Did PSU ever figure out why other teams knew the plays?

Yes, it was the offensive linemen and tight ends and how they were leaning and which hand they would put down to the ground.

I remember when they used to say Tunch Ilkin had a “tell“ on passing plays, yet opposing defensive ends couldn’t do squat about it.

Did the staff ever figure out what PSU was doing to telegraph the plays?
I heard that some player's mother was dating a guy named Jerry Rogers, formerly an unethical high school quarterback who would date the sister of a player just to get a peek at his playbook. Rogers now sells playbooks on the dark web. PSU's is one of his better sellers.

Because our O playbook, playcalling and schemes are all at an elementary school level? (And with sincere apologies to the 90% of elementary school coaches that exceed PSU’s level!)

Just kidding... 😁

What the 'Nova player said wasn't entirely true, as the OL run blocks on RPOs. The OL can't tip run or pass on RPOs, since they don't even know. But, that being said, it was Walker's stance that they likely picked up from the sky cam view.

That's the primary reason Mike Yurich was hired. He came to learn how to coach football. What better place to learn than right here with the help of the NNNNNCAC?

I can't imagine a scouting report at virtually any level of football that doesn't attempt to identify tendencies or keys that appear to "tip" plays.
Certainly stance is perhaps the most elementary. Others could be line splits, how far guards or tackles line up off the ball (to facilitate pulling), formations, personnel packages, depth of running backs, sequence of play calling, field position etc.

Correct. All teams do it.

How much easier would an HD sky cam vid of your opponent make that scouting for you back in the day?:)

I remember some team saying they knew every play when paterno was the coach. BS then. BS now.
The difference then was that during some seasons, the other team could have been in Penn State’s huddle and still not have been able to stop the play. Not all the time, but some seasons the execution was so good it did not matter.

Now, take a look at some of the plays during the Illinois game this past year as an example - what appears to be simple blocking assignments were missed over and over again, including at critical times that had they been picked up would have won that disaster.

IMO Penn State has recently been fighting both poor execution AND poor scheme.

Generally, we were prohibited from filming as a scouting method period. Often all we had were a pile of papers with plays diagrammed and defensive alignment. But endzone cameras are pretty common as well as ipads on the sidelines in high schools around here.
Probably would have hurt me more than helped. I loved the power running game and we cheated a lot on splits and depth of our RBs on certain plays. Cavemen compared to today.

Yep, too bad non of our Olinemen the last few years could carry Tunch's equipment. Rest in peace Tunch....

Sounds like an episode of the Brady Bunch.

It does not matter what the play is if the offensive cannot block running plays or passing plays.
