Conel is good to go

It's not cool to link to items behind paywalls

My being uncool is not news.

I read Tikk's description and decided I wanted to rewatch the match. This link was the top Google result. I clicked and it played. I didn't even realize it was behind a paywall.

My sincerest apologies to non-subscribers who must now be haunted by the knowledge that there is content on Flo they are not able to access.

FWIW... I believe that Beard is actually from Berks County & would have attended Daniel Boone HS had he gone to public school

I grew up in Daniel Boone S.D. and I also recall reading that Michael had originally been in Daniel Boone. I believe he may have wrestled in there prior to high school.

I haven't watched the Conel pin in the quarters against Moore from a point far enough back until just now and it's a really nice bit of wrestling by Conel to get there. While they're both on their knees after a weak shot by Moore, Conel tries to use a left underhook to turn Moore but Moore kind of sits out to slip it. Then Conel grabs Moore's right leg and nearly holds on, as both get to their feet. Conel wastes no time going double unders before, perhaps after detecting what looks like Moore's sluggishness, jacking him up, hipping in, and tossing Moore straight to his back. This wasn't Moore getting caught, Conel had him on his heels with some relentless smart wrestling.

Touche man. Not to mention, he beat Moore again in the 3rd/4th place match and I recalled had him flat again that match. I recalled he gave the eventual national champ Mach from NC State a pretty good match (got the first TD but ended up on his back when he was down 4-2)

Being in our room will only help but first and foremost, I hope he stays healthy.

I don't think it is a wild hunch. Conel could have gone a lot of places to wrestle, if he came to PSU you would think that he is the starter unless he gets hurt or is ineffective.

It is similar to Tommy Stevens transferring to Mississippi State. They have an excellent recruit at QB, Tommy is the starter. You have to believe he was told he was the starter, else he would have stayed at PSU or gone somewhere else.

I'm going to respectfully disagree with the comment that he was told he was the starter. Doesn't seem like that's how Cael rolls, jmo.

I agree, and seriously doubt Cael 'guarantees' a 1 year transfer the starting spot before tossing it around on the mat; that is short of Beard asking to redshirt outright. One would assume Beard is itching to get out there.

The coaches have a saying, 'you can't be a national champion if you can't beat the guys in the room'.

I think Cael let's them wrestle and if it is 'close' Conel may get the nod regardless. If Beard handles him easily then I think we go with Beard. I am open to the possibility of the wrestleoff not happening until December either.

Here's an interview Beard gave back in March, SIAP. In the interview when asked about redshirting, Michael said he planned on starting.

https://true-wrestling.com/2019/03/weighing-in-with-michael-beard-again/

If you listen he also said there is no plan, they are playing it by ear. He also said that this would be a redshirt year, before saying he planned on starting. Not exactly definitive. As always, fans want a decision now when in fact that decision won't be made until sometime during the season, maybe as late as sometime in January or early February.

Yes I agree it wasn't definitive Nova. Wasn't trying to be misleading, just wanted to share the interview with the board, and found that one comment interesting.

Ja, I didn't think you were trying to be misleading. I just like to point out every now and a again that things are not carved out of stone. If you were to get an honest answer from the coaches about who is going to start at 197 this season IMHO the answer would be "We just don't know at this point in time". Heck, in early January a few years back Hall was redshirting and then he didn't and won a national title.

The ONLY reason to take a grayshirt is to preserve the redshirt.

The notion of Beard possibly leaving because he might redshirt this year, is classic Penn State Pessimis.
Point taken didn't really think of it like that thanks I really don't want to be pessimistic but so.e wrestlers you just like and I like beard. I think he is going to be a freaking beast

Let me make this as clear as possible from someone who has coached him since he was 8yrs old. Michael is not leaving PSU and loves it there.
Good. I worry too much lol. I really believe he will be one of the All time greats at PSU. We Are.

Awesome (albeit expected) news, very excited for Connell and hope he is healthy and ready to go. Getting to train in the Penn state room is nothing like Kent state I'm sure and the practice partners and coaches could help him jump levels. If he is healthy and looking as good as he was at ncaas in 2018 I think they should shirt beard and get the one year out of kyle. Cant imagine any iowa fans will be excited with this news

Iowa fans think Warnerov will beat either of them, lol

I like to think that too. Thought we would see a big jump from Keener a few years ago, that big jump never materialized. At least in Conel's case, he has placed 3rd at NCAA's.

Not an unreasonable opinion since Warner is a returning AA, Conel has injury questions and Beard hasn't wrestled a NCAA season yet. Of course, I disagree with them. But there are much much crazier opinions on HR to make fun of.
Great point.
Of course even after one of the two cats beats Warner two or three times and finishes higher at Bigs and nationals it will be only because the PSU cat scored all of the offensive points and stalled.

Of course, Iowa guys are always #1 (until they're not)

Conel seems to have a much higher ceiling than keener based on some of what we have seen. Even if he doesnt jump levels, getting to the same spot he's already been at would be good enough realistically to lock the title down I would think

PSU, once again, has the absolute best back half of a lineup with Joseph, Hall, Rasheed, Conel, and Cassar. All will battle for titles in 2020. And some good ones waiting in the wings in JLee/Manville, Starocci, Brooks, Beard, and SNevills for next year!
