I realize there's a history of SEC bias with those guys, and Danielson's not to everyone's taste anyway, but personally, I've always enjoyed that duo's call of college football games. They've got good chemistry working together.

Nessler is more tolerable than Danielson, to me. — I’ll likely be listening to Ham and Jones while watching the game, however….. if there’s a big delay, I’ll just try to record and “sync”

speaking of announcers, Herbstreit posted this earlier today. Pretty amazing, really. I don't know why he's so popular. I find his NFL announcing to be marginal, at best.

They tend to have too good of chemistry and often go off on a tangent while the game is playing right in front of them.

Herbie is the best in the business. People here just don't him because of the Ohio State ties. He's better with college than NFL but easiest one of the most knowledgeable. Blackledge is second despite his bias during games.

That isn't my take. He sounds like a cheerleader for whoever is winning at the time. I rarely hear any real insight into strategy and game changes. He's very good on replays but that comes from the truck and he is told what to say. But he seems to be very good at talking while listening to the producers.

IIRC Herby was the first one to describe the win over OSU in 2016 as a fluke and that narrative stuck.

I'm not surprised that's your take

Re Herbie, I usually like his game commentary and think he pairs well with Chris Fowler.

That doesn't change my above point, which is that he's biased in favor of the team he played for -- no surprise or disgrace there -- and when the chips are down, he'll poor-mouth Penn State if doing so benefits Ohio State.

I mean, the record is pretty clear on this.

It doesn’t matter if Herby is any good as a broadcaster these days. He’s morphed into celebrity status. College games, NFL games, the pregame show, the playoff shows. Plus besides his own blog he’s a constant and regular guest on many radio and TV sports shows. Not bad for a journeyman QB. He annoys me at times, but Herby owns golden retrievers so he can’t be all bad.

Yet many Ohio State fans claim he's anti-Ohio State. I feel like this take is primarily because he said they should get in over us despite us betting them because we had 2 losses. He was right on that. The problem was Washington getting in. I hope it's not regarding his fake outrage when they got left out one year...that was all a joke.

Herbie is a subtle genius as far as marketing goes, but his silence and lack of enthusiasm when OSU is losing or loses is borderline unprofessional. Lucky for him, it's only happened about 10 times since he became the primetime announcer, some of which he didn't even have to call.

I don't think Herbie is anti- anything except OSU losing. He cheerleads for them constantly and I'd say we, as PSU fans, should be jealous of the fact that we don't have the mass amount of pro-PSU presence at the networks. I'm glad that Blackledge and MRob are at NBC and hope that they provide similarly PSU-centric slants towards every broadcast they do whether we are playing or not.

I think it's great CBS is hosting the White Out as well. Push it. We've had 2 big games on both of our new partners thus far and hopefully 6-8 million tune in to watch...though the competition will be stiff in the time slot. OSU/ND will eat up a chunk and 2 ranked PAC teams will get a little.

Herbie is good but you are right there is this kind of quiet annoyance but more just quiet and subdued when OSU is losing. He is a professional so you have to be studying it to really pick up on it but it is there. Not enough to be really bad and most people never notice. As PSU fans we notice given our heightened sensitivity and bias against all things OSU.

The "cheerleading" probably comes from him being giddy when OSU is doing well in a game and he lets that get out of hand at times. But again you can say it is more him being excited about the game, not necessarily shilling for OSU.

Bottom line, we can complain all we want but he is here to stay. He is a celebrity fixture for ESPN and the media face man for college football.

I watched a few minutes from last night. I felt the crew really lacked energy and interest. Like they were phoning it in.

Herbie, specifically, is really gifted in immediately and accurately discussing a play after it occurs. It was a bad game but it felt like nobody really cared.

I don't know how well suited he is for the NFL. He has been associated with college football for so long it is awkward to see him do the NFL.

Michaels looks old and tired but he may pull a Joe and go until he is about 90.

Did Collinsworth retire, by the way?

No.. Collinsworth is doing Monday or Sunday Night (can't recall). Herbie doing Thursday Night Football.

Agree that college football has its own energy, especially for the premier events Herbie does. But Thursday night NFL?

Think anyone outside of Pittsburgh or NC will watch the Tarheels vs. Panthers?

Nahh, no way we get that high of ratings, not with the tOSU/ND game at the same time as you mention. I would expect something more like 4-5 million for our game.

This weekend is a pretty loaded weekend which is going to spread out viewers. If PSU/Iowa were last weekend, yeah we probably could have gotten something higher.

"In check, not in check". Memorable line, I think they are same announcers?

FWIW, ratings were decidedly unremarkable for our game: 2.75M

tOSU/ND ruled the timeslot with 9.98M, which is not a surprise. But what might be a surprise is the Colorado/Oregon even with it being a blowout managed to get higher viewership at 10.03M.

Iowa/PSU failed to retain much of the earlier CBS game. Ole Miss/Bama was 4.611M

Not surprising. Against Domers and Nuteyes.. ND against any top three team will draw the most.

We were the JV game that night while the varsity was playing. I am surprised Bama/Ole Miss beat our ratings. Iowa is an unappealing draw and weighs the ratings down.

We need to stop playing these middling B10 opponents in our signature White Out game, Minny last year and Iowa this year. Either get a great non conference matchup like Auburn in '21 or do whatever you need to do in order to get OSU, Mich or now USC or Oregon. No other B10 opponent makes sense. Next year it looks like we could play OSU at home the final Sat in Oct then the next Sat at home vs USC. One of these games must be the White Out.

I realize there's a history of SEC bias with those guys, and Danielson's not to everyone's taste anyway, but personally, I've always enjoyed that duo's call of college football games. They've got good chemistry working together.

Jones & Ham for me

I agree but this year we have a pretty poor home slate without good options. The logical choice was UM but it was too late in the season for a night game. At least that was the party line. I think we should have gone with UM, because 110,000 would have packed the Beav despite the expected cold weather.

I don't think we could have anyway because of these Fox high nooner games. Both OSU and Mich will be that this year.

I think next year with USC, et al coming in as well as a better non-conference home slate (FOX already seems like they are going to take Texas/UM with one of their top picks), we are more likely to be able to get a premier game into the evening on NBC (or at least on CBS in late afternoon). It's also unclear how the pecking order will work with CBS fully in the mix.
