I'm in Oakland a lot, and haven't yet been mugged or raped! We really do overstate the danger component here. Although, I wouldn't necessarily want to be near the O at 2am on a weekend, just in case.
Pittsburgh area codeForgive my ignorance, but what is the 412? What is that a reference to?
I'm sure you realize that psuguy04 is a troll and will always go against the grain with anything we discuss about PSU. He claims to be a "PSU guy", but he is telling you to take off the "blue and white sunglasses". Typical for him. Troll.
If it's about the best Urban experience then Drexel or Penn have Pitt crushed. Not Temple... I live not too far from Temple and it's not the best. I don't walk north from my apartment ever. That is a dump.It would also be great if you knew what you were talking about. I'm sorry I speak my mind, and think that Pitt is an OK place. If those things make me a troll.....then so be it.
Comparing Oakland in State College isn't a fair comparison. State College is a lovely idyllic, textbook college town with beautiful streets, a great downtown, and a stunning campus. Oakland is an urban campus, with urban architecture and no real downtown.
To say Oakland is a dump compared to State College isn't accurate at all. Oakland is very, very different. I would never want to attend college in such a setting, but I can see why a student desiring a more urban experience would choose Pitt. I don't think it's a good choice, mind you, but I understand.
And for those of you commenting on if I'd been there recently, yes, I have. I had to go in 2013 for the first time, and was expecting a dump. I stayed in the Wyndham University Center, right up the street from the Cathedral of Learning. I was pleasantly surprised to find the area clean and hospitable, and was also happy to find local bars/restaurants that I enjoyed right around the campus. I needed to go once after that as well.
The architecture, as previously stated, is urban and kind of sterile. It's a far cry from State College. But, to say Oakland/the campus is an unsafe, unsanitary dump couldn't be farther from the truth.

Either way college towns are the way to go and Penn State has them all beat. Every. Where.

Disagree it is average at best. Always construction always traffic and if you go two blocks n the wrong direction you get shot at.Oakland's really not all that bad. The area around Presby is just typical medical campus architecture, and the buildings are really quite handsome in a very old-school sort of way. I don't know how you could call that area gloomy at all. If anything, the part of campus up by Presby, WPIC, and the Pete is pretty nice.
Yes it literally is a slum go two blocks over the back end of the campus next time you are in the area at night. Tell me you don't lock your car doors. Not disagreeing at all there.
My point wasn't that I think Pitt is better than any other urban campus.....only that after having experienced it for myself, I understand why one would go there. It's not a dump, a slum, or a robber's haven like some on this board (and in this thread) would like you to believe.

Sorry, no disrespect to State College intended, but I've been there, and there is no comparison to Pittsburgh as a whole. Your college experience may have been great, and it is a nice college town, but I'm talking about as an overall experience and opportunities to thrive.
You must not have been to Philly in a while. Drexel has really been building up. University City is getting much better and CC bars are great. Been out in southside and yes the fun is more condensed but it's not the same as Philly overall right now. Why do you think Philly landed number 2 on that places to visit list this year. Making huge strides.Um, no. Drexel's campus is awful. Penn's campus is nice, and their west Philly neighborhood has improved a lot in recent years, but it's still sketchy if you wonder too far. I worked in the area for a few years. It sucks. Oakland has more of a college-town feel, and a short Uber ride gets you to the southside for better nightlife and better bar-hopping than any one area of Philly.

Certainly, and southside construction was a large part of that. But Philly has made leaps in bounds over the two years I've been in center city. The two years before that 11-13 when I lived in Manayunk I swore I'd never move into the city, I'm glad I did bc it's on an upshot to the moon.I left in 2013. There is a lot of construction at Drexel, but it hasn't been called the ugliest campus in the US for no reason. Will the new construction help in this regard? Probably. CC bars are great for young urban professionals but most are not exactly geared toward the college crowd. Southside has more places for a 21-22 year old college kid.
Philly is a great city. I've lived in this area for almost 30 years. But being from western PA originally, I visit Pittsburgh often. I've talked to a lot of Philly people who talk smack about Pittsburgh, and when I ask when they last visited I usually get "um, never". I'm sure you know that Pittsburgh has been highly ranked as places to visit/live for several years running.
Wow, I can't get anything right today....
You are correct he is a Sr. and that means he is a MAC level prospect who will likely finish a 0 or 2* recruit. For some reason I forgot that the class of 2016 was this years class. Too much multi tasking going on.
What I find more interesting is that some of the WPIAL guys who are all real close now are going to be competing against each other hard this fall and maybe won't be as close after they start losing to each other.
Yes it literally is a slum go two blocks over the back end of the campus next time you are in the area at night. Tell me you don't lock your car doors.
Secondly, an area doesn't open up opportunities, your education does. Someone doesn't get a job simply because they already live in the area, in fact all things being equal we will hire the person from someplace else. There is no disputing that a PSU degree opens up more opportunities than Pitt degree. PSU is recognized as #1 amongst corporate recruiters, and is universally considered a better school than Pitt. I work at a large Pittsburgh based technology company, the PSU grads outnumber the Pitt grads by at least 10-1.
All that may be true, it may be much nicer than Detroit. But compared to State College, it is a dump.

