Poor Barkley can't even get the homer vote, because our homer is an Ohio State Grad, who generally has a bias against PSU. So maybe Barkley really deserved to 4th, but he should at least get the homer vote! Notre Dame guys vote for Notre Dame Guys! West coast guys vote for USC guys! You would think we could get at least the hover vote here! Why Pennlive continues to have him as a PSU writer is beyond me. Worst PSU reporter I have ever seen!

Does Penn State have the ability to ban him from the pressers, practices etc... I would not put it past him to convey certain information to opposing programs. He seems to create conflict all the time . Is it to much to ask to have a person like him to be Pro Penn State? It's my belief that Franklin is not a fan and I don't like him because it's always about Dave Jones a piece of...

who cares. as a human being, this clown couldn't carry barkley's jock.

Used to work
Used to work for the Patriot News in a prior life, Nick Horvath was the sports editor (Oklahoma fan). Most boring newspaper in Pennsylvania but a good employer. The York Newspaper had a guy named Ziants(?) or was it Zits, who seemed to actually dislike Penn State. Some of these guys are neutral but don't want to look like homers. Some think they are intellectuals and will parse their words, like, for example what is the "best" player. The most talented, the best performer or he who gets best statistics. I also worked for the Lancaster papers and that editor told me he didn't care about Penn State one way or the other but he hated covering them so he kept assigning different staff writers to their games.
Most of their problem is that they know they are in Penn State territory and that is what sells but they deem themselves "journalists" and don't want to lower themselves to being mere "homers."

Just wondering if other papers throughout the country have a writer who is so clearly against the local/home team. Can't ever remember seeing one in Philly, Lebanon, Allentown, State College, or south Florida.

Can't stop a guy from working based on his own interests, but Jones does seem like a rarity from my limited viewpoint.

I always wonder what kind of miserable SOB it takes to be a beat writer for such a long period for a program you obviously hate. I would loathe getting up in the morning to do that job. That being said, our running game gave Davey an easy out on that one. Like it or not, Barkley didn't have the numbers.

I believe I was Horvath who covered the Mt Carmel - Mc Devitt game In Shamokin back in ‘96

All week long all he did was diss MCA.
But then he had to walk out of the press box and down thru all the MCA fans after the game — wasn’t pretty

Bob Flounders, Greg Pickel and Dustin Hockensmith, PSU beat writers for PennLive & the Harrisburg Patriot-News also believed that Saquon did not deserve the Heisman- BASED UPON the numbers. They all agreed that he was the best player in college football; HOWEVER, they also know that the Heisman Trophy is about numbers- numbers that Saquon did not have (through no fault of his own, something they also acknowledged). David Jones is not the Antichrist. The voting for the Heisman has become (always has been?) about numbers and in that regard Saquon was not going to win. Do I think that he should have been invited to NYC? Yes, absolutely. Am I disappointed that due to issues with the offensive line that he lost what looked like a firm hold on the trophy? Yes, absolutely. I don't want writers voting for the hometown player- vote for the player that you think deserves the award. David was doing what every writer is now doing, unfortunately, and that is voting based on numbers. He certainly could have voted for Barkley based on what he saw outside of the numbers, but in 2017 that is not what happens with regard to the Heisman. It will all be reversed in Dallas at the end of April 2018.

jones is a good writer that has the "anti" thing going. He was on local radio, CLE, stating that Jm Tressel was in the mafia because he was from youngstown...and he wasn't joking.

I've never understood the self-loathing at PSU. Why do local writers feel hammering PSU players is good for them? In CLE, the writers are all on board tOSU. You can almost never find a negative comment, at all. They support all of the players and make excuses for them all the time.

Back to Jones, his rational is really nuts. I get voting for a QB, since he is so important to the team. But anyone voting Love over Barkely is nuts and knows nothing about football. Love has better stats because he played behind a much better line in a much more run oriented offense. Barkely ended up being the decoy most of the second half of the season, while PSU continued to pile up tons of points. So a guy like Jones is suggesting this is a team honor, and not an individual honor. When did that change?

I can show you 15 Barkley highlights that are better than Love's best highlight (and Love is a damn good RB).

NFL will make it right when he's the #1 RB taken in the draft and probably in the top five. Almost all NFL prognosticators are calling him the most impactful player in the draft.

I've lived in a couple of other states and none of their beat writers are anti-home team.

Was it all about the numbers in 2002 when Larry Johnson was denied the Heisman?

Lamar Jackson had 3500 yards passing along with 1400 yards rushing. He accounted for 42 TDs only had 6 Ints and had 9 100+ rushing games.

My point is that it's more than "just about the numbers".

I guess it comes down to that famous "eye test" that gets quoted on these boards. And I think it comes down to a "feeling" among voters. There is no genuine criteria.

What virtually EVERY voter totally ignored:

- Love had 6 catches for 33 yds.
- Barkley had 47 catches for 594 yds.

What virtually EVERY voter based his vote on:

- Seeing Barkley getting stuffed for losses time after time because of Moorhead’s offensive subbornness.

Then Jones and others should have enough self respect to give up their vote. If he CAN'T vote for who he believes is the most outstanding player in CFB but rather MUST vote based on some unknown numerical formula, then be a man and say I'm not gonna be a part of this farce and tell them to stuff their vote. I won't hold my breath waiting for Jones or any other writer to take such a principled stand.

The hatred, bias, and animosity that David Jones has against Penn State is only exceeded by the hatred, bias, and animosity that many board posters have against David Jones himself - lol.

I wonder how well he would be received by players from whom he seeks comment?

I, for one, was not at all surprised.
Again, what is the standard that is to be used to give or deny the award to anyone. I don't think it is actually fair to compare quarterbacks and running backs. I also want lineman 2 be included. And if the actual wording of the Heisman, those parts regarding sportsmanship, are to be included and how can you give it to Mayfield

I would agree on this.. It was Davey boy who made all the noise with the "Just like beating Akron" comment, as well as the timeout for the field goal ice vs Georgia State.

Franklin:
"I know last year for their win was like winning the super bowl, but for us this is just like beating akron."

Jones:
"... Ah James, sounding confused, "I was totally going to ask something completely different, don't know people in Pittsburgh will, probably not take that they way that you meant it..."

Franklin:
"Each. win. stands. alone. This win is no more significant for us than beating Akron, I've been saying this for three years now, each win stands alone."

All over ESPN, Big Ten Network...

"Franklin says beating Pitt is similar to victory over Akron."

That right there is what's wrong with the wretched media... They do that CONSTANTLY... not just in sports, but all of it... It's why our country a mess. Nothing is news worthy anymore, because they make everything newsworthy, picking at things that aren't even there and don't matter.

True story. When i worked in Lancaster for a newspaper, the sports editor told a few of us he had a vote for the All America team and asked who we should pick. We gave him our input and he voted about 3/4 of the people we suggested. This was in the early '70s. All of us were homers albeit for different teams.

Well, I contend these things are statistic driven. In other words, these people cannot see all the games and are too lazy to do the research. As such, they look at a stat sheet and make their move. Of course, no input as to the other parts of the team's offense or defense. So it becomes a "team award".
