Blueprint for Pitt is in plain sight after Saturday

If there is a better DB out there than Clifton Duck I have not seen him yet. That dude is the real deal.

Add Corey Sutton and their other WR to that list. I'm willing to bet they are better than any WR's Pitt has!

It really pains some people to recognize a team may pose problem s for Penn State. I think PSU wins, but I am not part of the same crowd that predicted blowouts the last two times the teams met. Just like ASU was motivated, so it Pitt. This game is their season.
Many teams will pose a problem, I just don’t think using PSU’s first game mistakes and acting like Pitt does everything perfectly makes a whole lot of sense. We crushed Akron last year and Pitt struggled in their opener then the following week they were way more competitive than people thought based on what happened in the first week. Pitt played no one in the first week so there’s no way to tell how good or bad they are.

Why is it just Pitt that will be motivated? You think Franklin isn't ready for another shot at Narduzzi? You think Sanders won't be ready to go on Saturday, if what we heard about his recruitment is true? You think McSorley won't be ready to change how things ended for him the last time he was there? It's like some people think the only way we can win is if the other team comes out flat. I think we're going to come out and take it right at Pitt. And I don't think they'll be able to keep up with us for 4 quarters.

Haven’t you heard, we’re the only team that doesn’t get fired up, we’re the only team that makes mistakes in the first game, we’re the only team that can be easily figured out after one game by our opposition, we’re the only team that can’t game plan for our opponent....man, you need to pay better attention.

If you mean we have recruited worse than every team we play you are wrong. I am simply saying that people claiming App State is heads and shoulders above Pitt are wrong. We had a lot of mistakes that need to be addressed, and as I stated, I am sure the staff will be working hard to correct them. If you want to believe otherwise, go ahead. Last I looked, message boards were for discourse and discussion.

The only reason you posted what you posted was because you were trying to rationalize that if App State could take us to OT, then Pitt probably beats us since they recruit better than App State.

Yet, our recruits are ranked higher than every team we play sans OSU (and maybe Michigan?).

If you want to think Pitt can beat us, by all means, have at it. Discuss away. The recruiting rankings are not where I'd start.

My guess is, Pitt will try a:

Short, controlled passing game.

Power rush game and testing the edges with speedy backs. Win special teams. Aggressive, Run down blitzes aimed at disrupting the PS running attack. Force PS wrs to win one-to-one matchups.

App St laid it out there. Let’s see what kind of coaching adjustments are made to counter.
Game Plan to beat Pitt.....I attended the game last year when Oklahoma State went to Pitt and kicked their teeth in ( 59-21) Lots of film available from that game. Sure...different year....different teams....but Pitt can be beat like an old rug .....with some good old fashioned prep work by both Coaches and Players. Tough run game early( don't abandon the run !)....wear their DLine down....put them out of their misery in the 3rd quarter....win by 14 - 17 points.

Completely disagree with this. I think you beat pitt by passing and throwing it over the top. Pitt sells out to stop the run. Barkley didn’t find much room because their focus is run stopping

Well.....if you have two of the highest rated backs( out of HS) on your squad and a developing oline that was run blocking fairly well ( and improving) this past week ....you run the ball ! In addition....our passing game which is still trying to get in sync( but will be a strength by first B10 game) is still a work in progress. I am not suggesting in any way....that you don't take a shot over the top if the opportunity arises. What I am suggesting is ....that it makes good sense to pound Pitts DLine early and often..... IMO....given our still developing 2018 air attack.....if we abandon the run....we will lose. Should be great game.

Here is a big question...and not trying to be a troll towards Pitt....but maybe Appy State has better athletes than Pitt. I honestly don't know. I don't keep up much with Pitt but Appy State is really really good. On Sat, Appy State's athletes looked as good as ours.
Here are a few thoughts....keep in mind they had 3 points on offense in the 1st 3 quarters...am I right? clean up special teams first...can't let a 100 yard kickoff return. By the 4th quarter our defense was gassed. All the injuries and not having two keys players on defense really hurt....Givens and Shane Simmons.
This was the kind of game that will help our players...right out of the gate they faced serious adversity and pulled through. Very impressed with our kids...and obviously Appy State.
I expect a dog fight on Saturday night for sure.

Good post, Nash. The experience should serve us well going forward.

I'm not X's and O's expert. I only played the game. I never coached. Anyway, I don't think our 4th Q woes on defense can be attributed to fatigue. We were winning going away until App State identified a weakness and exploited it to the tune of four TDs without an adjustment from our side. I find that worrisome. I've yet to see anyone explain what the hell happened.

App State certainly has the speed on the perimeter. We'll see if Pitt has the speed to follow App State's game plan. From what I hear their defensive interior is pretty darn good. If true, then it will be a better test of our running game than App State.

I don't know if App State is that good or if we're that bad. We thought Ohio was good when they beat us with Tettleton in 2012 but they only went 4-4 in the MAC that year.

My guess is that it was a little bit of both on Saturday. PSU's DTs really struggled and App States sideline passes were just too easy. On the other hand the long pass from Thomas to Sutton was amazing. So was Howell's 53 yard punt that pinned us on our own 4 yard line.

