Depth chart is out.

Clifford over Zembiec for #3. And it's not even listed as "or" either. Interesting

I don't see Ellis Brooks listed anywhere?
Brooks looks destined for a redshirt unless we have a 2016-esque run of injuries at linebacker. It's probably for the better, too, if Cooper is healthy again.

A few other things jump out: it looks like Clifford has beaten Zembiec, which is really encouraging for SC and pretty discouraging for JZ. The OL looks as we expected it to look based on what the reporters have been observing during camp, but Miranda looks good to go, and it's nice to see Shuman and Gellerstedt make their way onto the depth chart. WR and RB look as expected, and Thompkins has beaten Blacknall there.

A little surprised to see Castagna over Simmons at DE and Castro-Fields over Wade at CB, but these depth charts come with the caveat that we won't know the *real* depth chart until we see how many snaps these guys are playing - I think Wade could very well see more snaps than TCF because of his work at nickel, for example.

Overall, not too many surprises based on what we've seen and heard this summer, but we seem to be primed, deep, and ready to roll.

TCF #2 and Wade #3 backing up Haley. That may have something to do with T.J. transfer.
Miranda must be too good to RS and maybe Thorpe as well.
My boy, Zach Simpson, #2 at center !

A couple notable position battles:

Apke gets the starting nod over Monroe at strong safety
Thompkins ahead of Blacknall at Z receiver

Per Franklin, true freshmen Gross-Matos, Wade and Castro-Fields will all play Saturday. They are a go. All other freshmen listed in "yellow" category, meaning they would like to redshirt, if possible.

Surprised Garrett Taylor is still 3rd string. Wasn't he a top 100 guy with good offers coming out of HS? I remember he blew out his knee, but I thought he would be getting more PT by his 3rd year in the program

But Gross Matos does not appear on the 3 deep. Stealth DE ?
Also have to wonder about Miranda. He looks green on the DC.

Dan Pasquariello is the #2 punter. Isn't he 38 years old? How long has he been in the program?

I'm afraid the Sterling Jenkins project is not working. He's 3rd behind Bates, and also redshirt freshman Will Fries.

I will say there appears to be plenty of OL talent on 2nd and even 3rd string.

lists Gesicki as a Sr/Sr. I thought he had another year?

I recall CJF talking about RS. I think he was saying that Clifford may be third string but if McS and Stevens are out, he might play Ziembec because he wants to RS Clifford. Point being that Z is probably our true third stringer this season as blowing Clifford's RS is a last resort. He didn't use the names, but that was his meaning.

I suspect Gross Matos will be on special teams. Davis said in an interview that Castro Fields and Wade are great on special teams. This is Franklin's pattern. Start True Frosh on special teams and then transition them into their natural positions. I suspect he is not a fan of playing starters on special teams, but haven't heard him say that.

No this is his final year, and we should all be thankful for that because a lot of people thought he would declare after the Rose Bowl last season like Godwin. Really excited to be able to see his talent in Beaver Stadium again this season, kid is special.

A few people thought he might declare after the Rose Bowl, but certainly not a lot of people.

He went from a disappointment to perhaps the biggest surprise in one year.

If they aren't on the depth chart, they are on the scout team.

Miranda may be listed 2nd string because he's earned it, but I'll bet he doesn't play unless injuries really hit. They'd probably play Menet at either left or right guard if they need to replace a starter, or maybe play Fries at guard, maybe Wright if Nelson comes on as the season goes on. I'm sure they would like to preserve Miranda's redshirt.

I've always liked him as a player. I know it is blasphemy, but would we better moving McGovern back to guard, and playing him at center?
I guess we will see how well Mahon plays, big fan of him as well.

Maybe Blacknall's doghouse issue prevented an "or" with Tompkins...

Nice set up for Menet. Get some snaps this year behind Mahon, then win the same position for 2018....

Castro-Fields must be the next Mel Blount to overtake Wade in such short order, given Wades head start.... can't wait to see them both!

Why would CJF waste a year if his eligibility with the depth PSU has at LB? I doubt he is the first true freshman that would play anyway, as we are 3 deep at MLB......
Depth at linebacker? By depth, do you mean they are alive with beating hearts? We have different definitions of depth. One or two injuries and we're back in the same boat as last year at LB, imo. I believe LB depth is still our biggest concern, by far.

I think Wade is the nickel. He'll see 50% of the snaps.

I'm surprised no Jan Johnson on the LB depth chart. He looked pretty good up until getting hurt last year. He is list as 2nd team Long Snapper so he's got that going for him.

A true freshman could be a couple injuries away from starting. I like how you guys act like a couple injuries is an anomaly. This is not chess. There are ALWAYS injuries.

Take a look at last year's depth chart. This year's depth chart is all players that were here last year minus Bell and Wartman. That added depth is the true freshman.

Will Linebacker
5 Nyeem Wartman-White(6-1, 240, Gr./Sr.) 11 Brandon Bell (6-1, 233, Sr./Sr.) 33 Jake Cooper (6-1, 230, So./So.) 20 Johnathan Thomas (5-11, 220, Jr./So.)
Middle Linebacker
40 Jason Cabinda (6-1, 232, Jr./Jr.) 5 Nyeem Wartman-White(6-1, 240, Gr./Sr.) 47 Brandon Smith (6-0, 228, Sr./Jr.)
Sam Linebacker
11 Brandon Bell (6-1, 233, Sr./Sr.) 43 Manny Bowen (6-1, 220, So./So.) 25 Von Walker (5-11, 213,

Have also seen some coaches comment about how they like Menet's versatility, his ability to play at various positions. A very valuable utility player even if he does not start.

I'm always surprised that Bates is the shortest of all listed tackles (RT and LT) but has excelled at LT to the point of starting there. Kid's got great hands, feet, etc. and I guess there's the proof.

He is not wasting a year if the player is playing and contributing. Did he waste a year with Barkley? Is he wasting a year with Wade, TCF and Matos?

Between early entry to the NFL, injuries, transfers, grades, and discipline MOST players never see that 5th year.

3 deep at MLB? If Cabinda gets hurt the depth chart goes to chit. Smith is not built to last a full season.
