FB Recruiting Conrad Hussey makes surprise visit to Florida State

The whole landscape is a cesspool at the moment.

What used to happen under the table is now wide open.

"Student Athletes" are picking colleges based on primarily pro prospects/ coaches and NIL cash.

Academics? Majors? Life after football? No concern (but was it ever REALLY? )

Players are committed until they aren't, and then can decommit at any time over 4 or 5 or 6 or ? years. Coaches used to be the only ones with this privilege, so turnabout is fair play.

Dabo "earns" more in one year than all of the Governors from states that were aligned with the Confederacy combined.....the priorities of "the system" are clear: make money/ don't get sued. Capitalism at its unrestrained best....but the lacquer that has been shiny on the tabletop is now fading, and you can see the cheap pressboard and gum stuck underneath.

The wheels have been falling off the wagon for a long time- but the speed over the last 3 few years is astounding. Maybe the new NCAA Prez can get things back into some sort of balance?

I wouldn't bet on it. I used to LOVE "commitment day".....now it has lost its lustre. Soon the whole sport will too....

Sure. What's your point?
No point other than "what's good for the goose is what's good for the gander", or something like that.

Hard to criticize kids that have verbal-ed that are recruited away, when we still actively recruit kids that have verbal-ed elsewhere. Franklin doesn't want verbals to visit elsewhere, yet he still recruits kids that have verbal-ed elsewhere.

The whole thing stinks. We are no different from other schools. Maybe, just less obvious. What are young men learning about giving their word? That to lecherous men it means nothing to induce them to go back on it. Then to thank the former school for showing them all the love that they are spurning. The idea of honor has become an abstraction in our culture.

That is what happens when lecherous fans only care about winning. #firefranklin?

its been an evolution.

No doubt that universities exploited kids over the years. This is why I love JoPa so much. But there are plenty of stories of players not being able to read or write yet graduating from college. Joe singled out Switzer and Majors, specifically, yet there are dozens of others. If you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin".

Even at PSU, the university gets millions ($70m plus) each year and doles it out elsewhere. Again, PSU, Stanford and NW are probably the best examples of taking care of kids.

So kids pushed back and the courts found for them. So now the kids get money for NIL and not the schools. Now they make money. The problem is since there is no player organization, it is free for all. The colleges can't pay them lest they become employees and are covered by a ton of labor relations laws. At the same time, since they are not employees, they have no organization to bargain collectively with. Today the NFL has more player leverage than colleges.

Even these LOI days are useless. There is nothing to stop a player, having signed a LOI, for changing schools. Any of these kids could easily be playing for someone else by next fall.

Its a free for all.

I’m not arguing or agreeing with anything you said except for your last sentence. It’s not “a free for all”. It’s “a free for some and pay for others all”.

I think you're missing the point.

JF does not say, "Don't talk to other schools."
He says, "Don't commit to PSU unless you're sure. If you commit and then take other visits, that means you aren't sure and that means we can't reserve a spot for you."

There is no issue with any football coach talking to a recruit that is looking.
There is nothing wrong with a football coach setting expectations with a recruit about what a commitment means, and the ramifications of certain actions. It's all completely open and above board.

So no official decom post? Lol
Kid is an attention whore and will announce this evening. Needs to put a hat on his head so he can feel good about himself. Then next year when the attention dries up he will portal so he can make another announcement. If I am JFF I am not even letting Penn State be on the table. I am leaking to the twitter world that Hussey's offer has been pulled.

Get your point, but for all we know Hussey may have called Franklin last night to confirm his commitment to PSU, and just wants to create some public drama. Lots of players commit to the staff before they commit publicly, and I seem to remember others that committed to the staff and then announced public with fanfare on signing day.

No use beating the kid up more than he may or may not deserve....

understood, but I am going to go on gut feeling here and call the kid a disrespectful attention whore.

