It is a slow time and I am bored so I was looking at recruiting classes and I have to say

Is there any recruiting class that could beat 2013?

125- Dance/Tomasello
133-Tomasello/Heil (we know how Okie state guys like to suck weight...lol
141-Heil/Ashnault
149-Zain
157- I-mart/Collica
165-I-mart/bo Jordan
174-Bo Jordan/Epperly
184- Aboundar
197- J'den Cox
Hwt- Adam Coon

That is about as stacked as a lineup can get.....do you think there is a recruiting class out there that could take them in a dual

I would think so. Were Ramos, Dake, Taylor, Perry, Ruth and Nelson all in the 2009 class?

yes I am sure of all of them being 2009 except Nelson, I am only 90% sure on him. I think Grajales and Caldwell were also in that group.

I think you could probably make a pretty stacked lineup out of most classes. Here is 2011

125- Megaludis/Garrett
133-Brewer/Garrett
141-Stieber
149-Sueflohn
157- Ian Miller/James Green
165-Dieringer
174-Storley
184- Avery
197- McIntosh
Hwt- Gwiazdowski

Good one, they would be formidable...I say toss ups at 125,133,174....slight edge to 2011 at 141 and HWT, Slight edge to 2013 at 184,197 MAJOR EDGE to 2011 at 165 and MAJOR edge to 2013 at 149,157(with Imart there)..I think 2013 wins

D1CW has a "recruiting rewind" for 2005 thru 2010, and top 150-200 for 2010 thru 2016 HS classes:
http://www.d1collegewrestling.net/Recruiting_Front.html

I'll do a partial list of the classes -- meaning, I'm pretty wiped out and will let others fill in the blanks and correct any errors in the weights.

2005:
125 - Troy Nickerson, Angel Escobedo
133 - Jayson Ness, Franklin Gomez
141 - (no champs; Reece Humphrey)
149 - Brent Metcalf,
157 - Dustin Schlatter, Gregor Gillespie
165 - (no champs; Dan Vallimont)
174 - Jay Borschel
184 - Mike Pucillo, Max Askren
197 - Jake Varner
285 - David Zabriskie

Pretty good year; also had Craig Brester and Hudson Taylor at 197.

very good year, I would pay BIG money to see Young Metcalf against current Zain, There would be fireworks in that match.

2006:
125 - Anthony Robles
133 - (no champs; Mike Grey)
141 - (no champs; Montell Marion, Jimmy Kennedy, Mike Thorn)
149 - Darrion Caldwell
157 - Jordan Burroughs; JP O'Connor; Bubba Jenkins
165 - (no champs; Andy Rendos)
174 - Jon Reader
184 - (no champs; John Dergo)
197 - (no champs; Trevor Brandvold)
285 - (no champs; Ricky Alcala)

Great class at 157 (also had Fittery, Moley, and Saddoris), erratic elsewhere. Mack Lewnes (174) was also in this class.

ouch

2007:
125 - (no champs; Zach Sanders)
133 - (no champs)
141 - Kellen Russell
149 - Frank Molinaro
157 - (no champs)
165 - (no champs; Brandon Hatchett)
174 - (no champs; Nick Amuchastegui, Chris Henrich)
184 - (no champs; Kirk Smith, Chris Honeycutt)
197 - Cam Simaz, Dustin Kilgore
285 - Zach Rey

Here's where I'm forgetting a number of weights: Joe LeBlanc (I think 184), Tyler Nauman (174/184?), Bekzod (157/165?)

Ryan Flores (285) and Clayton Foster (197) were also in this class.

Not a lot of champs in this class, either.

2008:
125 - Matt McDonough,
133 - Jordan Oliver
141 - (no champs; BJ Futrell)
149 - Jordan Oliver
157 - (no champs; Jason Welch)
165 - (no champs; Peter Yates)
174 - Andrew Howe, Matt Brown
184 - Quentin Wright, Steve Bosak
197 - Quentin Wright
285 - (no champs; Odie Delaney)

Of course you can't have Oliver at 2 weights in a hypothetical dual, so alternates would be Tyler Graff, Andrew Long, or Scott Sentes (133); or Jason Chamberlain or Donnie Vinson (149)

Robert Hamlin (184) was also in this class. So was Jesse Dong (because Dong).

Some real star power, and some real lineup gaps as well.

EDIT: I forgot, Howe won his title at 165.

2009:
125 - (no champs; Jarrod Patterson)
133 - The Stare
141 - Kyle Dake, Kendrick Maple
149 - Kyle Dake
157 - David Taylor, Kyle Dake, Derek St. John
165 - David Taylor, Kyle Dake
174 - Ed Ruth, Chris Perry
184 - Ed Ruth
197 - (no champs; Nick Heflin)
285 - Tony Nelson

Class also included Tyler Caldwell (165), Eric Grajales (149), Jimmy Sheptock (184).

Except for 125 and 197, this is an out-freaking-standing class.

2010:
125 - Jesse Delgado
133 - Logan Stieber
141 - Logan Stieber
149 - Drake Houdashelt
157 - (no champs; Dylan Ness)
165 - (no champs; Taylor Walsh)
174 - (no champs; Robert Kokesh, The Stache)
184 - (no champs; Taylor Meeks)
197 - Kyven Gadson
285 - (no champs; Mike McMullan, Bobby Telford)

This class had some good wrestlers who would've been champs if not for 2009.