We'll learn more this weekend. Hopefully PSU bounces back with a convincing win. If they lose at Pitt we could be in for a long year.

Yeah, let's compare a dismantled, sanctions-ridden team and it's performance vs Ohio to the '18 version.

The 2012 team followed a bad loss to Ohio with a worse loss to a horrible Virginia team. One of the differences between 2012 PSU and 2018 PSU, is that 2012 PSU lost their opener, while 2018 PSU won their opener.

Did we get lucky? Yes, absolutely. 80 percent of running backs would have taken a knee at the PSU 5 in bounds, then watched as a chip shot extra point distance field goal sailed through the uprights. In fact, had this been a conference game, EVERY team would have done that, as everyone in the Big Ten knows if you give Trace McSorley 1:40, he's going to beat you.

I'll take the win though.

Last week really means nothing...so, PSU had a rough game...lots of new parts, new coaching, etc...I know they will be ready for Pitt...PSU is still the favorite by far...Pitt will be ready and seems like we finally have a QB...lots of unproven players, so Albany win is just like your win...forgettable...can't wait for next week...I would wish you luck, but...

Appy St has very good CBs... Pitt doesn't have near the CBs to play man to man. Pitt tries that and it will be a long day for them

How even would they have played us last year? They caught us with everything new. The timing was perfect for them. So in this case they played us even with 2 stars.

It will take their fans out of the game and perhaps out to the parking lots.
Seriously? I’m pretty sure there will be close to an even split between pitt and PSU fans...our boys might be wearing the white jerseys, but the crowd could very well be as menacing for the panthers as it will be for the Nits.

Do you really believe that? In the heat of the moment with the end zone in front of you for the go-ahead touchdown, you really believe 80% of running backs would take a knee? When does that ever happen? The end zone in front of you and you think to leave the game to someone else to win? No. The end zone in front of you and you think about Trace McSorley? No.

Please give me one example of when it’s ever happened before. I’m not talking about taking a fullback dive to set up a field goal...I’m talking about a team that is trying to score and has the endzone wide open in front of them with a little over a minute to play. Not only does it not happen 80% of the time, it happens 0% of the time.

Happened last year in the NFL, I think 4 or 5 times. Eagles running back did it a couple of years ago. Slowed down and took the knee.

Examples please....and again, I’m not talking about diving to set up a better location for a FG. Show me a similar situation in both time left and distance to the endzone where a RB had a clear shot at the endzone on a play designed to gain as many yards as possible and he didn’t take it in.

App state joined the sun belt in 2014. Two years later they won it and are now two time defending sun belt champs. Probably gonna win it again this year. App State is a damn good team.
Absolutely! Well coached too!

Having been busy, how many 2nd and third stringers were in during the 4th?

Help me understand here - (and I agree with your points). If the coaches are confident they know Pitt's game plan, and especially in short yardage situations, then why will we see soft coverage on the outside? Guys playing 5-10 yards off the line of scrimmage is something that drives me nuts and I can't understand. Is it just a matter of coming up to make a play is easier than dropping back? What is the schematic logic when I see 3rd and 3 and corners sitting 7 yards deep off the line of scrimmage?

Brain Westbrook did vs the Giants ? broke away, slide down about the 2 or 3 Eagles ran the clock off. I dont recall if they were winning or losing, but if he had scored, the Giants would have had plenty of time to drive the field.

it was vs Dallas, here's the clip

I'll note that there was one case with the Eagles vs the Cowboys I recall--BUT, the Eagles were winning at the time. Not a tie game like ours.

Many things can go wrong with a field goal. Doesn't matter how close it is. If you can score a TD to take the lead, that's what you do. To think otherwise is asinine.

If the RB would have fallen on the 1 it would have bee. an all time smart maneuver.....I like their chances of essentially kicking an extra point more than giving Trace that much time to drive us down the field.
That being said, I can't imagine any running back in that situation ever doing that without input from the coach. And based upon where they were on the field, I doubt the coach had begun to think about it yet

In a tie game no running back would take a knee.

Last year, we hid OL weaknesses by relying on Saquon's agility, Trace's legs and superior WR/TE talent. Pitt was very effective with shovel passes and up middle runs in 2017. This year, straight up the gut. No BS! OL has to be a strength. Sanders and Slade are a formidable tandem with some room. Let power of Miles get it going and then hit them with speed of Slade. Control the ball and open up passing for Trace. Take pressure off D. Force Pickett to make plays and let lack of experience offer turnovers. If we let Pitt dominate us up front with run game, it will be a long, stressful night.

Several, maybe a half of a dozen, of those two star App St talents will be playing in the NFL someday. The QB threw and ran like he belongs there. The RB, Moore, looks like he belongs there. Two receivers, one DLineman and the corners looked promising. Evans, the backup RB and very fast return man, looks like he has the raw skills. App St has a lot of very good players regardless of how they were rated out of high school.

It will be a long stressful season if that happens. Can you imagine what Wisky and OSU will do if PSU has trouble with Pitt? That isn't a rip on Pitt, but they had a lot of questions marks on their Oline heading into this year and where viewed as a potential weakness. They still are a question mark after playing Albany who was overmatched as they are a FCS team (a medicore one at best). If PSU struggles Saturday on the dline it will be time to panic.
