Christmas come early!! Tan Tom couldn’t wait 24 hours!!

Clinging to the back like a baby Koala to his mother? That's not a rideout.

That was one of the few times I've started a match pulling for one wrestler, then finished the match pulling for the other. Fix tried to back his way into the championship and Smith did everything he could help him.

If Nick would have received a point for every time someone on the Okie bench yelled "Hands to the face!"......he would have won by Tech Fall in the 1st.

I think Nick needs to adjust his style a little if the hands to the face rule is going to be so strictly enforced. I watched carefully, and what he was doing was legal, but he gets really close when he covers the opponent's forehead. He might get dinged for that in the future, and it could cost him.

Do you feel the same about RBY against Pletcher in the dual? Zain against Sorenson the one time it was close? Refs give a lot more deference during the UTB rideouts--I thought that stalemate was insane, and it cost Fix the championship.

Your memory is failing you, either that or you're reaching.

RBY did not have double boots in. Pletcher got 2 restarts in OT. One after RBY got a mat return OOB, the other after a stall call on RBY on the legs ... proper call.

Pletcher had 3 chances, it's on him that he couldn't get out. Suriano was given a 1 restart .. as he should have ... he used it.

Zain was a long time ago, but I recall a crab ride in the 1st OT ... BS got out ... in the 2nd OT he flattened BS out before putting in a leg. Totally different than jumping on the back and hanging on with a stall ride.

There are two separate issues here:

1) Tan Tom is classless. It’s a terrible way to run a wrestling program by making public excuses for why your guy lost.

2) I can never remember a NCAA Championship where the referees determined so many outcomes. It’s a real problem. Phantom takedowns, missed takedowns, missed head gear calls... the level of officiating was consistently low and it’s not fair to guys who work so hard to have people no one came to see, the officials, determine the outcome. Even the calls they got “right” take too long to adjudicate. It’d really hard to grow a sport when a casual fan tunes in and watches a debacle like the Cassar-Steveson match where bricks were flying everywhere.

I have an interesting anecdote about this tweet, of which I'm unsurprised. Last night before the Nickal Moore match Ryan was in the tunnel surrounded by a small group of coaches while Moore was getting ready. Ryan was using one of the coaches to mimic McKenna's position while he mimicked Yianni's position, which was amusing given the positions they were mimicking and that he was wearing a full suit. Ryan: "That's not a takedown! Not a takedown!"

Poor Micah and Kollin. Their head coach cannot maintain focus during the most important time of their careers.

Then I went over to where Bo was warming up. Cael was mimicking Mark Hall while Jake was playing the part of Zahid.

Just kidding, they were all completely chill, sitting on folding chairs waiting for the 184 match to end, Bo pacing back and forth. Cell phone shot just before Nickal went out:

I love overtime over criteria, but keep them on their feet 2 minutes go time, or some variation. Ride outs are dumb imo
Yes criteria. one should always be rewarded for scoring last. Working for last is the way to go.

Bo Jordan was there in his place. Classy actually. I really like Ryan...... except near a camera or a mic. He was front and center on their team picture. His point is spot on. He could have publicly waited a few days, used another example to make his point without appearing to be whining.

His kids appear to be very respectful of the sport, their competition and have fun together. They were laughing and joking walking up to accept their trophy. McKenna, Martin the whole crew. It’s over. They have a really good team. Not everyone reaches his or her goals. Life goes on.
Ironically....Ryan did the EXACT same thing in support of Bo where ANOTHER missed/blown call cost Bo Jordan a title against Hall. That’s prob not a popular thing to say on this board so I’m not trying to rouse by saying that, just trying to paint a picture of what’s probably going through Ryan’s head in his frustration thinking this has now cost 2 of his wrestlers national championships. It’s brutal,

I just didn't realize your beef was specifically the double-boots. I guess that position usually leads to a stalemate in regulation. It seems to me refs are more lenient during the UTB, but maybe they shouldn't be. Suriano did use his restart, as he got out, forcing the second SV period where he eventually won. I don't think the ref should have called that stalemate, but I could see someone feeling otherwise. Can't say that didn't ultimately change the outcome of the biggest match of the year, though, cause it did.

I just don't think its a good look for a coach of Ryan's standing (and appointments) to publicly call out refs like that. Most other sports would probably fine him, right? There are venues for that that make a difference, and don't teach your charges that the bully pulpit is your best option when you can actually be helping them process their pain. Just my opinion.

PS--it wasn't 2 for BoJo against Hall. That's not my opinion, it's fact. :p

I remember Joe going public with his criticisms re officiating against Michigan back in the day. And he was right and the league did ultimately put replay in place. That was probably after numerous attempts to deal with it quietly by sending questioned calls to the league. I did see a number of calls that seemed wrong and were upheld. So you agree that the officiating sucked, just that he should have kept quiet about it publicly?

Maybe it was my bias, but it seemed to me that the bricks flying were an attempt to give Steveson a breather rather than legitimate attempts to overturn a call. They should have a time run-off if it's late in the match and you lose the challenge.

The refs saved Yanni just as they saved Nolf.
How did they save Nolf? If you are talking about the 1st period TD that was reversed, it was just that, a first period TD! It was not the end of the bout and Nolf had 4 more minutes to make up the 2 point deficit. His attack
rate and pace would have probably picked up, etc. I though you knew something about wrestling but to say that a 3-2 match simply becomes a 4-3 match is rediculous! Think about it!

He conveniently forgets that Yianni was robbed of a TD and 2 NF. Refs award that and the last TD call for Yianni does not even matter. Little hard to complain about the referee when he screwed up even worse for the other guy. He should have just stuck to we need independent review.
