They signed this scum bag Mike Vick.

Its going to be funny to hear all the Steelers fans who cried for him to thrown out of football change their tune cause he is a Steeler.

Name those Steelers fans you're referencing. I'm a Steelers fan and I said Vick deserved another shot after showing genuine remorse and paying a hefty price.

Regardless of that, I'm not particularly interested in him as a Steeler because he's not any good anymore.

Wonder if those poor dogs think he should get a chance?

They have had a serial rapist playing QB for them for the last decade and it didn't bother the fans as long as he won football games. Is it really worse now that they have a guy who killed dogs as their backup?

It is no wonder people will not give Penn State a fair shake in our lifetimes. Look at how Penn State fans react to teams that they don't like. Is Ben really a serial rapist? Then I guess Paterno engineered the cover up of child molestation for years too. The same logic is applied. Accusation = proof if you root against that team. No need to further dig into the issue and base judgment on facts. This is why Penn State will always be Ped U no matter if the truth is exposed or not. There are people that badly want us to be Ped U and no amount proof to the contrary will sway them.

So for the rest of his life he shouldn't be allowed to earn a living in his chosen profession? I guess he should just go on welfare and live off the taxpayers.

He'll never see the field anyway, at least not at QB.

I'm a Steelers fan that's lived in the Philly area for the past 20 years. Vick paid his dues and kept his nose clean while an Eagle. He also handled himself pretty well with the fans and media.

I'm hoping he never has to see the field, but I'm OK with this signing.

Wait, they have??!! Oh my God, please provide me links to all the indictments, I can't believed I missed this!

"Can't root for the Steelers" ??

What NFL team can you root for?

If you no longer want to root for the Steelers, then don't. Why do you have to make an announcement? Are the Rooney's going to issue a press release that PennStateNate will no longer be rooting for them?

Who cares? Don't watch them. Don't root for them. The Rooney's couldn't care any less and neither do any Steelers fans.

I was initially totally against Vick being allowed back and crushed me when my lifelong favorite team the Eagles signed him. But overtime the remorse he showed on top of a probably the biggest penalty anyone paid both in jail and financially allowed me to think he should be allowed back to play he paid his debt to society. He actively went out and campaigned against cruelty to animals and kept his nose clean and was pretty much a model citizen. So to me he should be allowed to earn a living and go on with his life.

Art Rooney and Chuck Noll had personal standards that the Steelers had to meet. When Cowher became coach and Art Rooney passed the standards were eliminated. Now it is win at all costs. As best I can tell the Steelers are now a gang of illiterate thugs. They remind me of Pitt under Majors and Sherrill. I no longer have any interest in the Steelers.

Judging from the reaction of facebook friends and people in the office here in western PA, this was a massive PR blunder by the Steelers, the likes of which we have never seen.

Really? How do you explain Ernie Holmes and the fact that the Steeler Offensive linemen of the 70's were some of the worse steroid abusers of their era?

Is it genuine when his remorse is for the most part, imposed by the court?

"In March 1973 Holmes, who was later diagnosed as suffering from acute paranoid psychosis, allegedly pulled a shotgun from his truck while driving on the Ohio turnpike and began shooting out the tires of passing trucks. This led to a high-speed chase, a shootout and a standoff with state police that ended in a nearby forest with Holmes allegedly shooting an officer in the ankle.

"Two days later, a lawyer paid for by the Rooneys bailed Holmes out of jail using $45,000 supplied by the Rooneys. He was then taken to a psychiatric hospital (also paid for by the Rooneys) where he stayed for two months. When he got out, Holmes pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and, somehow, was given five years probation. (Just trying to imagine how something like this would play out in 2011 is mind-blowing, isn't it?) A few months later, though, Holmes was back at training camp and in the starting lineup, where he helped the Steelers win their first two Super Bowls.

"Art Rooney Jr. said Holmes needed "mercy."

You were saying? I'm always a fan of some 'good-ole days' revisionist history.

Is it genuine when his remorse is for the most part, imposed by the court?

Well he was at countless places speaking out against dog fighting and animal abuse and many of these I believe were not court imposed. Many players said he was in studying film before most everyone every day and was a model citizen. Even after he left I expected to hear some murmur's about him and there was nothing other than he was really focused on football and his kids. Everyone has their own opinion and I am not telling people how they should think just my own opinion and I get people that will never forgive him for what he did. I initially thought the same thing, but he turned me around when numerous people with integrity said he truly has changed.

Life long Steeler fan and this is not how the Steelers operate. Makes me kind of sick

I'm thinking that those who are insisting they won't root for the Steelers after signing Vick are the same ones who insisted they were done with the board after losing thread view...and here they still are.

Vick is sub-human scum. If the Giants ever signed him, I would be furious. Those dogs will never get a second chance. I'm surprised an organization like the Steelers would bring him in.

Or you can assume the people with whom you disagree have the ability to discern the facts of different situations for themselves. It is true Ben was not convicted, just like Ray Ray was not. Ben's people wiped the crime scene clean. Ray Ray's people refused to testify against him. Ask the next Steelers' fan you meet if they think Ray Lewis was guilty. Still have not met one who does not. Still have yet to meet one Steelers' fan who believes Ben was guilty. The only distinction the average fan make is what uniform the player is wearing. The idea that any team in the NFL "does things different" is laughable.

Ray Lewis pled guilty....I'm just taking his word for it. Ray Rice has a video of the abuse.

Where is the proof or charges against Ben again?

OJ Simpson did not murder his ex-wife. A jury of his peers said so. Forget the facts of the case.

Life long Steeler fan and I can assure you my tune hasn't changed. He served his time so at what point is he allowed to hold a job......which happens to be pretty good paying. What more do you want from the guy?

Maybe its me but I think the bigger picture is completely over looked. He's not very good and has a history of getting injured.
Although he's probably better than Landry Jones but then thats not saying much.
Lets just hope Ben stays healthy.
There had to have been better options than Micheal Vick.

As best you can tell.......

That's a revelation.

If you meet some of the Steelers, go ahead and tell them.

I'll root for the Steelers again when Roethlisberger is no longer their QB.

What he did was awful, but it was also all he knew. He showed that he genuinely recognized it was wrong and atoned for it. Should we have jailed him for life instead? What was the appropriate justice? Perpetual unemployment? Who benefits from that? Not the dogs. Not society. Not Vick. Nobody.

Agree with your post, wb, except that the "awfully arrogant" part was a tad harsh.

Who is saying he has to be "perpetually unemployed"? He went to Va Tech, surely he can ask to supersize an order or re-shingle roofs. As consumers, we are all free to choose who we do business with and it is certainly acceptable to use a criteria that includes who they hire or who they won't bake a wedding cake for.

And what sick, perverted culture tortures animals to death? Isn't that like saying society caused Ted Bundy to kill people?

I personally never cared one way or the other about Vick, but starting to feel like rooting for the guy because of all the backlash. If he beat his wife or raped women he would get a pass, but because he hurt animals he is forever a pariah. The NFL is filled with unsavory serial abusers and nobody cares. Hey its a free country, root for the teams and players you like and respect, I get it. But I smell a double standard and therefore if he really has turned himself around I hope he succeeds.

Edit: In no way am I condoning animal abuse, for me its more about redemption. A guy gets out of prison after paying the price, if he's cleaned up what more do we as a society require?

I think what gets people so upset about animal abuse is that the animal is stuck. The dog with a 3/8" chain around its neck can do nothing to prevent the abuse. These animals were tortured and killed in horrible fashion. It takes a different mentality to drown something.
