I saw Coach Moorhead is taking his Miss State team into Kansas State. He looked goodt in his suit on the ESPN game day show. Go Bulldogs!!!!

It got me thinking about tonight.

Coach Franklin has a big game tonight. He has to have his team ready and motivated to play. Last week? Well not his best performance.

I'm a Franklin supporter, but the football world is cruel. What was is never as important as what is. So today is a test. If we see Penn State struggle, while Miss State performs, the question will inevitably come up.. How important was Moorhead?

Moorhead was important to correct the system after the disastrous Donovan/Hackenberg era.

Having accomplished that, I am glad he is gone. The way Moorhead used Barkley in 2017 sometimes made no sense and it was clear Moorhead wanted to impose his system above all else. The loss to Ohio State was his fault. I would say that he fixed a broken offense and helped Penn St win the Big Ten, but later cost Penn St. a Heisman winner and a shot at the playoff

I did not see any problems with the offense last week.

FIRE. FRANKLIN.

The issue last week was defense.

I thought the entire team stunk the place out. Without the penalties I don't know if the offense scores in the first half. The punting game came up small when needed most. The receivers were poor.

Everyone rightly notes the bad defensive play. The secondary was toasted, the DL got little to no pressure, I get it.

This Penn State team will go as far as the offense can take it.

We will see.

Interesting game between the two. Moorhead has brought some enthusiasm to the Bulldogs. People expect them to win. KSU is kinda under the radar, even by their standard.

Two 3 and outs so far.

KSU has a problem. Snider was old in 1997. That was 21 years ago. We have been there.

Miss St.’s O looks identical to PSU in 2016-17, with slightly worse talent. Moorhead has a good system but I suspect he is not very dynamic. Also feel sorry for the OC. This offense looks so familiar that Moorhead can’t be letting him have basically any autonomy.

Franklin is superior at leadership and will continue to find good coaches. Moorhead would still be at Fordham if not for JF.

Lots of early penaltys thus far.

Fitzgerald is not an impressive throwing QB, at least not through two drives. Big run by the RB got them the FG.

Basically, they look like PSU in the first 4 games of 2016. In fact, they may be a little ahead of where we were as they get used to a brand new offense. It will all come together and they will look awesome later in the season.

I can't stand the Moorhead offensive line blocking schemes. On that last MSU drive the end zone shot showed some of the gaps that get left. A lineman and a blitzer run free to pressure the QB and an incomplete leads to 3 instead of 7.

This was one of the things I had hoped would change in this year's offense under Rahne, but it is really too much of a change given the current system of plays.

And he showed NFL teams the best way to stop Barkley. Have the opposing offensive coordinator call plays where Barkley stands flat footed for 2 seconds before handing him the ball.
And that’s what he did with Barkley last year against OSU time after time after time. He wasnt fooling anybody much less the OSU D line. And that was the last time Jo Mo consistently ran that play the rest of the year. There seems to be an institutional “stubbornness” when it comes to football coaches. Sometimes they are the last to know when something isnt working.

I think they are light years ahead of where we were when Moorhead arrived. Mullen used a very similar offense prior.

The biggest issue I see is Fitzgerald has lacked the proper touch and placement on his throws. The crossing route on 3rd and long has been his best throw. The first and second down calls (after the penalty) reminded me of us. QB Sweep and inside run with 20 to gain?

I get skewered every time I bring this up about the OL. We have good players, let them do what they would do best

Moorhead's scheme's are good if you've got an undersized line that needs to double team, but that has the mobility to trap and find the defender. It was probably a good match at Fordham. His passing schemes are excellent and that, coupled with the threat of Barkley, became our strength/equalizer in the B1G. It came at the expense of a power running game.

Last year Barkley kept defenses near the line of scrimmage, hence our big play offense downfield. That might not happen this year if we don't catch well. Look for Dotson to make his entry today if Shorter cannot go and the game is close. He has the hands for wet conditions.

And yes, I think there is no doubt that Moorhead is stubborn. Even Barkley can't fend off two guys while standing still. Stubbornness won't be an issue today for MSU though. They're going against a Big12 defense.

This year the hand-off seems a bit more dynamic, which is good and will prevent the big running losses, but I see the same problems recurring on the offensive line. It isn't that we have bad linemen.

They wouldn't have made the defense tackle better or cover receivers better last week.
I was actually agreeing with you thatbit was the defense and replying more to the post saying this week will tell us how important Moorhead was to us. Moorhead has two years with Barkley....the only fair measure would be if Moorhead would have stayed this year and we could see how he would do without Barkley.

KSU intercepts and quickly scores to make it 24-10. Still too much to overcome, I think, but the interception play was indicative of how you beat MSU and PSU. MSU QB had no outlet and, despite the RB getting a block, the extra man puts on the pressure and forces a bad throw. Rolling Trace, particularly in wet conditions, is the answer and could lead to some big plays downfield. Other option that could work well would be screen plays to a tight end or one of our faster slot receivers.

KSU defense that bad or Moorhead's scheme actually very good at running with a run first qb at the helm?

ESPN Gameday quoted Moorhead as saying that Fitzgerald should prepare himself for winning the Heisman trophy...

KSU is not good. Moorhead’s offense will be good, but KSU is really not good.

The interesting part to me is that KSU hasn't sold out to stop the run at all. We continually saw teams sell out to stop the run. Over 500 yards given up, 300+ on the ground.

Snyder is confused....he’s not sure what MSU is running.

Grooming the OC/former KSU QB for his eventual retirement. I think he's under contract for an additional 4 years they said.
I thought he was grooming his son to take over which is why he’s holding the program hostage.

He may be. I know Snyder left for a few years and they dropped pretty hard. Much like VT, zero history before one head coach led them to success.

Too bad he didn't feel the same way about Barkley.
It’s a lot easier to shut down a RB than a dual threat QB. If you spy or load the box then he has more room to complete passes. I doubt seriously that Fitzgerald wins the heisman, but I will lay money that whomever does win is a QB.

I love Joe, if JF doesn't workout .... I'd go with him in a second! I just hope we can get him before someone else high profile snatches him up. I'm afraid, UM may go after him if Jimmy does;t work out .....
