Biggest seeding jokes of all time.

Broken Leg Suriano at #3 was much worse.
To this day, this is the one truly scummy thing Cael did. He knew full well that Suriano couldn't go, but wanted to keep Picc in Gilman's quarter and cost a hard working alternate a chance to wrestle. I get it, but it sucked. I'm glad they changed the rule.

Brooks is the one guy I'm not that concerned about. He's just so much better than the field. The coaches said he wants to give freestyle a go this year after the season and they're just trying to keep him healthy per AB's request. That's the reason for low match count. He doesn't care about the seeding because he's better than his competitors.

Oh, I don't think that it will impact the actual result. On-form Brooks is going to roll these guys up.

I was just addressing the seeding. The seeding is fine. Given the current, approved criteria, Brooks can't be any higher than he's seeded.

The Gilman-Piccinnini part was likely true. Cael wanted to keep the 34th guy out? Lol.

The afterward "Cael wouldn't let me wrestle" drama said a lot about a difficult family. I agree with you that Suriano should've been withdrawn, but walking thru that minefield was a far bigger factor than any consideration for #34.

I read this differently, saying basically the same thing that you are.

"Wanted to keep Gilman-Picc together, and in doing so it cost the 34th guy his shot"

Not that the second part was the goal, but that is was an outcome of the first.

Slight misreading. #34 was just a consequence. Keeping Picc in Gilman's quarter was the purpose. Cael definitely didn't care about #34.

Hmm wasnt that a 5 champ year? Yep! IMO our strongest team ever, that coasted to a championship. Suriano wanted to go in the worst way and we provided him the 'chance' to heal right up to the 11th hour 59 minute mark.

Now your are just talking out of your ass!

i guess i shouldn't be surprised but complaining about a 9 seed when he has losses to the 4,5, and 8 and his best win is the 13 is so funny

Anyone else want to comment on this? I know JS doesn’t throw crap against a wall, but are there other opinions on this (like they really didn’t know for certain that Suriano wouldn’t be able to go)?

Many on other boards and even this one give Cael grief about the "he's down wrestling in the room right now" comment.

In fact that was true. What isn't known by outside circles is what did 'wrestling in the room' mean literally? Was he just going through the motions 10% healed or 90%?

Anyone who plays fantasy football sees a player coming back from a broken bone listed as questionable or a game time decision, with the implication that last week of healing up to the point of a doctor giving the green light to return is just that, a best guess. Sometimes they actually don't know on Monday what they will on Friday, even with a serious injury rehab.

The team certainly thought there was a chance at Big10s Suriano might make it back with another 2 weeks of healing. Did they know the night before nationals he wasn't going? Sure that's possible, none of us know for sure. Or on the morning of, did they tape his ankle up like an immovable cast and watch him go through a test warmup, only to decide then it wasn't going to happen, maybe, guaranteed none of us know the motions the coaches, trainers and Nicky went through in those final hours. The specilation is Nicky wanted to go and was vetoed, and that started us down the road to hell.

I can tell you this. Suriano had already beat the two finalists that year. He was also the 6th best wrestler on that team. Think about that for a second.

I don't think anyone had any real concerns about the points, the seeding, or who was going to wrestle whom at 125 that year.

Actually they withdrew him Wednesday afternoon, or at least made the decision to do Wednesday afternoon.

Not worth it. Happened many years ago, and the dude's been unable to reconcile it. Nothing said here will change the mind of a man that has been hanging onto something like that for so long.

Anyone else have the impression that hand wringing over seeding is localized mostly to fans and some coaches? I suspect that the wrestlers themselves have the attitude that if they’re going to be the champ (or AA) they’ll have to face and defeat the best guys eventually so let’s get to it.

These guys tend to have alpha male energy and likely believe they can beat just about anyone in their weight class on a good day.

Yes, absolutely.

That said, bad seeding distorts brackets, especially in consolations. Bracket distortions happen because of mat results -- great! Caused by admin reasons -- ugh.

I'm sure Sasso didn't care about 2nd vs 3rd at states, but that's no excuse for PA to put him against Pletcher in the quarters. That deprived the fans of the correct finals, and moved the best match to a non-televised round.

I think how badly he lost to Allred is what cost him the most. He looked awful on his feet - Allred just smoked him in Neutral. He losses a really close match like 2-1 after SV & TB, he probably doesn't drop that far. But how badly he was dominated by a 5-loss wrestler almost certainly factored into it.
Wrestlestat has Truax at 11 and Trumble at 13. The seeding rewards wrestlers for winning weak conferences too much.

Insert Wrestlestat joke here. Their rankings are career cumulative.

Intermat is the gold standard for college rankings. Earl has Elam 2, Truax 3. Look at his 197 rankings -- he almost perfectly nailed the seeds for the entire field.
