There is a difference between Franklin and Paterno I was thinking about after watching the video interview with Franklin the other day. People were asking about players by name, including freshman and he was responding about them by name. Whereas Paterno would say something like "gee lets give em a chance to do something" or some such and never talk recruits or freshmen and underclass men and seldom about any one by name especially in pre season. Not saying one is better than the other, I like getting more information out of the program, but wonder if its in the kids best interest and maybe Paterno did them a favor by shielding them from media expectations. I also understand it is a different era and with instant communication, that sort of communication expected. And I understand it is a business and pumps up the fans to hear and see more, but just wonder is it better for some 18, 19 year old to not hear about himself from the coach at his press conf.

First off neither Joe or CJF can talk about recruits, It against NCAA regs. Second if CJF didn't talk about the younger kids there wouldn't be a whole lot to talk about given how young our team is. For the RBs if you don't want to talk about the underclassmen, Lynch is the only player you can talk about, same for WRs it's Lewis or Zano, DBs it's Williams or Lucas. We are young, very young team.

In any endeavor there are usually many ways to achieve the same result. Over time we can often determine which way is the best but sometimes we cannot. For me, at least, it's too early to judge much of anything Coach Franklin is doing. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy what I believe will be a very memorable era in the history of Penn State football.

In addition to what others have wrote, Joe spent a good portion of his early coaching career during the era when freshmen weren't eligible and there were JV teams. He experienced that and felt it was a good rule even though he adapted when it was changed. Today's coaches never dealt with freshman ineligibility so there in no reason for them to reminisce about the rule. To them playing freshmen is just the way it is so there's no reason to pretend they don't exist.

To be a successful CFB coach at the highest level today, you need to be someone who can build excitement. Coach Franklin does this through his tireless energy and communication. Other coaches, like Joe formerly and currently Nick Saban and Urban Meyer, can build excitement by flashing national championship trophies and rings.

Franklin is building this roster from....I don't want to say nothing but very close....due to sanctions and a depleted roster and no depth. We live in a world of "me's" and "I's." The kids want their names mentioned.

It is a different time we live in.

as an example the " we are better" tweets of Franklin, very very different than anything Paterno would have done. I like getting more info, and understand pumping up the fan base to sell tickets and attention and get more recruits, but also wonder about the "student athletes" and what really in their best interest

Steve G, first I wondered if you are a JoeBot. Your last post convinced me that you are indeed a JoeBot. Comparing Joe and Franklin is out of bounds, someone should through a red flag.

Coach Franklin is doing his best to continue the traditions of Penn State. Time have changed and you should do the same. To say the least, your posts have pejorative connotations.
