btn at 8:30 p.m. EDT tonight (9/16/21): 1996 Outback Bowl, Penn State vs. auburn

I watched that holed up in a bar in Steamboat Springs. Cracked a bone in my elbow and had to drown my sorrows as I watched storms dump 10” of fresh powder AFTER my tumble caused by hitting an icy rut on a traverse

The only bet I’ve ever made with a bookie was on this game. I had no doubt Penn State had this one.

Enjoyable time trip. Things I’ve forgotten since then

1. McQueary sucked, even back then
2. PSU’s roster was so deep. Even the 3rd stringers were better than AU’s starters
3. Enis was just figuring out how to be an effective RB
4. 10 players off that team were selected in the 1996 NFL draft
Ten Nittany Lions were drafted in the 1996 NFL Draft.

*) I hope Father Nix passed down his QB skills to his son. ;)

Hmmm… maybe? I’m remembering some very rainy and muddy bowl game where one of our receivers caught a pass, landed on his back, and slid about 10 yards further, hydroplaning in the muck.
remember it well. we were on a charter with center for travel. had all our bags, etc.in the bus as were going right from the stadium to the airport. it poured all game. got back to the bus, pulled off my socks and rang the out and put them back on. got to the airport, and the charter was late. had to sit in the hallway and wait. a group of us found a bar an watched whatever bowl game that was on. i'm at the bar behind to pretzel warmer. bt comes over to get the last pretzel hanging there. said to him, i'll give you $20 if you hang my socks in there. after a good laugh, he says no , but the next beer is on me. outside of the game, open bar on the flight home was a major highlight. one of the better trips we've been on :).

It’s a shame, but the responsibility for Penn State’s legacy of Success with Honor now lies with all of us.

When I think of this game the first image I have is of Jurevicius's catch. We do well in mud. Ask LSU.

I remember that day because it was the last time I received a speeding ticket. New Year's morning and we had 4 Lions and 2 Tigers in the car packed w/ beer and liquor - some of it opened and in hand. Cop understood where we were heading said he even understood the open containers because we all looked hungover. Did get a ticket for 78 in a 65 though.

We were bitching about our tickets (from the athletic department) because they were in the last row under the press box. We went to a local mall for some rain gear and really didn't need it. The press box actually kept us pretty dry the entire time.

One-hour condensed broadcast.

All I will say is that that team would have physically kicked the living sh!t out of most of these soft pass and catch teams you see out there today. Of course that kind of punishing physicality is no longer allowed.

We played some BIG BOY football back then. Watching a game like that makes you realize how soft the game has gotten. Really miss those days.

This!

One reason I enjoyed the recent Ark-Ut game (besides UT losing) was because Ark was ready for a fight and UT wasn’t ready for it.

I watched the game and got a kick out of a first half injury report that went something like this "bad news. so and so is out of the game with a concussion. the trainers are evaluating him in the locker room. they hope to have him back in the second half". Things you won't hear today.