I think you miss my point. (and I am not anti Franklin), he puts stipulations on PSU verbals, yet he still recruits other teams verbals, kind of hypocritical IMO. I have no problem with the "don't commit unless you are sure" thing, and I have no problem with telling a recruit that "if you are still looking, we are still looking", that's actually smart, however, in all honesty, he is no better or worse than any other power 5 coach when it comes to this issue. And my real issue is people criticizing young 17/18 year olds for changing their minds.

You could be right. But I felt the same way about Micah Parsons during his recruitment. But now I’m glad he broke for us.
Bingo, its always great when a recruit switches for us, but they are attention whores when they go the other way.

Understand the disappointment but revoking a scholarship accomplishes nothing from the PSU perspective. Why wade into the muck? Just be silent and go about your business. The kid will have his five minutes of attention and then the reality will hit. Playing the victim and acting out with a revocation does not create the look PSU wants to have.

The player has freedom of choice until he signs. It's the reality. Who on here has not shopped for a job, expressed interest, then took a perceived better opportunity elsewhere? Unless a contract is signed, in the business world we never assumed a hire was ours until she/he showed up the first day.

For me...the juice has to be worth the squeeze. Im not going to stand by and let some low four star drag me around flaunting their visits.

I will for a once in a lifetime player.

PS....it is obvious that Micah is also a HUGE attention whore.

I totally understand what you are saying. I just don't live in that world.

Exactly. Revoking the scholarship is a disaster and extremely poor pr that other schools will use against is in negative recruiting efforts.

The CBs have been placed on Conrad Hussey to flip to Florida State and I don't remember seeing any in-home visit pictures of Franklin and Hussey. If true, then it makes me believe that Franklin could have pulled his offer a week or two ago.

Have to remember these are 17 and 18 year old kids. I don't want to be remembered for all the attention getting decisions I made in my youth.. Let him have his 15 minutes of fame.

Difference of opinion I guess. He can have all the attention he wants, just not at the expense of someone else. Its kind of like making a big play and showing up your opponent rather then celebrating your accomplishments with your own teammates. With social media the way it is having 15 hats on the table doesn't make a difference. All know he is picking up the Florida State one.

I guess it probably depends upon the circumstances. If it was a month ago, I probably wouldn't have a problem with him looking around. We might still have an opportunity to sign a kid at his position.

In this instance, the kid doesn't seem to know what he wants to do and it's signing day.

Love that Birchmeier, Williams on the OL, Robinson and Rojas at LB, and Washington at CB are enrolling in January.

Each of these 5 have a great chance to play in 2023, especially on the OL at Guard if there are any losses or injuries on the interior OL. And depth at LB, and there seems to be an opening at CB as a backup especially if Franklin and Smith don't get one in the portal.

Just read online that Conrad Hussey is NOT signing with any team today. That’s good news for Penn State, but Florida State and Miami are right in the thick of things with us. Gives us more time to keep Hussey in the fold.

Is he worth the drama?
Who knows.

That's the nature of recruiting. Some work out. Some don't. But the more 4 star athletes on the roster the better chance of having better players developed and playing.

Comparing any high school player that hasn't even practiced on the team to a particular star or flop is not realistic in the vast majority of cases ........

With all due respect, your logic is faulty.
A kid who is committed is not shopping. I'm not in the market for a car, but every car dealer in town sends me mail offering theirs.
There is nothing wrong with talking to kids who wants to talk. If a kid was truly committed, he wouldn't be taking JFs calls.

...and again, JF has never told a kid not to talk to another school. He HAS told them not to commit unless they're sure.
There is nothing hypocritical about recruiting a kid that is open to being recruited.

During the signing day special yesterday, Franklin said he missed his assigned time spot because he was talking to a recruit. This was right after he was congratulated for getting Hussey and two others. He said he could not comment on one of the players. Reading between the lines, he was talking to Hussey. Franklin did not seem upset, but who knows?
