Does he have any experience at all? Per ESPN.

He's been an NBA assistant for 15 years.

We'll see how this works out. One thing: his players will go to class. Ewing was famous for never cutting a class during his time at Georgetown. JT II once mentioned that every time he had a meeting with Ewing, Ewing was waiting for him at the appointed time, was never late.

I don't know how the X and Os are going to play out, but I'm glad that Hoya fans have seen the last of the triangle.

As a 76ers fan, I never was a fan of Ewing - but the S.O.B. could play basketball! I think this is a solid by Georgetown. He is going to have to prove that he can recruit, and coach in game. Going to be interesting because I'm not sure how well known he is amongst the HS players today - it has been a long time since he played.

I don't think I've ever seen an athlete shatter stereotypes and perception more than Ewing. He was considered a marginal student, with very limited public speaking ability. He was ridiculed in his first season in BE. Thompson was very protective of his players and restricted access for interviews etc. Later as a Knick, Ewing was very personable and articulate. Glad to hear the stories that he was a diligent student. 17 years as an NBA assistant shows a strong will and determination. Best of luck!

Ewing was like option 10 in the coaching candidate search. And only because he's Patrick Ewing was he even that high on the list.

Really? That's news to me; I'm typing this in DC. JT III was fired two Thursdays ago, it's the second Monday since he was let go. His is the only name I've heard being bandied about and I understand part of the holdup was that he is very close to the Thompson family and there was some reluctance on his part to accept the job because he didn't want to go against JT II's wishes.

He WAS a marginal student, but he loved being a college student and put everything he had into that. When his Georgetown classmates lose a parent, he's on the phone with them giving his condolences. I really can't do this justice.

A friend of mine tutored Ewing when she was a grad student at Georgetown. She liked him, thought he wanted to do well, but she couldn't understand how he ever got accepted to Georgetown.

No, but Joe Crispin is now the head coach at Rowan and Danny Earl is head coach at VMI... with the way some Penn State fans have a penchant for having former Penn State players return as coaches, maybe they will end up in State College.

If she couldn't understand how Ewing got accepted there, I doubt her merits for being accepted at Georgetown... it should be pretty plain to see, like 7 feet worth of reasons.

It's the best possible hire, I think. (I'm a longtime Hoya fan, since before Ewing.) If it doesn't work, I don't know what will, other than a new on-campus arena.
I expect Pat is going to do very well. I was hoping Georgetown would go for Dukie Amaker, who pretty much sucked at his two major college stops.

Don't think having two gay people in position of power in Penn State sports would sit well with the bigots. I'm sure Sandy gets more criticism because of what people assume about her, and James Franklin got more before last season, because he is black. I once heard someone call Wally Richardson the N word when he as having a bad game.

Nice slam at the fans.

People would hate Amechi not because he's gay. They'd hate him because he's a douchebag.

How about them apples, huh?

He's gay? Who cares? I don't know that I've ever seen a person more full of himself. Just visit his 'business' website for proof (I think the idea is you pay him for his big ideas and thoughts - LOL). And bonus points if you can find any mention of Penn State in John's bio....

She didn't follow sports and this was her first look at how things work in the world of big time college athletics. She soon got the picture.

While, I attribute some of the criticism of Sandy to her being gay, and I think some gave Franklin a short leash because he was black, I think Ameechi is reviled because he spoke out against Penn State relative to the Sandusky scandal and I'm not aware of his backing down. I don't think his being black or gay has much to do with it.

I personally think that he has the right to his opinion and I'd take him over JZ any day of the week as a representative of Penn State (not that I'm in a position to do so).

Actually you sound more like a judgmental bigot than the people you are calling bigots....

Yeah, I thought the Thompson connection might work against Ewing getting this job. When the school parted ways with John Thompson III, I figured they would try to make a break with the Thompson coaching tree.

Ewing certainly still has a name in basketball circles; can he recruit well? and will he want to do the legwork that good recruiters do?

Smart, Brey, and Mack !?! Come on. Ammaker would be a possibility. Cooley, another that why would he make that move. So 1 out of 5 real possibilities and the search is a debacle? The writer is delusional, no way Georgetown thought they could get a Mack, Brey, or Smart.

[QUOTE="Ranger Dan, post: 2734333, member: 3512"I think Ameechi is reviled because he spoke out against Penn State relative to the Sandusky scandal and I'm not aware of his backing down. I don't think his being white or or gay has much to do with it.

Uh, Amaechi is white now?

It's not for us to decide what color amechi is. He is the color he identifies with.

That's true. Mariah Carey says she is black, which was news to me. Whatever.
