Cassar out for the year

Yep, and Nevills had to not get majored if I recall correctly and his success in the match was a big deal in it's own right.
I was just referring to Snyder's tweet or quote or whatever before the match that "he's coming and he's bringing hell with him". Hell turned out to be Cassar beating Moore in the overall scheme of things. Of course, to the sideline add board, hell was Nato's lower body.

Thank you to both athletes. I wish them both the best of luck in their futures, and will continue to follow them in wrestling-centric or combat sport manners.

AND IF YOU'RE ONE OF THOSE NANCIES WHO THINKS THAT WE'RE "OUT OF THE RACE" NOW WITH NEVILLS AND RASHEED IN/BACK IN THE LINEUP, YOU BETTER CHANGE YOUR DAMN TUNE OR PLAY YOUR INSTRUMENT SOMEWHERE ELSE. THIS TEAM CAN STILL ****ING WIN THE SHIP IN MARCH.

Iowa is extremely tough, but I'll be damned if I'm not gonna double my optimism and spirit in the face of adversity. I don't really watch other sports. This is the only team that I tie both my self-worth and happiness to their results. I don't like giving others the power to bring me joy or despair, especially when I have no control or personal tie to them, but this is my only fandom. This season is still going to be extremely fun.

WE ARE.

I like the way you think.

If Intermat rankings were the final seeds at nationals, we would have 5 wrestlers favored to reach the semis, Brooks would be 1 upset away from the same, and Rasheed isn't even in the rankings yet.

Iowa could also have 7 or 8, but as we all know, we don't lose in the semis.:)

"I saw the news today, oh boy . . . "

I suspected Anthony was done for the season. I think he knew it right away. Elbow on his knee, hand to his head. You could just hear him thinking "Can you believe this &*&$% ? What a great comeback story. Great NCAA run. The draw he got didn't phase him at all. OK, Gable in the semi's, then Derek in the finals. Let's do it. Thanks Anthony!

OK, I'm kinda new to this forum. What is HR? I've browsed Eleven Warriors & Black Heart Gold Pants on occasion. But, just don't know the "HR" reference.

FYI, I live in Texas. But, I got to see the NCAA in Oklahoma City when Gwiz put away Tony Nelson, and the PSU section cheered: "NC State! NC State! NC State!" Loved Gwiz ever since. And, I was in Cleveland when Conel pinned Moore, then just to prove that wasn't a fluke, beat Moore a 2nd time. Thanks Kyle! I also got to see Myles Martin crush our dreams . . . and just a moment later Bo with the pin! Still my favorite t-shirt (and I have one for each of the 8 championships) was right after Cael was hired. "Penn State Wrestling" and underneath "Cael to the Lions!" And, oh yeah, I also got to see PSU vs OK St in the Dual Championships. Great, great match. And, a great wrestling arena, and the Cowboy fans were ALL terrific to me and my friend. Two blue shirts in a sea of orange. So, even though I just discovered this forum, I just want to make it clear . .. I am not a troll!!!

One more . . . I also saw John Fritz win his NCAA Championship at the Jadwin Gym in 1975!

Obviously I'm sorry for Cassar and share everyone's thoughts about what sort of teammate and champion he's been. That said, I also agree that we're still very much in the title race. The question becomes, does the trio of Brooks, Rasheed and Nevills outscore the trio of Rasheed, Konel and Cassar at nationals or do they make PSU a stronger dual meet team? Honestly, I think it's at least a push and I think you might make the argument that the new lineup scores more in a tournament than the old one does, at least if Nevills lives up to expectations (which to me are top 6). I'm also apparently in the minority who thinks that Rasheed may do as well or better at 197 as he would have at 184. I guess we're going to find out. Hopefully 125 and 149 are also great weights for PSU as we get closer to nationals.

Yes. He even revealed "the plan".

“It’s going to be hit and miss a little bit,” Sanderson said, about when Berge will return to the lineup full time. “We just want to do what’s in his best interest. Our plan is, we’re trying to get ready for March.”

