It's for my son. He has an obsession with them. Don't ask me why but he does. He is 11 years old, and I have bought probably over 30 vacuums for him since he was 5 years old. Older, newer, it doesn't matter. But every day he drives me nuts about constantly getting him one. He loves putting them together, connecting the different hoses, etc...

So anyone with a second hand one, please let me know. I live in the Wilkes-Barre, Scranton area. I will come pick them up. Thank You.

Haha... I have about 12 vacuum cleaners... people say it is an obsession. I buy about one a year.

Unfortunately I'm in Jacksonville FL and NYC.

Good to see I'm not alone!

Try Good Will Store.

Have there been others? Nothing really comes to mind.

1. Awesome post. This thread could become epic..
2. Not sure if serious, but I don't really care.
3. Does he like to be alone with his vaccuums? (If so, he's a little advanced for his age, but at least you know what he'll be looking for in a girlfriend.)
4. I'm assuming he prefers canister vaccuums to uprights.
5. Please let us know if anyone takes you up on your offer.

I know this doesn't really need to be said, but you're a good parent. Kids that age should be encouraged to pursue whatever they're curious about. You never know what it will lead to. Maybe it's design, or marketing or engineering.

Do you have Maker Fairs in schools in the Scranton area? They've become all the rage in New Jersey middle schools. My brother organizes them. It's basically mixing technology arts and crafts. A lot of it is just taking apart old machines and appliances and seeing how they work. Kids love this stuff -- boys and girls. The idea is that high tech is all around us in all these machines -- it's not just computers and phones and video games.

The only thing comparable for our generation was the semester of shop (girls weren't allowed, of course) where we got to take apart a lawn mower and put it back together again.

I think it's about time you tell him he has to take them completely apart and then put them back together.
Or ask him: "How would you make these better?"

Oh boy, I understand. My son was into garbage trucks as a toddler, and then into vacuum cleaners (for mom and dad, that really is...concerning, because, you know, you envision your kid being more than just a clean-up man...). We have 3 Dysons (nice, but not my favorites), several Sharks (nice, not as sturdy as the Dysons, but good in their own way), and various and sundry other brands. Most of those were bought for him by his grandmother, who's a bit more of a "soft touch" than I am. My son has the weekly chore of vacuuming the floors but I usually help him out some. He's 13 now.
I wish I could help you with the vacuums but I live in the Atlanta area.
BTW, my son has graduated to yard equipment and fixed one of his lawnmowers this week (yeah, he's got a few of those, too...), I think he replaced the ignition coil. And he sharpens his own blades. He's got a nice little summer business mowing the neighbors' lawns. I'm quite proud of what he's accomplished!

Check area flea markets. You could probably get a killer score. For those of you have driven 22 back towards Pittsburgh there's a killer flea market by Blairsville right on the highway that gets all kinds of cool stuff during the Summer months. My thing right now is ashtrays.

Can he fix mine?

I had to sell my vacuum the other day as it was just collecting dust.

What has he done with the 30 that you've already purchased?

Did he have one of these?

My oldest son loved vacuum cleaners as well. As a baby, he was colicky. We tried everything but the thing that worked the best was me holding him and running the sweeper at the same time. I guess between being against my warm stomach and the vibration from the sweeper it always worked and got him to sleep despite the noise.

We ran it so often we got a maintenance agreement from Sears and took it in several times. Once the service person asked us, "Do you use this for industrial use?" Our carpets were always clean, lol. So that may of been the start of his fascination of vacuums.

When we'd be in hotels he would diligently watch the workers running their vacuums in the halls and he loved taking ours apart and putting it back together again, changing belts, etc. From the pictured model we moved up to a Dirt Devil kids one that actually did have some suction to it, figured may as well be useful.

So I can relate to your son's fascination with vacuums.

My sons 23 now but his fascination from ages five to twelve or so was taking apart computers. Computers outdated themselves soo quickly then that you could find them at yard sales for $10 or less. Also bought non working lawnmowers, weed whackers, whatever. I patiently cleaned up after him and got use to buying contractor garbage bags. You could say I paid for my sons college education pretty cheaply, he never went. He's a top notch mechanic, makes good money and has no loan payments
