Buck nuts take another hit..

Schriever was right there with Mendez in freestyle. He's also not that old since he was still junior eligible. Iowa is definitely still all in on Mendez but adding both him and Bouzy didn't make much sense there and Willie said something of that sort in his mailbag.

Ybarra also was a blue chipper, he had a subpar juniors but nothing to worry about.

Anyone care to project who the front runner is for Mendez now?

Gun to my head, I think he ends up at Iowa. Corby and Willie speculated he probably thinks he'll be 141 to start his career but he almost certainly will be 141 at some point, he's pretty long. Bartlett and SVN look like they could be career 141/149s here. Now Willie/Corby said it best, it's not likely Mendez is the type of kid who thinks "Oh man, I can't beat that guy" but at the same time, it's not something he'll totally ignore.

Now who knows what Cael is telling him? Maybe Cael sees Beau and SVN moving up (Mendez can start as a 133, he is still wrestling 61KG after all and has been around that weight for a while). I think it's been said International aspirations mean a lot to Mendez and the training center matters a lot so obviously we're in the front of the pack there. Having RBY, Lee, SVN, Bartlett, Zain as his training partners for his career?

I recognize and understand how we all like to speculate, including Wilie and Corby, what weight Beau, SNV or Mendez will wrestle, but the truth is none of us really know. Cael has a better idea and that's why Mendez is being recruited. He is trying to put the best team on the mat. We will see what happens. I hope Jesse Mendez becomes a Nittany Lion. I'm sure he will find a spot on the team, whatever weight that is.

You're 100% right. I mean the kid still visited for a reason, he's obviously very interested in Penn State and a kid with his goals (in college and freestyle) would be. I think he's well aware what our room looks like.

About 90% right. Not convinced Cael cares what Mendez's weight will be.

Is being “right with” a high school kid who hasn’t even started their senior year a good thing?

That's a fair statement. I made a mistake, I thought Schriever wrestled Mendez at Juniors (AKA he just entered college) but it was U23s and now I think he might be a decent bit older actually. But yes, that's a good point.

This is a big miss for PSU, but you literally can’t get EVERY guy you want. On the bright side, at least we can look forward to four years of “why didn’t Cael recruit Bouzakis harder?” posts! 😉
Cael is human, PSU isn't perfect for everyone, and kids obviously wanna wrestle elsewhere for other coaches and schools, even after being recruited by Cael and PSU. It may seem tough to fathom for some, but it is what it is.

Perhaps PSU was initially the top preference for Nic, but Aruba Tom was offering more $.

Bo Jordan and Daton Fix were both overall #1 and therefore bigger misses ...

And yet ...

Great point.
Penn State isn't serious enough. Bo Jordan zero titles.
My dad has my juice. Daton Fix zero titles.
While Sammy is pretty darn good, no titles yet.
Maybe Bouzakis turns out to be the different guy, but going someplace other than PSU is leaving titles on the shelf.

Good luck to him. I don’t see his level of success translating to the next level. He will be very good for sure. But not elite IMO

I view him a lot like I viewed Marsteller coming out of HS

The who!e Greco focus might prevent him from being elite. There are not many Greco focused guys who were elite in college. Coon is one of the few recent ones.

Yup - I think that's what caused Mason to plateau at PSU. Think a lot of people forgot how heralded he was coming to PSU, he'll never break the starting lineup (though he has 3 more years to try lol)

Pletcher was a kid we definitely should have taken in hindsight. I obviously don't know how his recruitment went but I'm guessing Cael offered him no money whereas Ohio State might have offered him a full (or at least a decent size) scholarship since he was a Top 10 PFP guy. I know it's been said his win 3-2 style probably was why Cael didn't push for him but I think he definitely had a spot in our lineup all 4 years and could have helped in the 2020/2021 team race a ton and we'd have him next year if he redshirted 2017 like he should have.

Pletcher wouldn't have shirted, so he wouldn't have been around to help in 2021.

- HS 2016
- PSU DNQ 133 in both 2017 and 2018.
- 2019 he and RBY were both 133, Nick 141, Brady 149. Most likely true freshman RBY would've shirted.
- 2020 most likely he or (more likely) Nick would've bumped to 149 vs Verk.

He almost missed with Van Ness, but refused to take no for an answer 😁

Home run hitters strike out more than singles hitters.

Cael has had a lot of big misses. It's been terrific for PSU, much less good for Iowa and Ohio State, and terrible for Cornell and the Pokes and Goofers.

Given all of the uncertainties that exist today, combined with the transfer portal, it's probably more like a check swing rather than a swing and miss. Who knows what happens as things evolve.

i'm sure cael would tell you guys he's swung and missed on plenty of recruits. nobody wins them all. i've got one in mind i'm sure he would have loved manning 125 the last 4 years.

Yup. There might be more at bats before the game is over.

We do know this: Cael doesn't get called out looking. His misses are not omissions.

I'm too lazy to do this again, but have previously compiled a list of Cael's misses -- guys we know he has pursued. It can probably be found on a board search.

Of course our favorite miss was Gwiz.
