Wasn't he on Van Gundy's staff with the Knicks at some point? I could have sworm I saw him on the sideline at some point as an assistant?Does he have any experience at all? Per ESPN.

Has been an NBA assistant for many years. Pretty good friends with Larry Bird, which is at least annecdotal evidence he does not hold the same racial views as the Thompsons.
It's the best possible hire, I think. (I'm a longtime Hoya fan, since before Ewing.) If it doesn't work, I don't know what will, other than a new on-campus arena.Good hire
I once went to a Georgetown/Pitt game at Pitt, when Ewing played. The Pitt fans chanted "Ugly!", whenever Ewing touched the ball. Typical Pitt classlessness!Does he have any experience at all? Per ESPN.
I don't think I've ever seen an athlete shatter stereotypes and perception more than Ewing. He was considered a marginal student, with very limited public speaking ability. He was ridiculed in his first season in BE. Thompson was very protective of his players and restricted access for interviews etc. Later as a Knick, Ewing was very personable and articulate. Glad to hear the stories that he was a diligent student. 17 years as an NBA assistant shows a strong will and determination. Best of luck! He's been an NBA assistant for 15 years.
We'll see how this works out. One thing: his players will go to class. Ewing was famous for never cutting a class during his time at Georgetown. JT II once mentioned that every time he had a meeting with Ewing, Ewing was waiting for him at the appointed time, was never late.
I don't know how the X and Os are going to play out, but I'm glad that Hoya fans have seen the last of the triangle.
Ewing was like option 10 in the coaching candidate search. And only because he's Patrick Ewing was he even that high on the list.
Really? That's news to me; I'm typing this in DC. JT III was fired two Thursdays ago, it's the second Monday since he was let go. His is the only name I've heard being bandied about and I understand part of the holdup was that he is very close to the Thompson family and there was some reluctance on his part to accept the job because he didn't want to go against JT II's wishes.Ewing was like option 10 in the coaching candidate search. He WAS a marginal student, but he loved being a college student and put everything he had into that. When his Georgetown classmates lose a parent, he's on the phone with them giving his condolences. I really can't do this justice.I don't think I've ever seen an athlete shatter stereotypes and perception more than Ewing. Thanks. I guess I was maybe hiding. EDIT: Yes, I do now recall Smart, Brey, and Anmaker being considered as possibilities.Article on their struggle to find a new coach. It lists five guys who weren't interested. Surely there were others.

Hmm, maybe john amechi will coach at Penn State one day.
A friend of mine tutored Ewing when she was a grad student at Georgetown. She liked him, thought he wanted to do well, but she couldn't understand how he ever got accepted to Georgetown.
I expect Pat is going to do very well. I was hoping Georgetown would go for Dukie Amaker, who pretty much sucked at his two major college stops. It's the best possible hire, I think. Don't think having two gay people in position of power in Penn State sports would sit well with the bigots. I'm sure Sandy gets more criticism because of what people assume about her, and James Franklin got more before last season, because he is black. I once heard someone call Wally Richardson the N word when he as having a bad game.Hmm, maybe john amechi will coach at Penn State one day.

If she couldn't understand how Ewing got accepted there, I doubt her merits for being accepted at Georgetown... it should be pretty plain to see, like 7 feet worth of reasons.

Actually you sound more like a judgmental bigot than the people you are calling bigots....Don't think having two gay people in position of power in Penn State sports would sit well with the bigots. Yeah, I thought the Thompson connection might work against Ewing getting this job. When the school parted ways with John Thompson III, I figured they would try to make a break with the Thompson coaching tree.Really? That's news to me; I'm typing this in DC. I think Ameechi is reviled because he spoke out against Penn State relative to the Sandusky scandal and I'm not aware of his backing down. I don't think his being white or or gay has much to do with it.
Uh, Amaechi is white now?