Also in 2010: Alan Waters (125), AJ Schopp (133); Mitchell Port, Devin Carter (141); Josh Kindig, David Habat (149); Tyler Wilps (174)

2011:
125 - Nico Megaludis
133 - Cody Brewer, Nahshon Garrett
141 - (no champs; Evan Henderson)
149 - (no champs; Hunter Stieber)
157 - Alex Dieringer
165 - Alex Dieringer
174 - (no champs; Logan Storley)
184 - (no champs; Nate Brown)
197 - (no champs; Morgan McIntosh)
285 - Nick Gwiazdowski

Also in this class: James Green, Ian Miller (157), Connor Medberry (285).

Five really good champs, a couple other good wrestlers, and a lot of unfulfilled promise. This class should've been far better than it was.

2012:
125 - Thomas Gilman (OK, I'm giving him this year)
133 - (no champs; Cory Clark)
141 - (no champs; Jimmy Gulibon)
149 - Jason Tsirtsis
157 - (no champs; Dylan Palacio)
165 - (no champs; Isaac Jordan)
174 - Iceman Davis
184 - Gabe Dean
197 - (no champs; Brent Pfarr)
285 - (no champs; Ty Walz)

Woof.

2013:
125 - Nathan Tomasello
133 - ??
141 - Dean Heil
149 - Zain Retherford
157 - Isaiah Martinez
165 - Isaiah Martinez
174 - (no champs; Bo Jordan)
184 - (no champs; Domenic Abounader)
197 - J'Den Cox
285 - (no champs; Adam Coon)

Also in this class: Joey Dance (125); Anthony Ashnault (141); Brandon Sorenson (149). Probably the best backup for Martinez at either weight is Brian Murphy (157) -- or go with Martinez at 157, BoJo at 165, and Zach Epperly at 174.

At this point I'm gonna stop labeling as no champs.

2014:
125 - Zeke Moisey, Dalton Macri
133 - Stevan Micic, Jered Cortez
141 - Solomon Chishko, Joey McKenna
149 - Micah Jordan
157 - Jason Nolf
165 - Daniel Lewis, Chandler Rogers
174 - Bo Nickal
184 - ??
197 - ?? (maybe Anthony Cassar if healthy)
285 - Kyle Snyder

133 - Kaid Brock
141 - Matt Kolodzik, Ke-shawn Hayes
149 - Pat Duggan
157 - Mike Kemerer, Jojo Smith
165 - Cenzo, Logan Massa
174 - Myles Martin, Anthony Valencia
184 - Myles Martin, Zahid Valencia, Bobby Steveson
197 - Kollin Moore, Lance Benick
285 - Zack Chakonis, Michael Johnson

Would be cool to add the highest # of NCAA Points for 10 guys (1 at each weight class) from the same recruiting class...to see which one would have the highest total. Where there's no champs, the highest number of points from a non-champ would be used. May try to do one year later to see how challenging it is.

Placement and Advancement Points won't be horrible...I'm thinking Bonus Points might be. I have history for the PSU guys, but not others.

that would be impressive to put all that together

The D1CW recruiting rewinds have that info for 2005 thru 2010.

Somebody would have to calculate the other years ... can get individual points for some years from the PSU Wrestling Club's tournaments page, then would need to add points.

The points Earl Smith uses are not NCAA Points, unless I'm misunderstanding you?

I wrote that pretty sloppily. What I meant:
Earl's recruiting rewinds do use career NCAA Tournament Points for wrestlers who graduated HS in those years. There are a few outliers he partially calculated (Matt Brown?), but otherwise it's what you're looking for.

Any wrestlers who graduated HS 2011 or later aren't in Earl's recruiting rewind. For those, easiest way would be to dump individual scoring from the PSWC website into Excel and run a pivot table.

Agree. I like this site for the original rankings for the incoming college class:

http://d1collegewrestling.net/Top200_2013.html

And the NCAA's winner is...

The Class of 2009, with 228.5 Points. Dake was used for 3 years, and Ruth for 2.

Next was the Class of 2005, with 207.5 Points. Interesting that their NCAA Points from 2010 were used in every case except 157.

Next was the Class of 2013, with 183 Points. Their story is incomplete, as most of these guys have 2 years left, and they got 0 points from 133 and only 3 Points at 184. This class could top 2009.

2013 will pass 2009 in 2 yrs. Zain will likely make up that 45-pt difference by himself.

I know you're being light-hearted...still, I thought I'd show the model...Zain can't add much if he stays 149, and I'm guessing Jason may add a couple points at 157, but the real gains to be made are 133 and 184.

First is the NCAA year that is included, then the wrestlers name, followed by the points. The listing is in weight class order.

2015 Nathan Tomasello (Ohio State) 24.5
----- 133 ----- No points
2016 Dean Heil (Oklahoma State) 20
2016 Zain Retherford (Penn State) 28.5
2015 Isaiah Martinez (Illinois) 24.5
2016 Bo Jordan (Ohio State) 16.5
2016 Zach Epperly (Virginia Tech) 20.5
2016 Abounader 3
2016 Jden Cox (Missouri) 25
2016 Adam Coon (Michigan) 20.5

(*takes a bow for once*)

The 1996 class had some good wrestlers:
125# Steve Abas 2x NCCA champ
125# Jeremy Hunter 1x champ
133# Eric Juergens 2x champ
141# Michael Lightner 1x champ
141# Carl Perry 1x champ
149# Adam Tirapelle 1x champ
157# T.J. Williams 2x champ
184# Brad Vering 1x champ
197# Mark Munoz 1x champ

Since we're all going crazy waiting for the season to start, here's a useless but very impressive fact. The 2014 recruiting class has to include the most incredible influx of talent to one team, all starting with the same letter, ever! Nolf, Nickal, and Nevills, truly amazing!!!!
