Congrats to PSU field hockey team

defeated number 1 Maryland to win Conference Tourney.

Impressive. The regular season matchup was 5-4 Maryland at Jeffreys. Two evenly matched teams. Could Field Hockey be this years surprise National Champion?

That is impressive. PSU has had really close matches against MD in FH since MD joined the B1G, but until today PSU had not had a win against MD in a B1G FH match.

PSU won the match 2-1. Apparently MD even pulled their goalie at the end of the match, but despite the extra attacker, the Nittany Lions were able to hold on.

Penn State will play Princeton in the 1st round of the championship next Saturday at 11:30AM.

Entire bracket is below.

Not only will they play, more importantly, they will host. The PSU/Princeton winner gets the Michigan/Virginia winner on Sunday for a berth in the Final Four. The good news is that not only are we hosting but we've already beaten all three of the other teams this year (including Michigan twice).

Yeah, it's a fussball board. but I stayed up til 4am watching them (#2 seed) beat Umd (#1 in B10) 2-1 to earn the B1G Champiuonship and put them into a home game in the ncaa tourney - at PSU - vs princeton (they beat them 4-2 earlier this season)... so i'm posting!

Really exceptional job AND the 500th career win for their long-time (goes without saying, I guess) coach, Charlene Morrett-Curtis (30th year). Congrats! Oh, and women's X-C finished a close second to um (let's not talk about how the men did :(

Now just don't tell my wife I spent 2 hours watching college girls in skirts bending over to whack at a ball... as Clubber put so delicately... dead meat. And if/when she catches me...

lol... well...sorta

A member of this board's grand-daughter scored 2 goals for our local high-school to win their division and is headed to the state play-offs tomorrow! Her 2nd goal was the game winner in overtime! Since he is a shy man, I will brag about her for him.:)

Just realized ro had posted on this yesterrday while i was mia... nice to see so many responses in the thread.

BTW, not sure any of the women i watched looked like this...

Here's hoping Jean gets her 3rd state title. Can't let Crestwood and Wyoming Seminary have all the fun! ;)

Going on right now! My kid is pissed that it had to be the same night as her first travel hockey practice. But, she is excited to see me play goalie for the first time in 30 years for a soccer team. I can't wait to laugh at you Daddy were her words.

Had some time on my hands, so I did this analysis of the rosters of the teams in the NCAA tournament.

Here’s a dozen surprising facts:
  1. There are 322 athletes on the rosters of the 18 teams. Almost exactly ¼ of them (105) are from PA.
  2. There are over twice as many PA kids as there are from any other state. NJ is second with 51.
  3. Every team in the tournament has at least two PA kids. Not surprisingly, PSU has the most 15.
  4. No other state has a kid on every team. New Jersey is closest with at least one kid on 16 teams.
  5. Only four programs have more kids from a state than they have kids from PA. In each case, the state is their home state. Maryland has 11 homegrown kids with just 3 from PA. Monmouth has 7 Jersey kids, 4 PA. Princeton has 6 NJ players, 5 PA. UNC has 7 Carolinians, 6 PA kids.
  6. Almost ¼ of the kids (99) are foreigners. PA is the only state more represented than foreign players.
  7. Penn State has fewer foreign players (2) than any other program.
  8. Duke has the most foreign players with 8. Three teams (Louisville, Monmouth, and UMass) have 7.
  9. There are more kids from the Netherlands (32) playing in the tournament than there are from any state other than NJ or PA.
  10. Netherlands has a player on 14 of the 18 teams in the tournament. Only American, Kent State, Stanford, and Princeton don’t have a Dutch player. Only PA and NJ have a higher representation of players with a presence on 18 and 16 teams respectively.
  11. There are 110 players on the rosters of the four #1 seeds. 32 of them (almost 30%) are from PA.
  12. The second highest representation on the top seeds is the Netherlands with 18. New Jersey is third with 15.

It’s obvious why Char took the kids to the Netherlands for their foreign tour.

On a side note, the ACC is generally considered the best field hockey conference. They have six teams in the tournament (the Big Ten has three). Here’s the breakdown of the 11 players named to the ACC All-Tournament team – five kids from PA, four kids from Europe, one from NJ, one from VA. If Char could just somehow start landing those top PA kids we could start a run like Cael’s boys have (of course, Cael does have the advantage that the Big Ten is easily the best wrestling conference, just like the ACC is the best field hockey conference).

Maryland's admission to the B10 (from the ACC) certainly improved the conference's field hockey profile and slightly reduced the ACC's.

Unfortunately, PSU got upset, at home, in the opening round of NCAAs, 2-1 by Princeton. CLICK HERE for an article about the match. PSU was ranked #4 in their NCAA bracket, while Princeton was ranked #14. And just like that, their season comes to an abrupt end.