Feel SO bad for Anthony. What a magical run last season and I feel so privileged to have watched him win the title in Pittsburgh. Chatted with him briefly at the after-party; what a gracious young man and his smile that night lit up the entire room.
Best of luck to him as he tries to make the Olympics.

I'm not sure how he can make the Olympics. The Olympic Team Trials are only 2 weeks after NCAAs and he isn't even qualified for the Trials yet.

interesting he mentions Berge still feeling affects from U23. I figured he was fine by now. If he only going to wrestle once this weekend please let it be against Deaken and not the other way around. He needs to get matches in and would be nice to see how he stacks up at the weight

Berge still feeling the effects from U23 is very concerning.

IME this is not surprising.

Went through this with my guy last year and he was still not feeling 100% himself in early January after a November head injury - even with normal progression in the concussion testing. Once he got back on the mat practicing and competing when cleared, I don't know that he got confident and non-hesitant about it until at least a month later. Everyone reacts differently, but it is quite possible that this is where Berge is right now. If so, I wouldn't expect him to look great. My guy, first match back, was against a tough West Point kid who demolished him. Next few bouts were better, but still not great. A little over a month later, he handled the same cadet fairly easily at EIWAs.

These things take quite a bit of time and have their ups and downs. It should be no issue for him to wrestle a light schedule and still be in great shape for March.

Being old school I was always kind of ignorant about concussion effects. Until last year. Seeing someone deal with it day after day, educates you very fast.

I played football thru college late 80s and early90s and just thought they were headaches. Took some Advil and played thru.

Different world today. A lot more knowledge out there about the subject. Better for the long term health of the atheletes.

You would think PHYSICALLY he should be fine, this very well could be a mental/ confidence thing, after all he was knocked cold attempting a shot, correct? I hope this isnt the case, but if it is, IDT putting him against Deakin would be best right now.

Says in the cdt he opted out of surgery, and is focusing on strengthening the shoulder for the last chance qualifier.

IMHO Cael, etal are just being cautious. Berge looked pretty good 5 weeks ago beating #9 Humphreys in the Lehigh dual.

Not necessarily. See Dice's post above. Also, concussion recoveries aren't linear, and it's possible he knocked heads in practice and they're being prudent.

Just weighing in. Cassar and Conel are great young men. To show the character they do, at their young age, speaks volumes, and I'm talking over the long-haul, not just now. Both stories are compelling on many levels.

Any feelings I have are for them being unable to chase more dreams this college wrestling season. That stinks. There is a bigger picture, and they're re-focusing, that's life so to speak. Both have a tremendous future, whether it's wrestling-related or something other.

Are you implying that he could come back but chose a last chance qualifier instead of wrestling for Penn State?

i inferred that he's only going to compete in (at most) one competition before olympic trials based on the article's statement of "...Cassar will now focus on rehabbing his shoulder while still focusing his goal of qualifying for the Olympic Trials." and that he would choose the competition that gave him the best chance to qualify.

isn't he already qualified from wining the NCAA's last year?

focusing on olympic trials. guess he thinks it's easier to finish top 2 at the last chance qualifier than to win NCAAs. i agree with him.

One big difference is that Cassar does not need to compete at B10s in order to compete at Last Chance. That buys him a few more recovery weeks.

NCAA Division I Championships March 2020

The 2020 NCAA Division I champion will earn a spot in the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials

– Wrestling at the weight category they choose.

Don't see how Cassar is going to be the 2020 NCAA champ. See link to USA Wrestling list of those already qualified and Cassar is not listed and no one is listed base on their NCAA results. Ah, I see, because it is the 2020 champs, not previous season champs.

Anthony qualified for 2019 world team trials by winning 2019 NCAAs, but chose not to compete.

I think you got your answer about 2020 from a number of other posters.

I agree that Berge looked good vs. Humphreys . . . but as El Jefe noted, there could have been another knock for all we know.
