NCAA take note.
R. J. Hampton was on Fox Business this morning. He's a 6'5" point guard. He is the no. 6 rated HS hoops player. He has offers from all the big guys.
He has decided to forego the "one and done" route to the NBA in favor of playing professional basketball in New Zealand for a year (actually more like five months) and then enter the 2020 NBA draft. So he'll make some money, play in a fairly competitive pro league, experience another culture, and get himself ready for the NBA draft.
He came across as a really smart kid, well spoken, head screwed on straight. His agent already has a shoe contract in the works for him. He doesn't need college.
I don't know if he is the first to take this route, but I wouldn't be surprised if others take this route, too. So if the top 10 - 20 HS players opt to play for a year overseas and then go to the NBA draft, what impact does this have on NCAA hoops?
By the way, he said his main reason for doing this is that the NCAA does not adequately protect and compensate elite athletes who bring in millions for schools (and the NCAA).
