We may have already used up our quota of good luck this season. Or, maybe we are just one helluva team on the rise.....
Most amazingly, this year despite injuries piling up on both O and D, we keep coming on. The D has found itself and is growing. STs are making some Big Plays. And now the D is facing its greatest challenge. There is a certain magic wand being waved in Happy valley these days, as we patch up, mix and match, pull rabbits out of hats, coach like hell, hustle, trust and believe.
This is already a team of Destiny and we should count our blessings. Penn State stock has risen so far beyond what could reasonably be expected earlier in the year - and the experts are furiously scratching their heads trying to figure out why. What is it that makes this team keep winning? There will be plenty of explanations, but maybe the best explanation is...there isn't one single explanation. Its a confluence of good fortunes, and the residue of hard work and good coaching. Plus maybe some well-earned, overdue, good fortune.
We've seen how so many teams become entitled; they are expected to win because on paper they are better than their opponent. Then an opponent rises up to knock them off that lofty perch of high expectations.
This group seems almost impervious to overconfidence, doesn't it....?. At least so far. All I want for Christmas is a team that manages to hold on the rest of the way, patches and all, blown redshirts as necessary, and creates perhaps the greatest turnaround in Penn State history.
It seemed possible that this season would be one where the team gains experience, learns how to win, and becomes a pretty good team by years end. That was my hope. An optimists 10-2 included a W over Pitt. Yet somehow we staggered past that painful loss, regrouped, and started to put together a Season for the Ages.
