Brands Interview

Totally agree.

Don't get why so many on this board are so bitter. You guys have dominated the last 10 years of the sport. 2 years in second doesn't change that and everybody knows you'll be back, if not next year, the year after. It won't kill you to give your opponents a little credit.

Yeah, I don't think it's but maybe more than just a couple on here that you're referring to. But I was the first to wish you Congrats in the Saturday morning thread when it was official Iowa was this year's team champ. But then along comes Saturday night. And I'm sorry, but we blew Iowa out of the water. Yes, you get some credit. Iowa may have won the battle. But PSU clearly won the war!!

After watching brands Interview again without the bias of thinking he should be more outwardly happy, i concede I was a little harsh I think. I do however think there is an obvious difference between how these 2 handle questions (what is obviously the focus in their minds). here are both Interviews for you all to watch and enjoy:)

Who is bitter? The thread started as a comment about Brands being his usual weird self in an interview. The final sentence of your above post makes your reason for being here obvious. You want validation and compliments to make you feel good. OK. Iowa was awesome and was clearly the best team in the arena. Nobody else came close. Anyone watching the final round, hard core fans or casual observers, would have seen Iowa was head and shoulders above everyone else.

Feel better now??

The team with the 2nd place trophy won the war?

You got this flipped brother. PSU won one session. Iowa won the weekend. Lots to feel good about on both sides.

Certainly, Iowa won the big one...the team title.

That said, on prime time TV on the TV sports leader (ESPN), PSU had 4 finalists win national titles...including 2 over favored Hawkeyes.

PSU certainly received the most good publicity that's for darned sure. They didn't even focus on Spencer until after 10pm.

You tell me who won hearts and minds on Saturday night. (But, I think we all know.)

I’m not at all bitter, and agree with your statement.
Have never liked the idea of trying to get ahead by pulling someone else down. That goes for everyone of us., certainly including me.

Do you really think that happens to a healthy Lee? I can’t see him winning it now but Gilman wasn’t even his top competition.

Big question for me is does RBY make 57kg and go to the trials?

Lee is not healthy and it sounds as if he may really be healthy in the near future. Gilman is a world silver medalist. Fix,Gilman, and Nicky would be the three I think that could beat him. I'm thinking Gilman has adjusted many things specifically for Lee.

Ya, if he's wrestling with jacked up acls those 3 should all beat him. Healthy and none of them really stand a chance against him.

What would make you think that the NLWC coaches could help Gilman make adjustments???

I think back to the pressure he doesn't absorb well.... sort of like when he shot in against Seabass and Seabass basically pushed in with his hips and moved him back and gave up the TD (Bigtens 3 years ago). Need your knees for that to push off at different angles

Well that wasn't a new years celebration interview for sure.

What about Toms response to the comment about him bringing back his whole team next year? He said "uh I mean, there's a lot to be ironed out that's, it's that simple". WTF?

We know what Cael's response would be; something about how the whole team is greatful and fired up about next year. ....but Tom's response raises all kinds of questions. Considering 6 seniors coming back, Assad nipping at Brand's toes, Kennedy and other recruits, AD possibly having some sort of NCAA or Iowa hammer come down. Yikes, what a response to such an obvious softball upbeat question, it certainly seems in Tom's mind at the very least one will be gone, maybe more.

You do a good job of making something out of nothing. Its a real talent.

No...you nailed it the first time. When your coach is saying this night was a real eye opener for his kids and they have to become better from it, I'd say it's safe to say he wasnt all that outwardly happy...

Again, he had 2 undefeated 1 seeds get upset by guys they beat 2 weeks ago. He's heartbroken for them. Listen to every coach interview after their guy(s) lose in the finals. It's gut wrenching. Cael's the same way.

The Iowa coaches, wrestlers, and fans have been waiting a very long time to win a team championship. Not only have they been fighting for a decade to win one but PSU and Cael have been running roughshod over the entire NCCA for the last decade. Cael Sanderson and Penn State dethroned Iowa and have become the gold standard over the last decade. Make no mistake about this, Iowa did not only want to win a team championship but they wanted to stick it to PSU and Cael in the process. I know their fans feel this way.

The problem is that Cael and Penn State completely overshadowed Iowa winning the team championship by dominating Friday and Saturday night. It sure doesn't feel like PSU was runner up. I feel like this team won. I imagine that even by winning the team title that Iowa and their fans might feel like they are still playing second fiddle to Cael and PSU after what PSU did on Friday and Saturday night, racking up 4 individual championships with two of them coming at the expense of Iowa. PSU and Cael are still getting nothing but positive attention and praise for what they did over the weekend. It seems like people are still paying more attention to PSU despite Iowa winning the team title.

I know that the Iowa program and fans are over the moon about winning the team title, but I believe there will always be a hole this year because they certainly did not stick it to Cael and PSU like they wanted to.
They won the title, but the ESPN storyline was "HOW ABOUT THOSE LIONS".

A friend of mine who used to wrestle, including being a room guy at Penn State, but only kind of follows anymore ask me Sunday if Penn State and Iowa are the only teams competing for the championship anymore.
I smiled as I told him Iowa won the team championship last night and were runners-up in 2015, but other than that no Iowa hasn't competed for a championship in 11 years. Penn State competes every year except 2015 and other years have seen both OSUs compete, Cornell and Minnesota, but no - not Iowa.

I finally got around to listening to Tom Brands interview, and my general impression is that he can think quickly on his feet and provide reasonably articulate answers. You might not agree with everything he said or think he should have put more emphasis on certain things, but it isn't easy to give a completely unrehersed response to spontaneous questions, especially when your adrenaline is still a little elevated. I think he handles himself pretty well in those situations and you can bet that he leaves a favorable impression on the people who hold the purse strings at Iowa.
