Branding nonsense for Final 4

Watched the Fox special on the college playoff and two of the issues that really resonated with me was the notion of the BEST 4 teams versus the MOST DESERVING 4 teams and the notion of "branding" associated with the final 4. Clearly the discussions about BEST 4 teams had a strong Michigan slant. Most thought however that MOST DESERVING 4 teams should carry the day.

I actually thought that PSU gets a big push from branding given the fan base and the "story" of the PSU resurgence this year. If our Nits win the BIG, we are deserving and an argument could be made that our branding carries big weight. The PSU story sounds like it would be the central story of the playoffs.

It seemed pretty obvious to me that everyone was looking for an excuse to remove Washington given their lack of branding and their weakness in strength of schedule. If PSU smokes Wisc and Washington struggles in their game, could any scenario be made to jump BIG winner over Washington?

They went through a lot of scenarios and included the chaos scenario where both Clemson and Washington lose. There was some thought that OSU, Mich, and BIG winner could join Bama under the chaos scenario. There was also some debate that if PSU wins and Washington loses, could Mich be the 4th team with PSU looking in. The thought process was that UM beat BOTH the BIG title teams and that they are one of the 4 BEST teams and have great branding to boost interest.

If chalk holds, the final 4 will be Bama, OSU, Wash, and Clemson. If either Wash or Clemson loses, the 4th team sounds like it will be a BIG team. If chaos takes place, BIG could place 3 teams. It sounds like they did not support OK getting in under any scenario, same with OK St and Colorado.

The other interesting thing is that the final vote for NC was 5 votes Bama and 4 votes Clemson. So vote had Clemson beating OSU and it was pretty strong view that Clemson would beat OSU. The panel thought that they desperately want Saban v. Urban match up which I don't really understand. Who really cares if these guys coach against each other. They might not get it so curious if OSU gets dinged and pushed to 4 to ensure the Saban/Urban face off takes place even if in a semi game. This would then reward Wash and Clemson as 1 loss teams but with a conf championship to their credit.

In no way do I think Michigan should go to the playoffs, but I think Michigan would match up best with Alabama as far as the big teams go.
I think our ol and osu ol would get pummeled by the Alabama front four..:

I almost fell over when Brando stated (as if it was carved in stone, btw) that the committee will view ohio's brand as being it's physicality.

Say what???

We beat the crap out of them. Wisk punished them. Michigan pummeled them. A beaten up MSU beat them up. Indy more than held their own. They beat up a depleted and demoralized kNU (and how in hell is kNU a top 25 team in any real world?... more like 35) and okie dokie from the weenie 12... whoopee.

There was a time around week 6 that I thought osu was a formidable foe. Then I watched us beat the snot out of them (once we stopped being in awe of their rep, it was katie bar the door). Now? I'd happily play them anytime. Are they a really good team? I think so... but #2? GTFOH.

Hell, Michigan with an ailing QB and at the shoe beat them up.

So when I hear Brando spewing about osu's "brand" as being their physicality... well, osu has an awful lot to prove in the playoffs to be deserving of that title. In their favor, they can start healing NOW (and not after next week... how convenient for them). Maybe Urban can g et the prima donnas to actually show some balls.

IF we beat a very physical Wisky, I won't even have a question in my mind who belongs... and it ain't the bucks.

The bullshit of even mentioning MI what a joke. We beat the two teams that beat MI one by a landslide and no one is bringing that up. Once more, we got hammered by MI early on and with depleted roster while MI losses were in last few games while we pummeled team (Iowa) recently who beat MI recently. It's all a bunch of spin nonsense.

I'll admit that I'm biased here, but I honestly believe that IF we beat Wisconsin this weekend, we're BOTH one of the four most deserving teams, and one of the four best teams.

I'm not at all saying I think we would beat 'Bama, but I do think we're one of the better equipped teams to beat them. Like Michigan, we're solid-too-good across the board -- offense, defense, STs. Ohio State's offense sucks (relative to the other top teams), Clemson is a paper-tiger with a weak defense (depending on what VT team shows up, I think they can beat Clemson rather handedly). Tough for me to comment on Washington, as I only know what I've read about them -- haven't seen them live -- but it's at least hard for us to know what they have there considering their schedule.

I would love to see us play 'Bama actually. If we could weather the first half, it would be interesting to see how our second-half domination would play out against them.

Michigan is done. There won't even be a rose bowl for them.

I'm in agreement with dwiz and Ned2.
My personal unprofessional retired 6th grade math teacher opinion .....
UM's loss to os drops them to #5 in the CFP rankings. Wisky and PS stay at 6, 7.
Clemson to 3 and UW to 4.
Clemson loses and drops out.
UW wins and bounces to #3.
UM will take the #4 spot, B1G champion will go up to #5 and you can fill in the rest.
Argument will be that UM beat both Wisky and PS.

I can't agree more with the comment about UM losing 2 of the last three and will still be in the hunt. Other than ohowIhate and Alabama, that likely doesn't happen to anyone else.

Hope I'm wrong, but B1G will enjoy southern California for the Christmas Season.

I'm pretty sure they can't take 3 teams from the same conference. Not sure if it's a written rule or unwritten rule, but the media has said it enough that it must be true, albeit it was about the SEC 2 years ago.

You guys that think they'll take UM over the B1G champion -- especially if it's PSU -- are nuts. No. Freaking. Way.

UM is hoping they get picked for the Rose at this point.
