Wrestling Cael Sanderson to visit 2x AA

@Richard Schnyderite Just reported on the premium board that Cael is expected to go visit 2-time All-American Chris Cannon.

Cannon, of course, entered the transfer portal from Northwestern last week. He’s got 2 years of eligibility remaining and would be a perfect fit for PSU at 133.
Sweet. This is the one transfer I wanted I thought had a legitimate chance. Fingers crossed.

The reason these guys are transferring, is due to NU grad school. It is highly competitive. I guess the wrestling nerds aren’t quite nerdy enough to be accepted onto their post grad program.

As an example of this, my cousin, who is a Duke graduate, worked as an engineer for 6 years for GE in their turbofan division before applying to MBA schools. He got in to Booth (University of Chicago), but was waitlisted at Kellogg (NU).

I've seen lots of people get into Harvard and not Penn or Yale. I stopped trying to figure out how all that works. From my talks with kids applying, it seemed like Stanford was always the hardest, people's first choice with Harvard 2.

I feel if Cael gets in a plane to go visit you, there is better than an 83% chance you will be our 133 next year.
Basically true...if Cael himself is coming to see you...you are very close to being a Penn State lock.

To be guaranteed a slot in the most prestigious schools you need to check a diverse set of boxes. I check virtually none of them.

This ^^^^^ Have a nephew and nephew in law (married my niece) both have same GPA to the 4th decimal point. 2 points difference in the MCAT scores. Similar hours of volunteering and such. Basically identical candidates. Both applied to med schools. One got 2 interviews and took an offer at a pay to play school. The other got offers at every school applied for and some offers from schools he didn't apply to. One school he didn't apply to gave him tuition and a living allowance stipend to attend medical school. Any guesses on the difference? Hint: Goggles mentioned it above. (Not to say both aren't highly qualified and will be excellent docs in the future.)

“Affirmative action” (in one sense of the term or another) is very rampant in the medical school application process.

If you are an underrepresented minority, and have reasonably decent scores, schools will beat down your door to have you.

As a corollary to this, and I tread lightly by mentioning this, but the AAMC data clearly shows that the average scores (GPAs and MCAT) of successful applicants are SIGNIFICANTLY lower among URMs than among Caucasian and Asian applicants.

And this isn’t some new woke philosophy. It was quite the same when I applied almost 20 years ago.

Edit: <scrolls up, looks at thread title, confused as to how I even got to this point. Sorry for continuing to derail>
