James Franklin and his staff did an excellent job with Penn State's offensive game plan going away from its tendencies with its passing game especially on first down.
For the game Penn State completed 9 of 11 first down passes for 104 yards with one 6-yard TD pass to Eugene Lewis. In the first half alone Christian Hackenberg completed all six of his first down passes for 51 yards.
That set the tone for Penn State's offense keeping Illinois' defense defense off balance for most of the game. Hackenberg ended up completing 21 of 29 passes for 266 yards with TD passes of 6 yards to Lewis and a 5-yard TD pass to Chris Godwin. Hackenberg in Penn State's last six games has thrown 12 TD passes with zero interceptions and for the season Hackenberg has thrown 13 TD passes with just two interceptions.
What I really liked about the passing game was the way Saquon Barkley became involved in the pass offense. He finished the game with three catches for 58 and finished the game with 142 yards of total offense.
In my mind this was the best offensive game plan by Penn State's coaching staff this season.
