Coach Wayne Hardin Passes Away

His Temple teams of the late '70s and early '80s were very good and usually gave PSU all it could handle. Had some outstanding seasons at Navy before going to Temple.

Sad news. Great coach who had those less-talented Temple teams ready to play. We needed some big plays and some good luck to win close ones in '75 and '76 in Philly.
Wrt the Garden State Bowl in '79, I think, vs. Cal, I remember talking to a older friend who followed college football closely, and he said 'Temple will beat the hell out of them physically, and Cal won't know what to do. Temple (who was a very good team that year anyway) will win.' And sure enough....

Wayne was a coach I alway liked. He often gave us all we could handle. Rest in Peace.

Joe and Wayne.

Coach Hardin lived across the street from us in the late 1970's (Maple Glen in Upper Dublin Township). My first gold bag was an old Temple University golf bag that he was going to toss - gave it to me instead. A little duct tape to patch up a tear or two and I was in business!

I'll never forget the 1978 game against Temple at the Vet, the season opener on a Friday night. We won on a late FG by Matt Bahr, 10 - 7. Harden's defense gave us fits all night and he had his punter, Casey Murphy, punting on every 3rd down to keep Joe guessing and gaining field position. Great game plan by Hardin. And the '78 team played 'Bama for the NC that season with guys like Clark, Millen, Fusina, etc...

I was at that game. Boring to put it mildly and the Temple punter kept backing up PSU.

Worked with a guy who was an assistant coach with him for one year. Said he was quite a ladies man, had a nickname among the staff that was a play-on-words on his last name. A great guy and an excellent football coach.
