In honor of Brock Zacherl’s funny Twitter exchange with Flo, I’m taking a look at Clarion’s lineup next.
125 – Park (So) <Brookville, PA> or White (Fr) <Central Dauphin, PA>
Gavin Park went 18-15 last season and didn’t qualify for the tournament (no wins against qualifiers). Tyshawn White went 3-4 in limited action as a redshirt for Lock Haven last season. White lost a 29-23 decision to Tommy Cox (NC State) in the National Collegiate Open. That must’ve been an interesting match. Anyway, White is a 4-time PIAA place-winner, coming in 2nd his senior season @126 (losing to Luke Karam).
133 – Gromacki (Sr) <Cathedral Prep, PA>
Jake Gromacki is returning from injury. He was 8-5 last season before being injured. Gromacki was a NCAA qualifier in 2017, going 1-2. Roshaun Cooley finished last season as the starter and went 8-17 overall.
141 – Ortiz (So) <Brookville, PA>
Taylor Ortiz and Brock Zacherl are flip-flopping weights. Ortiz went 26-12 @149 last season and 0-2 in the tournament.
149 – Zacherl (Sr) <Brookville, PA>
Three-time qualifier Brock Zacherl is back for his last season with the Golden Eagles. Zacherl went 29-3 overall last season @141 (including a win against Nick Lee) and made it to the round of 12 at the tournament from the 7 seed (1-2 in 2017 and 2016 @141). He had some bad luck in the draw with Kevin Jack dropping into the wrestlebacks early. Zacherl defeated eventual AA Chad Red in the first round.
157 – Shay (So) <New Fairfield, CT> or Tanner (Jr) <Port Allegany, PA>
Avery Shay went 21-14 as a true freshman last season and didn’t qualify for the tournament (no wins against qualifiers). Mac Tanner also got some starts last season and went 9-9 overall.
165 – DeLong (Sr) <Kane, PA>
Evan DeLong returns from a redshirt season @174 where he went 18-5 (no wins against qualifiers – he did beat probable future tOSU starter, Kaleb Romero). DeLong was Clarion’s starter @165 in 2017 and 2016 and @157 in 2015 and has not yet qualified for the tournament. Max Wholabaugh started as a true freshman last season and went 11-16.
174 – Cahill (Jr) <Berlin Brothersvalley, PA>
Taylor Cahill went 20-11 last season mostly @174 (he had some dual starts @165 and @184 – no wins against qualifiers). He’s taking over for Dominic Riguous who went 23-8 last season and didn’t qualify for the tournament.
184 – Funck (So) <North Lebanon, PA> or Bagoly (Fr) <Exeter Twp, PA>
Luke Funck went 16-17 as a true freshman starter for most of last season for Campbell. Tyler Bagoly went 17-9 in his redshirt season for Clarion. Greg Bulsak went 21-9 overall last season and 0-2 at the tournament.
197 – Bulsak (So) <South Park, PA>
Greg Bulsak moves up from 184, taking over for Dustin Conti who went 25-9 last season and 0-2 in the tournament.
Heavy – Cahill (So) < Berlin Brothersvalley, PA> or Bivens (Sr) <Eastern Guilford, NC>
Toby Cahill went 15-17 as a true freshman starter last season. Willie Bivens also transferred from Campbell. He was their starter @197 in 2016/17 (11-16 record).
Clarion returns 3 of its 4 qualifiers from last season and a former qualifier from injury. The Golden Eagles got 2 points at the tournament last season, all from Brock Zacherl. Clarion has a pretty decent lineup and should do well in the EWL this season.
