Coaches on the HOT-HOT seat

Interim AD + proven track record + under contract + low revenue sport=minimal heat

Coaches in wrestling aren't typically dismissed due to results. Whether right or wrong it is the reality of the sport. Would take a few more seasons of lull at MN for J to really experience heat. Hopefully things improve and J leaves on his own terms with the program strong.

JRob has a contract extension until 2019. He'll be 73 then and only need one more year for maximum social security.

FRL 108 speculates that McCoy, Peters and Davis......

McCoy deserves it, Peters I would give another too. Davis I feel awful about.

No speculation on JRob though
Maybe I'm wrong but I have to think that this past season is the reason you would think JRob's name might/should be brought up in any hot seat conversation. If that is the case:
Being the coach that put the program in position to be a perennial top 5 program (many of them contending for if not winning a title) then having 1 down year doesn't even warm the seat let alone make it hot in any sport at any level. Add the reasons grapple6 listed specific to Minnesota and specific to wrestling plus the fact that the majority of programs are in worse shape/trending that way longer than the Gophers and it would be quite a long list to discuss before getting to JRob. FRL is limited to an hour.

Is he hurtin' for cash?

There are rumors that J-Rob is much like Allen Iverson and has burned through a lot of $$$$. J-Rob refuses to wear the same suit twice at matches and therefore buys a new one at every away match. J-Rob travels with a posse and treats all his wrestling camp homies to free meals and drinks. In addition, he has invested in several steakhouses in St. Paul that flopped like many of his teams at Nationals. Wishing J-Rob the best, I once saw him at a gentlemens club in Iowa City as well, confirming those needs as well. Only difference between J-Rob and AI is that J-Rob would never beat women.

Brands will be on the hot seat very soon....The Iowa guys i talked to want rid of him !!!! A lot of guys end up hating the sport after 2 years wrestling for him these days..Not all but a lot of very highly ranked guys coming out of High School....

JRob was the one who showed everybody else how to make money off wrestling camps. JRob is hardly in a position of worrying about what he is going to do to make ends meet when retired.
Hell, I was just being facetious since Jammit seemed to imply that JRob's waiting to retire when his SS benefit maxes out.

PBS......your not a regular around here so you dont know the personalities of our annoymous brotherhood. That being said you have fair points if this was an actual discussion about J being on the hotseat.

My comment was TIC. The goofers and J catch a Lil extra ribbing due to cousin eddy and his trolling proclivities.

This message will self destruct in 10 seconds

Without knowing how he spends his money, nobody can make any statements about whether someone should be worry free or not. I knew a couple that made 300k per year that spent 400k. Ya never know.

Why has McCoy not found success in Maryland?

I would suggest he found it, but was unable to sustain it. He produced some real nice wrestlers. The move to the BigTen without the horses to compete has really highlighted the down swing.

I have always thought you can be broke at many different levels. You can be broke at $35,000 per year and just as broke at $350,000.

Don't think Brands will be on a hot seat. Just got a 5 year extension last year. Funny how some of you guys know so much about his wrestlers hating him. Could you find me a link or tweet from any of these so called wrestlers who have said or talked about the hate? Thank you.

And you can be the University of Maryland athletics dept its last few years in the ACC ...

By "some of you guys" you mean one. Most of us here are both tired of/bored by that accusation and exhausted at the idea of having to shoot it down yet again.

I love Brands, hope he stays forever

This is about right.

Frankly, B10 Maryland is a much worse job than ACC Maryland was. Other than tiny DE, worst in-state HS talent pool from NY to VA. Maybe enough to compete with UNC and NC State, not nearly enough to compete with PSU and Iowa and Ohio State, etc.

Little fan base other than Robin Ficker. When they were ACC champs, tumbleweeds blew thru the arena. That's despite Kerry being a marketing major and busting his hump to get the crowds out.

Also can't minimize the impact of the past athletics debt at Maryland ... was about $95M. B10 bailout check was the reason the school bolted from the ACC. School cut a number of sports and pinched the rest. Gotta think that has something to do with the recent talent decline -- entering the arms race with a toddler's water pistol.

Probably other reasons, and can't say Kerry did a knockout job of late ... but that job is not an easy turnaround.

Is MD fully funded in wrestling?

Their practice room is on a hallway in the Verizon center. Not the type of space that screams "come wrestle here". The best high school wrestlers in the state often transfer to prep programs. It is a basketball college in a basketball state. The whole Maryland wrestling thing feels like it's the next sport to be cut. In addition, it gets NO press in the Baltimore or DC papers. Why run an article on MD wrestling when you can run a 19th column on some obscure basketball game in March? Robin doesn't help attract fans either.

In terms of 9.9 scholarships? I think they are, but maybe someone can confirm.

In terms of operating and capital budgets? Not a chance -- most programs aren't, need money from the AD.

Adding to garw's point above: word was Kerry had to lobby hard to keep the program alive a few years ago when the AD cut sports during peak debt. For that alone, he should get some grace period.

Maryland is a private school haven for sports. Lacrosse is the sport that many kids pursue. These same kids in PA might be wrestlers. That has an impact on the quality of wrestling in MD. Additionally, Cary Kolat is now the HC at Campbell College (NC) and he just landed the Baltimore Sun Wrestler of the year. The kid is a 160 lb'r. I believe Kolat was affiliated at one time with a program in Reisterstown. There are a lot of head winds for wrestling in MD. I hope they hold on to Kerry.

No offense taken. There's only so many times we can swat that away before we just ignore it ... or we haven't yet found a way to mock it.

And if you were at the Heartland were you one of a group of 4 Iowa fans who stayed up all night in the lobby Saturday night and were joined around 4:45 AM by a crazy Penn State fan who sat down and talked with you for 2+ hours, including using his laptop to settle disputes re who Mark Perry beat or lost to at NCAAs and at which weight? Long shot I know but just curious.

Sorry NoVa Lion was not me this old man needs his sleep. Perry lost 2 matches in the four years he was in the
NCAA's one the finals his freshman year and then went up a weight and lost in the semis @174 and took 3rd.
Then he won titles at 165 his jr and sr year.

Correct on Perry which I did not remember (the weight jump up and then back down) and neither did any of the Iowa fans. We did all remember the placing but not who he lost to and beat. Always fun to look back on prior year results plus Mark was one of my favorite non PSU wrestlers.

Can't be too many PA wrestlers who went to Iowa under Brands ... Evans, Dziewa, who else am I missing?

Since they are now both D1 college assistant coaches, finding it hard to believe he made them hate the sport.

Well lets put it this way. The 2 guys i know pretty well is not very high on wrestling like they were in H.S. I am not going to put them out...Kind of felt bad for them now...Maybe they just need a break who knows....
