second on our list compared to the Orange as the flight to Miami was a whole lot more and the hotels were a bit more pricey though we would have gone to either one.

We flew out Dec 26th and when we checked in to our hotel in Arlington, it was clear we were at a Memphis hotel. Ratio was probably 8 to 1. We went to Texas Live the first night and saw more Memphis folks and only a few PSU people. We both liked Texas Live though their beer choices could be improved.

The next day (27th) we visited the team hotel, picked up a few Cotton Bowl items for family, I spoke with a few players/families and they said that yeah, the Rose would have been great, the Cotton Bowl has treated them the best compared to any of the last four (incl Rose). They were also excited to play in AT&T. We saw the Battle of the Bands which I thought was pretty good. Fans were probably 60-40 Memphis to PSU. Later that night we went to the North Texas Alumni welcome party at Community Beer Company. I really liked that brewery and talked with some great fellow alums. It was a smaller crowd than the Phx alumni party at the Fiesta Bowl but still a good time.

Game day (28th) was the only day with crappy weather. Had it been dry, I think all of the activities they had set up around AT&T Stadium would have been really fun. My only criticism was that I think the pep rally should have been the day before not a few hours before the game. I won't go into the game since it's been discussed here over the past 4-5 days. I don't know how it looked on TV but in the stadium it felt 60-40 Memphis to PSU. I don't go with these 70-30, 75-25 ratios I've read. The stadium was great though I think they could have made an effort to pull the Cowboys merchandise to make it feel like the focus was on the Cotton Bowl. Memphis fans we set around were very nice. It was actually a couple of PSU fans that I was annoyed with and embarrassed for the way they acted. After the game, we went to Texas Live to hang out watch the first CFP game and wait for the Uber surge pricing to go down. I enjoyed the two bars in Texas Live and Live by Loews hotel bar we visited.

On our last day, we visited Dealey Plaza which was great to see and flew back to LAX through PHX. Our layover was fun since we could see the happy Clemson and sad OSU folks.

OVERALL: I thought the Cotton Bowl experience was great and I'd do it again. My only regret was that we didn't visit Ft. Worth. I would have liked to have seen the Stockyards and visited some of the bars around there. I know this may rankle a few on here who consider the Cotton Bowl akin to the Idaho Potato Bowl but we had about the same experience we had at the Fiesta Bowl in terms of activities/bars/restaurants/game experience. The only difference was the weather.

We went to the Rose Bowl in 1995. A while back but except for a little better weather and the Rose Bowl Parade , we enjoyed the Cotton Bowl just as much. We stayed at the Ft Worth Omni , great hotel within walking distance of Sundance Square which had all the shopping and restaurants for every type of fan. Plenty of Penn Staters at the hotel and in the Sundance area. The drive from the hotel to the stadium was without traffic and easy to find and park . The stadium was huge and impressive . Given the weather , the dome was a welcomed amenity. We weren't impressed with our seats for the price from the university , $225 a ticket but it didn't detract us from enjoying our Nittany Lions win the Cotton Bowl. A Bloody Mary and a vodka and tonic at $26 was expected but it kept us from over indulging . lol . Easy out and back to the hotel . Back to the Sundance to watch the Ohio State game at Buffalo Bro's sports bar. Great bar food , big screen TV'S and plenty of fans from all over the country . We had a late flight back to Pennsylvania so we toured and had lunch at the Ft Worth stockyards . Maybe not for some of our elite fans but it was special how they preserved the history of that area and time. Again great restaurants , shops and people . Summing up , it was a great trip. If you make it fun and search out all the area has to offer , it will be fun. The thing most that I took away from our trip is the smiles on all the players who expressed how much fun they had and how well they were treated . They truly had a great time . Hope you Penn State elite enjoyed the game on your couch .

We purchased our tickets from Stubhub for $100 each. They were listed as $250/each and were good seats for $100 (not sure I'd say the same if we paid the face value). I've not heard from one person who went to the Cotton that had a bad time. I get the flight to Dallas wasn't the cheapest but the flight to LA was not going to be either.

I was last in Dallas about twenty years ago. I know, things change. However, my favorite part of the trip to the Metroplex was a visit to Fort
Worth. My family loved the Stockyards. Rodeo, buying cowboy boots, food. Fort Worth had more southwest to it than its much bigger neighbor.

If anyone wants some Penn State Cotton Bowl t-shirts at an affordable price you should visit Boscovs Department Store or their website. They do a nice job with shirts for all the major colleges and many local PA schools. Tshirts, hoodies, hats, glasses, folding chairs, etc.

My friend just shopped there. His daughter was accepted into Villanova and he said he saved a small fortune over the high prices found at the college bookstore.

Nothing I saw with "Cotton Bowl Champions", but friendly prices otherwise.

I hear Fairgambit Enterprises is working on some extremely low quality Cotton Bowl apparel at hugely inflated prices as soon as they get the stuff shipped from their Vietnamese sweat shops.

Good post and I had a similar experience. Yes, the plane tickets were expensive but in the end, I paid around $580 round trip out of Philly. When we were looking at Rose Bowl arrangements, flights weren't much less and the team hotel in LA would have been around $500/night.

The Cotton Bowl was my best bowl experience so far and I'm glad I was there.

I should have mentioned that right after the game, at Texas Live, the Cotton Bowl clothes were 1/2 price so that was good for us.

Also, with the Rose, I imagine folks are conflicted on where to stay. The back and forth between Dallas and Arlington is so much easy than Pasadena and LA. As you note, hotels in LA are going to be expensive and if you rent a car (which may be required if you want to do other activities), parking can be a pain. Hotels in Pasadena are long booked up for the Rose Parade so I'm sure it can be a pain to come out here. One of the positives of living in Pasadena is I don't have to worry about any of that.