Brandywine Reality Trust is building a new residential building just off Drexel's campus, as well as other cities all over the city. Drexel is certainly no longer the ugliest and has definitely surpassed Pitt, sorry but it's the truth, and Penn's has always been better.
This morning on 247 he was unranked. That is weird that he is announcing tonight and is all of a sudden the number 14 player in the state.247 and scout have him ranked as a 3-star, rivals hasn't ranked him yet, and ESPN doesn't have him in their database yet.
His other offers are all MAC level with the exception of Navy, Army, UConn, and Temple.... although you could argue those are MAC level too. (scout lists a Cinci offer, but no one else does).
That is soooo weird though. I trust in 247 rankings, normally, and for a kid to be unranked and then magically that afternoon be #14 in the state????That's nothing. On KDKA tonight he will be proclaimed the next Rod Woodson.
Not to denigrate him, but I am pretty plugged into CC football, and he's not on anybody's radar much.
412 is the Pittsburgh area codeForgive my ignorance, but what is the 412? What is that a reference to?
Remember when Sterling Jenkins announced on KDKA? This is the same douche that starTed the miles Sander flipped crap a few months ago.I screwed up multiple details, my bad (found this out late last night when I couldn't sleep)
Bricen Garner is announcing tomorrow night not tonight, but he is expected to select Pitt. He is actually a 2016 prospect which is why he has no stars yet. Also, long way to go to keep him if and when he does get ranked.
Now the producer for the same station (of which I am not familiar is saying that someone else could announce).
Apparently this guy is a Pitt fan boy. someone in Pittsburgh is going to need to provide me some context of this buffoon. When Googled I did find out this about him from last year: http://thisisgettingold.net/2014/03...ranklins-tweets-still-follows-him-on-twitter/
Perhaps because PSU puts out more grads, there are more of them. Additionally, it depends on the industry. Pitt has some strong points, and PSU has some too.
But, don't let your blind hatred towards all things Pitt and your erection towards all things PSU cloud your judgement.
http://247sports.com/Player/Bricen-Garner-79368At this very moment, he is unranked on 247 and on Rivals.
LOL and my thoughts exactly. He is definitely winning the Mike Farrell idiot of the week award this week.I'm sure that idiot Karlo is involved somehow.
Thanks for adding ZERO to the discussion. Of course Pitt has some nice programs, some even ranked higher than the PSU equivalent. Thank you Captain Obvious. But that doesn't change the fact that PSU is a higher regarded school in general, and also #1 amongst corporate recruiters. A PSU degree opens up more doors for you, you can't refute that.
There aren't 10 times as many PSU grads, so that point is moot. Don't let your love of Pitt cloud your "judgement". I don't hate Pitt, I just feel sorry for Pitt fans. I laugh at their expense.
I don't love Pitt. I just hate when PSU fans characterize their campus as a dirty slum and complain about Pitt's obsession with PSU while creating more Pitt threads.
First off, the campus is not a dirty slum.
Secondly, if Pitt is as irrelevant as some around here claim........then there's no reason to post about them or visit their forums.
It's not a dirty slum when compared to PSU. Comparing the campuses isn't an equal comparison--they're two totally different animals.Their campus is a dirty slum... when compared to Penn State's. Why do you keep missing that last part? I bet you are one of those Pitt guys who always likes to truncate "with the benefit of hindsight" and "I don't know what you call it".
Something else you seemingly keep missing, and continue to beat the drum about just like the idiots at the Lair. Just because we post about them, doesn't mean they are in the least bit relevant. It simply means we are having fun at their expense. Why? Because it's easy, fun, and they deserve it. Why do YOU try to put any more meaning to it than that? What is your obsession?

And again...if Pitt is so obsessed with us and so irrelevant...who cares what they do or say? All the threads over here about them shows that there is a large segment of our canvass is just as obsessed with them as they are with us.
Lol you are something else. They are directly comparable. Both are college campuses, with students, roads, classroom buildings, surrounding areas, etc. One is a dump, the other is State College.

Let me try to dumb it down even further. Let's say you walk by a group of the most attractive ladies you've ever seen. They openly start making fun of you in public, pointing out your physical flaws. Would you walk away thinking "I am the man, those ladies are obsessed with me". Of course not. You'd probably feel pretty low, and hopefully want to stop posting on the internet. Pitt fans SHOULD feel the exact same way. But for some reason those loony's don't, which makes us just make fun of them and laugh even harder, and the cycle repeats.
Lol you are something else.
They're college campuses....one in the middle of an area with 1 million people, and the other in the middle of the countryside with about 60,000 people....but they are directly comparable and the same. Come on, man. Stop jerking off to the Lion Shrine for once and use your brain.
