Whats everyone’s thoughts on the Chael Sonnen/Jordan Burroughs beef?

If you don’t know. Here’s what’s transpired.

1. JB goes on a MMA show and says he’d like to have 1 MMA fight just to see how he can do. Says it’s not about the money, just wants to “throw hands” one time and see how he does
2. CS tweets at JB and offers him $50k for MMA fight
3. JB tweets back to add a 0 to that number and then call him. Says he’s made more money than than for a wrestling match
4. CS is insulted and goes on a rant of how JB never made more than $50k for a wrestling match.

Here’s the latest video from CS who basically says JB a charity case..lol

It’s fascinating to me. I like both guys. I think JB was being a little cocky and Sonnen the wrong dude to be cocky to.

The thing is. Chael is not wrong in the video above. Until wrestling can actually generate money and have a bigger audience they can’t expect big payoffs. Tickets need to be sold.

The only wrestling event that creates a huge audience is NCAAs

This is just what Chael does, right? Makes things a spectacle while talking as much sh*t as possible at any perceived (or invented) slight?

JB is a professional athlete at the top of his sport. To get him to try another sport - one that could potentially threaten his "normal" livelihood through injury and would require lots and lots of additional training - is probably going to take more than $50K.

I agree with you to a point. Why risk injury when your at the top of your game in wrestling?

That being said, JB is the one that mentioned he wanted 1 fight. Not CS.

As my divorce attorney says...when you roll around with hogs in the pig pen, the hogs end up happy and you end up covered in sh!t.

I believe that the Living the Dream's payouts between an Olympic gold and an Olympic silver is definitely greater than $50,000, so JB is being accurate when he says that he has made more money than that for a wrestling match - albeit, it was for a "win" in that one match.

JB is one of the most famous wrestlers in the world. If he were to participate in an MMA fight, there would be huge spotlight on it within the world wrestling community. Since wrestlers are arguably the greatest athletes transitioning into the sport of MMA, JB would be a draw with a much higher impact to the sport overall than $50k. In fact, $500k may be underselling himself a bit.

I wish I could care about MMA, but mostly I resent it for taking guys like Askren and Ruth away from my favorite sport.

I recognize the economics don’t usually agree with me, and I don’t begrudge those guys for their decision, but it’s just not my thing as a fan.

JB made $250k from his Olympic win.

Chael breaks that down over 4 yrs and says it’s not one match. In addition Chael contributes to the living the dream fund. He calls that charity, not money earned. In other words Chael saying all the money JB has gotten from wrestling was charity. Not money earned as if he brought in thousands of people and got a piece of the gate

As a purely economic argument, Chael's probably not wrong (although he doesn't know for sure).

But all the condescension in his comments towards wrestling kind of eliminates the possibility of me taking "his side" here. I understand JB not being interested in signing up for a fight right now for $50K. I do not understand Chael taking offense to JB saying as such and deciding to, more or less, insult wrestling in general in response.

But again, this is what Chael does.

My thoughts? They're both right.

Chael is offering probably the going rate. Don't blame him. Jordan is turning it down because it's not really an optimal use of his time. Don't blame him.

As I said in the FB thread on it on Flo's FB page, if the best rugby player, who made a million a year in New Zealand, said he wanted to try American football, he could. But he'd get a rookie offer for about 1/3 his salary. I don't blame the team who'd offer him that. And I wouldn't blame him for saying no thanks. And it could still not be about the money and have him say no because of money. That little is just not worth the time to him.

Not a fan of CS , he's a hot bag of air. The problem I have is JB saying ints not about money , then saying I want 450k more.

I can see what you're saying and agree to an extent. At the same time I'm a teacher and it's really not about the money (summers are nice). But there is a level down where it is about the money. There is a minimum level of amount that is low enough where you feel like you're being low-balled that it becomes insulting. And Chael knew that and he knew it would sound like a lot, and that Jordan would turn it down. Chael also knew it would give him a chance to get on his "wrestling is a joke" pulpit.
