Does Iran know how dangerous Iowa is???

Well, in fairness Foley's original quote was Iran safer than "Iowa" not "Iowa City" -- so the IC crack was goalpost shifting itself.

Maybe UWW couldnt provide adequate security for Iran while in Iowa???

That's a bummer... Do we know the US lineup yet?

Just catching up: someone should tell TR about the Iowa City Coop, it's the best grocery store I've ever been to (if you don't mind paying a LOT for wheatgrass juiced by Mike Evans and blended with Thomas Gilman's tears....)

Are the "Iowa is dangerous" comments real or satire?
I don't remember the exact quote, but in one of TR Foley's mailbag's, he said he thought Iowa City was more dangerous than Tehran. He's probably right--totalitarian regimes tend to be places with lower crime....

Even though the state of Iowa was allowing (for example) same-sex marriages in 2009, several years before Obergefell v. Hodges, Foley still hates them. If you are a white person who usually votes Republican, then you are clearly an uncultured snob, in his eyes. He doesn't let facts get in the way of his biases - which is exactly what he implicitly accuses the hicks of doing.

Nevermind that New York City's "culture" largely consists of stuff it co-opted from other places.

I don't think I have to tell you what the nation of Iran's policy is towards non-conformists. It isn't like Iowa's, that's for sure.

And, because he's a goober, he won't man up and back down from his original asinine statement and instead prides himself on his wine-and-cheese New York snobbery.

And then he expects us to take his wrestling "takes" seriously? No thanks. Clearly Foley is too self-important to let facts challenge his biases as regards social questions, so why wouldn't he do the same for other things?

I went to Iowa on a grad school visit. Caught a match at Carver while I was there.

Wasn't very welcoming for someone who looks like me (dark skin, family is from India). Heard quite a few "go back where you came from" comments when I had the nerve to applaud the other team's take-downs.

Also had one guy turn to a hick and say something like "If you don't shut up with the 1940's comments, i'll knock you into the 1940's" which my girlfriend and I appreciated. We bought him and his kid hot dogs.

All the businesses and restaurants didn't seem to have an issue with me or my money. But carver felt like I was wearing a cowboys hat at an eagles game.

There are always a few who give the rest a bad name. All in all I had a pleasant experience in Iowa, but like any sporting event, a few bad apples tend to drown out the vast majority who are quality people.

Iowa is about as safe as it gets. Although we have had a crew of teenage boys steal running cars several times since it has been cold out. Shameful. What has this world come 2!

Foley should be denied NCAA championships media credentials for the foreseeable future ....

.... reason being Cleveland, Pittsburgh, St Louis, Detroit & Minneapolis are all located in flyover states, and I doubt Barolo wine is readily available.

Not agreeing with Foley in any form but..... murder rates:

Iran: 2.6/100,000
Iowa: 2.0/100,000
Pennsylvania 5.0/100,000

Perhaps crime is better documented in the US, or maybe we have more.

Just to defend those PA stats, how many are in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh and does Iowa have large cities like those two. I know the total pop of Iowa is 3.1 mil and PA 12.8, while the stat is per 100,000 how many are from larger cities.
Did a quick check and according to google Des Moines is the largest at about 200,000, Philly has 1.5 mil. I do know this really simplifies the stats.

It depends on what you consider "crime". As someone else said, authoritarian regimes have less "crime", because the cost is so high. In Saudi Arabia where they cut off your hand when you steal--they have less theft! But, they don't count the crimes caused by the regimes. Iranian prisons are notorious for torture of many people who would never be sent to prison in the US--political and religious prisoners.

Didn't see NoVa's post when I posted this, but sounds like we see it the same.

Anyone see the Iran episode of Bourdain?

Those two in country Washington Post reporters were disappeared before the episode aired.

And you could see it coming, from at least one ambivalent answer those reporters gave him during their lunch.

Another reason is that he never visited Carver while living in Chicago.

Just can't comprehend how that is possible for a professional covering the sport.

Compared to his Che Guevara Motorcycle Diaries reprisal tour thru the Andes, Chicago to Iowa City is like falling out of bed.

Well, those political prisoners tortured and murdered by the government aren't reported by regimes like Iran.

Good points. I doubt many reporters go missing, unless they want to, in State College or Iowa City.

That's a pretty dick thing for Foley to tweet.

He says dicky things (to or about iowa mostly) but to me for being a world traveler and wrestling "media/personality " he comes off very distant from reality. Sometimes his answers are clueless to the point I think he is trolling his audience because his editors have to be ok with the idiocy......

Iowa City is a pretty safe place. I don't think many deaths occur from being blocked off and pushed. Keep your eyes wide open for a little dude in a green sweater because he may just "take you out" and he doesn't care how big you are.
It's all the vegans and literary types that scare me...

Good try! ... But that’s not a defense, is it? :)

A defense would be: those numbers are wrong; the correct numbers show we don’t suck in this safety contest vs Iowa. In contrast, what you did is more: here is the reason why we suck in this safety contest vs. Iowa. :)

Your line of reasoning might work as a defense only if you could prove that Philly, Pittsburg, etc. are not part of Pennsylvania. :)

No, I was not creating a defense at all, just that I assume (totally my assumption without stats to back it up) a majority of the crime happens in bigger cities and we have more bigger cities than some other states. So, stay out of those cities and you are generally safe.
And I am not trying to remove Philly and Pitt, who would we root for in NFL football then? Plus they have some great restaurants!!
