No question, it was stupid..but it's a lot more than just that.
In fact, the Comeys of the world are not stupid people. On the contrary, they have high IQs and an array of educational credentials. They know very well what they're doing and what they're saying.
So this goes beyond stupidity. It is reckless. It is hateful. It is outrageous. And though it may not be "criminal" in a strictly legal context, since admittedly you couldn't get a criminal conviction on it in a court of law, I still think it's "criminal" in the figurative sense of the word.
The Secret Service and FBI don't open investigations on people who do things that are only stupid...but they do investigate stupidity that crosses certain lines. Comey crossed one of those lines.
