Depth Chart 9-4-2017

Surprising with the B1G Championship Game Blacknall had he is not a starter. Seems Thompkins would also be good at the same spot Hamilton is at to free up Blacknall.

Miranda didn't play on Saturday so it would seem that they want to redshirt him. But how is that possible? Do they hope/expect Gonzales to play every snap st LG?

Blacknall saw 30 plays last week.
Thompkins and Blacknall from 2016
440 yds 1 td 16,3 ypc = 347 yds 3 tds 23.1 ypc
Both have skills... they will both play a lot. Not sure what starter means with this group of receivers and offense.

It should be noted that our receivers dropped four passes vs Akron, but none of those drops came from Blacknall. Of course, Blacknall was not targeted and played sparingly. One of Blacknall's best features are his sure hands: He is one of our best pass catchers, especially in traffic. Obviously I think he will play more and more as the season goes along.

The
Mahon, Gesicki, & Hamilton are the only offensive starters with senior eligibility. Of course Barkley will probably leave early.

Menet replaces Mahon
Sanders replaces Barkley
Holland or Bowers replace Gesicki
Polk could replace Hamilton

Gesicki will probably be the most difficult to replace. This should still be a very talented offense.

I suspect Miranda will play eventually. However, between Menet, Simpson, Shuman, and Kelly we have plenty of Guard Depth without having to pull his shirt.

His shirt doesn't get pulled until Guns says it gets pulled.....(and then it still doesn't get pulled)!

Why are you talking about next year? Try enjoying 2017.

Where's Matos?
More game playing with Narduzzi. Just like Barkley running back kicks and the dual-QB formations, Franklin is playing cat - mouse with Narduzzi. I bet Matos is really our second string DE and will play a lot.

Don't forget about Danny Daulton, as well at the 2 stud '18 TE's coming in. Going to continue to be a huge strength for years.

Not ahead of Bowen, I agree. As for Farmer, I'd love to see him improve as well, but I would not be surprised to see him overtaken by Brown.

Snap counts from Akron game.

Jason Cabinda — 31 of 63

Koa Farmer — 26 of 63

Cam Brown — 25 of 63

Manny Bowen — 24 of 63

Don't forget the two freshmen tight ends in this recruiting class

The posted depth chart does not always indicate game time substitution patterns, and can change.

That said, two main observations:
  • The starting defense has a lot of experience -- 7 seniors plus 2 others Torrence Brown and Bowen who have played a lot; Koa Farmer with some game experience, and Shareef Miller is the only sophomore or younger; the starting secondary are all seniors
  • Miles Sanders is behind both Mark Allen and Andre Robinson, as well as Barkley at RB; he is listed first as Kick Returner; I'd like to see Miles get game action and make progress if he is to be the primary ball carrier, or a primary ball carrier next year

I don't expect a young inexperienced TE to be in Gesicki's class. Remember how Gesicki couldn't catch anything 2 years ago?

Hopefully we'll offset his loss by having a dominant OL.

Sanders is 2nd team RB with Allen and Robinson. Notice the "OR" on the depth chart.

Agree that I would like to see Sanders get more carries. I'd also like to see the young TE's get a lot of game action.

My bad; I do see the second "OR" on the depth chart at Running Back.

My preference (mostly based on his speed) is for Sanders to emerge at Running Back, but Allen and Robinson are good, too. Should be interesting to observe the rotation as the season goes on.
