Comparing Oakland in State College isn't a fair comparison. State College is a lovely idyllic, textbook college town with beautiful streets, a great downtown, and a stunning campus. Oakland is an urban campus, with urban architecture and no real downtown.
To say Oakland is a dump compared to State College isn't accurate at all. Oakland is very, very different. I would never want to attend college in such a setting, but I can see why a student desiring a more urban experience would choose Pitt. I don't think it's a good choice, mind you, but I understand.
And for those of you commenting on if I'd been there recently, yes, I have. I had to go in 2013 for the first time, and was expecting a dump. I stayed in the Wyndham University Center, right up the street from the Cathedral of Learning. I was pleasantly surprised to find the area clean and hospitable, and was also happy to find local bars/restaurants that I enjoyed right around the campus. I needed to go once after that as well.
The architecture, as previously stated, is urban and kind of sterile. It's a far cry from State College. But, to say Oakland/the campus is an unsafe, unsanitary dump couldn't be farther from the truth.
If it's about the best Urban experience then Drexel or Penn have Pitt crushed. Not Temple... I live not too far from Temple and it's not the best. I don't walk north from my apartment ever. That is a dump.
Either way college towns are the way to go and Penn State has them all beat. Every. Where.

My point wasn't that I think Pitt is better than any other urban campus.....only that after having experienced it for myself, I understand why one would go there. It's not a dump, a slum, or a robber's haven like some on this board (and in this thread) would like you to believe.
Um, no. Drexel's campus is awful. Penn's campus is nice, and their west Philly neighborhood has improved a lot in recent years, but it's still sketchy if you wonder too far. I worked in the area for a few years. It sucks. Oakland has more of a college-town feel, and a short Uber ride gets you to the southside for better nightlife and better bar-hopping than any one area of Philly.
Disagree it is average at best. Always construction always traffic and if you go two blocks n the wrong direction you get shot at.

Agreed. It's all about preferences. I'm sure there are a lot of Pitt students who would go crazy in State College. Pitt and Ohio State, from a campus/college experience perspective, would be a much better comparison.
I love Pitt football. There will be some Epic message board material this year when Pitt loses out on some of these recruits and Narduzzi doesn't live up to what they expected.
I get that you think your particular college experience was great, but you have no idea what you missed out on. I have LIVED in both places, you have no idea how much better your college experience could have been.
Your post is inaccurate for multiple reasons. First as a college aged kid, the "extra" stuff that is available in Pittsburgh is pretty much off limits to you because you are a poor college kid. Sure a Pirates game is cheap, but it's not that far to drive from PSU to go to a Pirates game either... plus you have the options to drive to Philly or NYC. All the activities that are within the grasp of a typical college student are available at both, there are just better at PSU, there are just more of them at PSU, and you get to enjoy them in a safe/beautiful college town.
Secondly, an area doesn't open up opportunities, your education does. Someone doesn't get a job simply because they already live in the area, in fact all things being equal we will hire the person from someplace else. There is no disputing that a PSU degree opens up more opportunities than Pitt degree. PSU is recognized as #1 amongst corporate recruiters, and is universally considered a better school than Pitt. I work at a large Pittsburgh based technology company, the PSU grads outnumber the Pitt grads by at least 10-1.
You must not have been to Philly in a while. Drexel has really been building up. University City is getting much better and CC bars are great. Been out in southside and yes the fun is more condensed but it's not the same as Philly overall right now. Why do you think Philly landed number 2 on that places to visit list this year. Making huge strides.
I left in 2013. There is a lot of construction at Drexel, but it hasn't been called the ugliest campus in the US for no reason. Will the new construction help in this regard? Probably. CC bars are great for young urban professionals but most are not exactly geared toward the college crowd. Southside has more places for a 21-22 year old college kid.
Philly is a great city. I've lived in this area for almost 30 years. But being from western PA originally, I visit Pittsburgh often. I've talked to a lot of Philly people who talk smack about Pittsburgh, and when I ask when they last visited I usually get "um, never". I'm sure you know that Pittsburgh has been highly ranked as places to visit/live for several years running.
Certainly, and southside construction was a large part of that. But Philly has made leaps in bounds over the two years I've been in center city. The two years before that 11-13 when I lived in Manayunk I swore I'd never move into the city, I'm glad I did bc it's on an upshot to the moon.
Brandywine Reality Trust is building a new residential building just off Drexel's campus, as well as other cities all over the city. Drexel is certainly no longer the ugliest and has definitely surpassed Pitt, sorry but it's the truth, and Penn's has always been better.
247 and scout have him ranked as a 3-star, rivals hasn't ranked him yet, and ESPN doesn't have him in their database yet.
His other offers are all MAC level with the exception of Navy, Army, UConn, and Temple.... although you could argue those are MAC level too. (scout lists a Cinci offer, but no one else does).
I've been in two blocks in all directions of that campus. I lock my doors everywhere I go....including State College. So, your statement is irrelevant.
Perhaps because PSU puts out more grads, there are more of them. Additionally, it depends on the industry. Pitt has some strong points, and PSU has some too.
But, don't let your blind hatred towards all things Pitt and your erection towards all things PSU cloud your judgement.
I like Pittsburgh as a city and some of the suburbs, but Oakland is nothing special. State College is much nicer than Oakland, obviously.
I guess we'll just disagree on that (Drexel vs Pitt). There is also much in the Pitt/CMU construction pipeline that will change both campuses as well, including some new residential buildings.
Both cities, and their respective university communities, are changing/growing for the better.

I don't love Pitt. I just hate when PSU fans characterize their campus as a dirty slum and complain about Pitt's obsession with PSU while creating more Pitt threads.

Let me try to dumb it down even further. Let's say you walk by a group of the most attractive ladies you've ever seen. They openly start making fun of you in public, pointing out your physical flaws. Oakland isn't too bad, crimewise. My car was only vandalized there twice and my son was only held up at gunpoint once, in between bomb threats. As for Primanti's, their pizza is pretty good.
